I’m pretty sure that extends beyond religion. I’ve had teachers tell me that in school growing up.

You have Violent Criminal #9, who cuts off people’s fingers and breaks kneecaps for fun, but you know he’s religious because he admonishes people for swearing and he doesn’t drink.
As for teachers telling kids not to swear, that goes back to the ‘proper behavior’ thing, since schools are supposed to inoculate children with behavior appropriate to society, and which is largely based in the dominant cultural religion/moral code.
