Jeff Kaplan on Emongg's & Fran's streams (Concluded) - Talk about Competitive Changes & More

Oof this kinda stings

Look at it from my point. I love to play Overwatch and I rarely complain about hero balance. Yeah, I have my opinions, but I know the game was fun to play yesterday, it is fun to play today, and I firmly believe it is going to be fun to play tomorrow. I know they are working on the game as best as they can, so to stress over hero balance is something not worth stressing over.

it really does when the screaming he is referring to is balance

O boy, there’s no progression in competitive… whatever it is they intend to do I’d be concerned. On the other hand, I’ve learned not to take developer statements very seriously after Heroes of the Storm and SC2. You could probably add this game too. They talk a big game but tend to deliver very little very late. It’s a good thing they at least made the games in the first place, because given their tendency to talk I’d be scared if they started talking before a game was made.

Exploiting in the game is against the rules and should bring permanent bans.

Erm, if I were to guess you’re working on your own irl progression with Blizzard. If you were active on Heroes of the Storm you’d be exactly the sort of person “rarely complaining” all the way until the ship has sunk. Obviously that’s not a virtue. Hero balance only defines how fun the game is, but I suppose in the bigger scheme of things that’s not worth stressing over.

Buff 76 and make him not gay…

As far as i’m concerned they should have looked at the character that literally created the goats meta (brigitte) instead of nerfing the tanks and then some.

They nerfed Brig directly Rally armor only lasts 30s) and nerfed armor which nerfs Brig indirectly more than any other hero.

manipulating the sr system is also bannable but smurfs don’t count despite doing just that

the actual tier list is more like silver, gold, bronze, plat, etc. on easiest to climb to hardest

I’m 100% sure because I want the original back and improved as it should of been. Tired of playing Mega Symmetra. I miss the old sym that was very fun and acceptable.

That is not the type of exploiting I’m referring to and I think you know that.

I’m just saying that if people truly believe, that the game is balanced purely to the top level of play, then there should be no question that they should be able to select the right heroes to be able to take advantage of the lower ranks. That’s not true exploitation; that’s playing the game how it’s supposed to be played.

Thank you for summing this up, Wyoming! Great work as always!

And whose fault is that?

You made a team game build from the ground up about on-the-fly hero and team-comp switching.

Then you marketed it with 100% emphasis on character and lore, and 0% on actual gameplay.

Do the math.

Actually that’s literally what they do.

way noticed

it’s a welcomed surprise

just elaborate on it and fix it please

good

???

lol

Wyoming you work for blizz right? you should do your own interview/q&a with Kaplan and some other devs and use questions forum users have

if that’s even possible idk how jobs work

As a reminder, I am not a representative of Blizzard Entertainment. I am only a Forum MVP (for Blizzard Tech Support), and even this post doesn’t count towards that role as there is no Community MVP program for Overwatch at this time.

If we look back on when goats became a thing, it wasn’t with the release of Brig, but with the shift into sniper meta. The entire reason it was formed was to not get one shot killed. Brig made that much easier with armor, but it was hardly just her that forced goats into creation. If they didn’t play goats, then the opposing team would just go Widow and Hanzo and delete every squishy in the game. Burst damage became too strong.

Disappointing. Completely out of touch with the average player’s concerns. Matchmaking is a joke and LFG is a dumb system. Stop putting my duo against 6 stacks. The most elaborately engineered matchmaking system can’t do the simple math of keeping group sizes even? Buuulllll.

So that tank post reply wasn’t true.

Hey Wyoming, pretty good summary. I already watched both but awesome of you to put this together for the wider community.

One fix in bold (and side note in bold parenthesis):

Also, you missed perhaps the most important point of Jeff’s talk with Emongg! (IMO):

  • Jeff thought that Emongg’s idea of role-specific MMR+SR in combination with role queue would be really cool… though others on the team are not necessarily on board with role queue

Maybe this is what you were trying to get at in the following, but pretty abstractly written…

As an aside, personally I thought it was cool of Jeff to voluntarily pop by and agree to a full hour of impromptu questioning. Also really appreciated hearing how he’s basically in “the trenches” so to speak with the rest of us… and is trying to nudge the team towards solutions the best he can.
