The steam playerbase of tf2 seems to be solid and still going, if valve were to just brush it up a bit with say source 2 coat and relaunch it on next gen consoles, it will overtake overwatch right.
Cause silently this old game has been peaking a lot since last july when overwatch pve was cancelled.
And this season it seems to be hitting highs never before in years. with a bit of polish it can takeover overwatch ?
TF2 and OW2 are class based tmea games but the comparison stops there.
TF2 is all about chaotic fun meant to be played 12v12.
OW is sold as competitive more serious game, designed for 6v6/5v5.
TF2 was born in a world where online gaming was just about having fun, before LoL.
Since 2010, a lot of multiplayers games are all about players ego, making them think they play an esport competition.
That’s why Valve has released 2 CS versions instead of updating TF2. The target audience has changed.
This, I feel like a relic from the days of chaotic fun.
Even now I feel no connection to any other Overwatch fan, They are either hyper competitive or just too driven by amorous desire for the characters, Trying to get friends to join is impossible due to past news rumors or can’t look past the bad press but they will beg me for weeks to play their preferred MMO.
It’s me and my hero picks for now.
Almost every character in TF2 can oneshot. But as you’re in 12v12, its not a big deal to get headshot.
Also TF2 is clearly and willingly unbalanced. You will need a Medic to take down a level 3 turret. You can handle a 8s invulnerable “Dva” in TF2. Yet the Übercharge is still gamebreaking.
But as there are only 9 “heroes”, counterpicking is easier to read. They also more versatile than OW heroes.
If you have correct timing, angle and taunts (aka emotes in OW2 language), you can taunt them in the freezecam (some TF2 achievement actually requires you to do freezecam taunts).
Getting schadenfreuded (laughed at) after death is more insulting than getting t-bag’d.
I get what you’re saying, since most people love constant updates, but to me if a game is fun enough I’ll still put hundreds of hours into it even if they don’t put anything new into it.
I still play EDF 4.1 and EDF 5 with friends. I play Payday 2 more now that it’s “done” updating than when they were pumping out DLC every month. I’m much more tempted to try out more TF2 (I tried years ago but it didn’t quite click with me at the time) now than I am to try out OW2 again, especially after hearing the changes.
Updates aren’t inherently a bad thing, but I don’t think they’re inherently a good thing either. If something’s enjoyable and you try to shake it up to make it less stale but wind up making it less enjoyable through an update, then it probably wasn’t a good update.
The most popular pvp shooters do it pretty often. CoD and FN trade back and forth as the most played pvp shooter and its usually about who made the latest big update
I know valve abandoned it except for some random patches by 1 dev, but its still going, especially growing.
Its doubled its playerbase in last two years.
Right now it has same current players as COD on steam, i know COD real numbers is huge, R6 on steam and battlefield, its a top 25 game on steam with active playerbase thats not going down thats no small feat.
Esp for something abandoned by devs.
So maybe there is something there to be restored with a fresh coat of paint
if you knew anything about the situation you should know 60% of those numbers are bots. half of them making casual and even community servers unplayable while the other half farming loot. just go to a community server almost any server that has 24 "players"are all bots
That still doesn’t make an update inherently good. If CoD put in an update that halved the damage of all guns except for one, which suddenly quintupled in damage, that’s an update. But just because it’s an update doesn’t mean it’s going to make the game more enjoyable or better to play.
Updating because there’s something good to add is usually a good thing. Updating for the sake of updating isn’t.
