Is there a "counter" list?

just wondering if anyone has a good website that one could go read up…that will help people counter pick. for example…if one team has…for example a genji…what support counters him, or what tank or what dps?

or if one team has a reinhardt…what dps and support counters are best for dealing with that tank…etc.

just looking for a comprehensive list of counters to a particular character…if one exists…

Sadly we do not have any statistics on what heroes do better against other heroes. Counters typically change a lot depending on the hero’s balancing. In addition fights can go either way, even if you are playing a hero that supposedly counters the hero your enemy is using.

That being said, I would be carefully when looking at old counter lists. As an example, some of them would classify Cassidy (back then as McCree) as a counter to Tracer. Even though currently Tracer is more so a counter to him. Cassidy had hard CC in OW1 but lost it in OW2. Making Tracer stronger against him.

Not that I’m aware of. Are you looking for something specific? Maybe someone here can help? Also checkout r/OverwatchUniversity on Reddit. If something exists, that’s probably where it would be.

well, im just hoping to get some insights into how to counter certain classes. i play support mainly, and so, lets say im on Ana…but the other team has a genji or a doomfits…which are both dive classes, and they often jump into the back line and start killing the supports. so then i start thinking, ok, what support do I need to play in order to help keep the genji or doomfist at bay…or at least help me survive those encounters.

or…what if im playing mercy and the other team has a soldier 76, or a bastion…who do i pick to remain effective…

or, if im playing a tank, such as rein, and the other team has an orissa, do I stay as rein or is there a better counter to orissa? or do i just need to copy and go orissa myself…

those are the kinds of things im looking for. in that vein.

So, on Ana, save your sleep dart for when you get dove. But also, it’s best for supports to play together. Ana / Brig gives a good counter dive strategy because Brig can help protect the Ana. Brig plays close to Ana and helps peel.

Frankly, Mercy is still fine here. Rez is powerful against a Bastion comp. And you can damage boost your own Bastion. But Bap is probably better because he’s tanky, can output his own damage, and has lamp.

Don’t stay Rein. Orisa is a Rein counter. Play Orisa yourself or Zarya depending on whether they have a Bastion or not. D.Va is not a counter to Orisa, but I’m a D.Va main so I can make it work. It’s a neutral matchup, but if high ground exits then it gives an edge to D.Va. You can also play other dive tanks like Winston or Doom against Orisa (again as long as there’s no other dive counters). The trick is to not go for the Orisa, but for the supports. In that scenario, ignore Orisa.

I hope this is helpful

thanks, i do like playing winston when i go tank…for that reason…to dive into the supports

You have to think about WHY they are giving YOU trouble or your teammates trouble and then try to solve for that.

Hog diff’ing your team? Ana for the nade.

Genji killing everyone, Moira to harass him or some mobile support that is hard to pin down, or maybe Brig to peel for your co-support… honestly every single support counters his a$$ at this point…

I can speak about my two mains:
Ball:
If I’m doing well, the opposing team will usually pick characters like Mei, Sombra, Junkrat, Orisa, Doomfist, Brigitte, Ana. Sometimes the whole of the other team is focussing on countering me but can’t… good times.

Brig:
Brig is a nice counter to Sigma… not sure what my counters are cuz I tend to win most 1v1 but lately, good Reapers have made me see red. Reinhardt is scary af, I did win a (long) 1v1 once against a Reinhardt but they probably were learning the character. I can run towards most tanks and know I will win because she’s so close range all you gotta do is hamper the other player physically (turn around the enemy character so they can’t follow with their mouse).

edit: ye, of course Ramattra in fisty form will counter brig HARD

Just pick sombra against almost everything and dont forget shot the nade against the enemy.

I really don’t feel much has changed at all with hero balancing. Torbjorn turret is still insanely annoying against every flanker making him prime for it. Most match-ups from fighting games might go up or down +/-5 points.

Only on large reworks would anything change like Orisa losing shield for example. Zenyatta is stronger against Orisa than say in the past.

Dunno, just comes from time and experience

Moria counters genji, but it is more of a soft counter, so it depends who pounces on who 1st, but all in all counters are subjective assessment, for instance as a support i like countering tracer with a mercy I is that her pistol is fun and for me is ez to hit a blinking and recalling tracer. the fire rate of the pistol is perfect for the tracer fighting temp, not to mention i know where tracers recall is at any time cause i count the time during the engagement, so she usually needs to retreated or die trying after recall, but that me.

but if you want 1 here is 1

Most of the match-ups in OW to me are predominately arguable to be like 55-45 or 50-50 sort of situations.

Moira vs Genji I’d say for avg players is more of a 55-45 Moira while its a 55-45 Genji at higher levels. Catch Moira without fade and pounce her.

Something like Sombra vs Ball to me is a more solid 65-35 against Ball for your typical players.

Some match-ups make really no statistical sense. Mercy vs DPS really doesn’t matter too much.

i like playing brig, but she can be so frustrating to me. i see other people play her and just run in, swing her mace and everything falls down, but I run in swing my mace, and it’s like it is doing half damage or something…nothing ever seems to die.

but, ill try it next time and see to kinda shadow the ana.

That’s how you used to be able to play Brig. Launch Brig was insane! Now, it’s better to play her defensively. Guard the other support. Proc inspire every time you can. And choose when to go in. If you pick your moments well, then things fall over.

That is fair, generally counter lists from OW2 from season 1 should be fine. However counter lists from OW1 should be viewed carefully as OW2 had hero reworks and CC changes. There are also heroes like Sombra and Symmetra who are kind of all over the place in terms of what they counter or get countered by.

That said, things like pinpoint hitscan countering Pharah is still true for both OW1 and OW2.

yeah, i watched a video of a top player explaining that…im trying to use her more, but there are times when there’s just so much focus fire that i struggle to keep inspire up.

Pick zarya, she counter everyone.

Unless you can’t play her like at all. (like me)

Dude even a cow with her eyes closed can play that braindead hero. She doesn’t require much skills.
