Latency Spikes and Spectrum ISP

As a volunteer, I generally do not review memory dumps or Wireshark logs. However, I took a look and there’s nothing super concerning. To troubleshoot further, you would need to capture those “unrecognized packet type” packets coming in and have ChatGPT or someone (not me) review them for issues.

Nothing bad or questionable happened in that test. All hops returned to normal after the nodes that ignored ping requests.

Over the past 7 or 8 years, I’ve seen some unique problems affecting connections:

  • Corrupt network card drivers, or ones that don’t work with a recent Windows update.
  • Power supply issues to the network interface.
  • A faulty AC outlet or power cable causing small blips.
  • Interference from other peripherals plugged in near the Ethernet port/cable.
  • Faulty port on the router.
