Is Overwatch 2 a new game or an expansion?

Please let it be an expansion.

There’s really no need to split up the community in two by making two separate games.

edit: I think some people might be a bit confused by what I mean.
I mean that will Overwatch 1, in its current form, still exist as a separate game or will Overwatch 2 replace it? Like an overhaul/DLC to the original game.

It’s already been said that while Overwatch 2 is a sequel, its main gameplay is still the same, and so both Overwatch and Overwatch 2 can play together under normal games. The big thing Overwatch 2 will have is PvE content and exclusive unlockables.

How is it by now people are so ignorant of how this is going down?

OW 2 is merely an upgrade of the core game; for PVP and all you have now, it’s free. If you want the PVE content, its a paid access.

Because not everyone reads and follows every word or video blizzard or overwatch puts out. That’s why op asked in forums. No need to criticize.

I mean a casual search will reveal the way its going to work. So yeah, there is a case for criticism when people ask the same question 50 times. Google anyone?

It’s a pve addition.

I’m just sticking with pvp and the legacy unlocks. Doesn’t really interest me

Overwatch and Overwatch 2 players will be able to play against each other in PvP.

OW1 will be merged into OW2 PvP with all game modes, maps, and hero’s. You’ll get all those for free. OW2 will be the PvE and reskins

It’s an expansion that’s too big to distribute on consoles, so they’re selling it as a sequel.
