Paul Nakauchi is not fluent in Japanese and has limited/almost no Japanese voice lines because he feels he cannot do them justice/up to his standard. He was born in Los Angeles, CA, whereas Genji’s voice actor, Gaku Space, was born in Tokyo, Japan.
The only reason Lucio has some Portuguese voice lines now is because his voice actor, Jonny Cruz spent a lot of time pushing to get the lines recorded and spent more time after that learning the lines and pronunciation.
I suspected this might be the case considering their respective filmographies and work histories, but I wasn’t aware of any specific interview where they expressed this opinion towards their jobs.

I do wonder where this confidence came from and if you’ve confirmed your speaking fluency and pronunciation with a native speaker, and if so, which dialect you specialize in.
I will agree that some people simply acquire languages faster, so maybe you are one of those exceptional speakers, but it’s definitely not normal. If you can do that, there is actually a huge market for you in the military and the acting industry.
Otherwise, if you honestly think you can do a better job, apply for the VA position. Your fluency skill will be highly valued.

Yeah, makes total sense for hero’s to just change their character and start shouting things in their native tongue that they never did for near 2 years.
I mean i get it, its cool for those into the different voice lines/languages, but I wasnt into Lucio because he’s from Brazil, and speaking Portugese has literally nothing to do with his character.
He was an upbeat, positive outlook, joyful, international DJ, who spoke ENGLISH, clear as day, and liked hockey.
You can like it all you want, this isnt ‘character development’ by any stretch.
Its not even just his ult, they gave him a ‘hello’ too.
Just give me an option for the original voice lines, thats all I ask…hell, I’ll even PAY for it.

For the life of me, I’ll never understand why people think not being fluent in a language is a valid reason for a voice actor to not learn a few lines in it. They don’t need to be able to understand or converse in it, they simply need to pronounce it correctly in a situation where they have multiple takes do to so.
Even stage and film actors are expected to learn and perform varying accents and vocal intonation all the time, voice actors are specialized in it. Do people really think the Overwatch voice actors are so poor at their trade?

I seem to recall reading somewhere that the guy speaks no Japanese, and had to be taught the line, and had to practice it a ton to be able to say it right, and on and on.
Adding more might be one of those “not particularly worth it” kind of things on their end.
If they do that “You are already dead.” Voice line, they need to give Gengu a “Nani?!” One as well.
It would be even cooler that both characters get both lines!
