Lots of heroes have voice lines in their native language, including Genji.
Can Hanzo also have some Japanese voice lines? Now that Lucio got some lines in his language and Torb will get some Swedish lines in future (I think someone from blizzard confirmed this), it’d be only fair if our favorite Shimada brother had JP voice lines as well.
What if we got new “You are already dead” voice line for next Halloween event, and it said “Omae wa mou shindeiru”? Wouldn’t that be amazing?
The reason why Hanzo speaks English more often is because hes the head of the Shimada clan, that shows that his educated and that’s important when you have that kind of weight on your shoulders.
Everyone expects the best from you and none other than the best, theres a reason why most of Hanzo’s lines are about him being disciplined and arrogant.
While this is true, having Japanese voice lines won’t change much as they’re optional to use (I’m talking about lines that are equipped, not standard ones).
I believe that’s because the voice actors can’t speak their character’s language. However, if a voice actor is willing to learn they’ll change the voice. (Eg. Lucio)
The reason Hanzo doesn’t have Japanese voice lines is because the voice actor doesn’t speak Japanese, and it took a lot of time to just get the ult voice line done decently (apparently it’s still embarassing to native speakers how he sounds). But then again they have recently have non-native voice actors do voice lines in languages they don’t speak so I don’t know what they’re doing at Blizzard.
You know, I bet people who play Overwatch in other languages don’t fret over making sure their voice actor’s are the right representative or speak or have an accent in their language. And Sake is Japanese even if other countries use a similar word.
His VA doesn’t speak Japanese. If I recall, there was a process they had to go with to get his Ultimate voiceovers, there’s a word for it, but I can’t quite remember the name for it, to be honest. They basically had to walk him through how to say the phrases and practice explicitly that phrase, with the proper accent. And it’s still not up to par with a normal Japanese speaker. (Go ahead, ask them if you wanna brighten their day up)
But Johnny (Lucio’s VA) learned Portuguese quite well, I can see Hanzo’s learning it, too. Even if Japanese is a little bit harder, from my understanding of how most Asian dialects work.
Hell, even Reinhardt’s VA has a German line now, albeit, it’s a simply one that means “Cheers!”, usually in relation to drinking or eating. I’d love to hear Reinhardt screaming “Festhämmern!” instead of his normal English line. At least, I think that’d be the proper phrase. gTranslate only gets you so far .
I always figured that, from a lore standpoint, Hanzo doesn’t speak Japanese because it reminds him of the misdeeds he had done to his brother. Like, he doesn’t want to continue using the “Old” language so that he can put it behind him and move forward. Kind of like how Genji is at peace with his past life, and Sombra’s blackmail threats mean nothing to him now.
Literally don’t get how adding voice lines in their native languages would “change” the heroes. If someone is Japanese and grew up in Japan, it makes sense that they’d know Japanese.
And Hanzo’s va not knowing the language isn’t a valid reason for him not to have any Japanese voice lines, sorry not sorry. I’m American, but I’ve learned how to properly say phrases in Japanese through minor lessons; Hanzo’s va can do the same. He doesn’t need to learn the language in its entirety.
This is quite possibly one of the worst excuses I’ve seen. How does someone seem more intelligent by speaking English? Like, do you think he spoke to his family in English while he was living with them?
Hanzo’s lines are about discipline because of how he was raised. It has nothing to do with language.
This is ultimately up to the voice actor in this regard. They did tell him how to say the ult line but even then it’s not perfect. Any fluent Japanese person knows Hanzo’s ult isn’t said as well as it could be.
You can’t force him to learn a language he doesn’t know if he doesn’t want to. Afaik, Lucio’s VA just wanted to learn it to make the character better. If Hanzo’s doesn’t want to then there’s not much anyone can do. Blizzard knew this when hiring this person. They wanted him because he captured the essence of Hanzo, which is by far the more important thing when it comes to being a VA.
Pretty much nailed it. I think it’s fantastic that Jonny went out of his way to learn Portuguese (apparently it’s not too shabby for a non-native speaker as well) for his role as Lucio, and I’d love for other voice actors to do it as well, but I certainly don’t expect it.
Reinhardt as a character is far more important than Reinhardt as a German Speaker.
Wait, Torb’s voice actor is to get some lines in Swedish? I mean, the language isn’t super hard, but the cadence is pretty difficult to get right even for people who moved here years ago.
But hey, if he’s up for the effort I’m very interested to hear how it will sound!
