Iraq being a "first world" nation?

Okay I may be wrong at using the word “first world”, but like, how did Iraq (Oasis) become such advanced in the Overwatch world?

The years of 2024 are quite far apart from the 2060s and 2070s so ig it’s enough time for the currently unstable nation of Iraq to develop such an advanced city named “Oasis”. But who’s funding it? How did Iraq even developed in that time span of 50 years?

Not to mention that there’s such thing as the Omnic Crisis. I don’t know a lot about it since I don’t care about the lore, but is Iraq not affected by it? And if not, how?

I don’t find any canon information about Iraq other than Oasis from blizzard tho

And lastly, do y’all think that it’s possible for our Iraq to become like Overwatch’s Iraq in the future?

Well, the fact of not getting much affected by the crisis applies to multiple maps such as Busan or Numbani, so maybe Oasis has strong defense or maybe no one wants to damage it, maybe talon doesn’t want wars in it due its scientific importance, there should be a lore behind the reason

Regarding Iraq, actually Iraq is rich in oil and I think has a good amount of other resources, yeah the current state is depressing and has doesn’t look bright at all, though there is a possibility of Iraq rising up again and even further, but of course it’s a long way

There is a single interview by Jeff Kaplan about Iraq and Overwatch.

They simply wanted to create an alternative reality of the future, to break away from the stereotype a little, to find for once a “neutral” consideration in a place that has always been afflicted by wars.

Numbani in a way follows a similar logic, but from a Sci-Fi (Afrofuturism) rather than an alternative point of view. Even Junkertown could have this same logic of “alternative world” from an anarchic and post-apocalyptic point of view (Max Max)

A clarification: Oasis often has quite controversial cultural elements, since despite the architectural style, it follows many of the paradigms of luxury of Dubai (in the United Arab Emirates). A similar paradox occurred for Ilios which, despite the name being a derivative of the ancient city of Troy, is instead largely inspired by the island of Santorini, which is in a completely different geographical position. But it’s also an interesting option: a city that’s not only luxurious, but generally scientifically ambitious, far from social restrictions (a bit like Rapture in Bioshock).

These are honestly the most interesting narratives, in my opinion, because they create a social revolution that is not entirely unusual even today: countries like South Korea or Singapore were completely different just 30 years ago, and if Overwatch is set 60 years in the future… anything is possible, in a fast-paced world.

Here you must forgive me if I correct you but… it is a big mistake to make current politics an exactly reflection of the game. The future of Overwatch remains a sci-fi fantasy written in our 2010s. There has only been one recent case in which we have seen the lore describe a situation that actually happened in reality over the course of these years: the global health emergency. It is in the declassified book, but they used it to set up a narrative based on the union of various countries in scientific research, starting first with health emergencies and then with technological development for the environment.

Unfortunately, this “eco-sustainable sequel” is not happening nicely in reality. Political-religious wars are re-emerging, and political scandals are mixed with economic interests. But it must always be remembered that Overwatch describes in its own motto a “fight for a better future”. It is however something less nihilistic than many other video games that have already imagined a post-nuclear scenario or similar.

I think they had the name Ilios based on the Greek background of it since the map is in Greece, Troy (correct me if I’m wrong) has been conquered by Ancient Greece, maybe the name Ilios is related to Troy but it doesn’t have to be exclusive to it

Iraq literally has the cradle of civilization within its borders, and the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Baghdad isn’t 3rd world at all, and has multiple universities. Heck, the University of Technology campus is actually a little nicer than Oasis.

I think you’re underselling Iraq.

The ancient city if Troy was across the Aegean sea from Greece, in Turkey, at the villiage of Hisarlik.

He’s right that the map is clearly Santorini, and I suspect that the name Ilios was just to reference the sun and didn’t have anything to do with Troy.

When you search Iraq on Google, the results are mostly about the negative sides tho. Also, is current Baghdad even well developed? I hope so

Yes, it is quite modern, even moreso since the postvwar reconstruction… We tend to underestimate places we are unfamiliar with.
