I think every hero should have technology instead of magic

Some stuff can be magic-like, but I think it’s more interesting if it’s somewhat explained and is perhaps achievable technology in the near/distant future (is 42 years near or distant?)

This technology can be anything from Reinhardt’s bomb on a stick, to Soldier: 76’s super soldier serum overdose, to Reaper’s CRAWLING IN MY SKIN, to Illari getting a tattoo from the sun.

Most healing is just nanobots son. Mercy has a stream of nanobots in her staff that either repair your cells (like a million different surgeons operating on you at once) or making your gun more powerful (like a million different engineers operating on you at once).

Ana put Mercy’s tech into a gun, Baptiste probably has something similar, as does Soldier: 76.

Roadhog distils something, maybe Fanta, maybe leaded paint, but whatever it is it heals him and it tastes good.

Moira doesn’t use nanobots, instead her necrotic arm drains the life out of cells, then Moira collects the dead cells in the tank on her back, and her machine turns these dead cells into zombified antibodies that she sprays out on people to accelerate their cellular repair (like a millions different surgeons telling you how to operate on yourself at once).

Moira canonically cannot heal or damage Omnics as they have no organic cells to manipulate or destroy. I guess there’s also no reason to suggest that Mercy’s or anyone’s healing can affect Omnics in the lore either.

Symmetra’s arm and gun condense light into physical material, like laser beams or automated sentry turrets. I’m going to say that these laser beams can cut through atoms in the air, and manipulate them to become different atoms, so structures can literally be built out of thin-air by having atoms cut into shape.

Lifeweaver’s can probably use this same logic to make plants. I looked it up and plants are made out of a combination of hydrogen, oxygen and carbon atoms I guess? So yeah, I guess Lifeweaver can cut atoms into artifical plants. If Symmetra can instantly build an automated sentry and a teleporter, Lifeweaver can make plants with all of the chlorophyll or whatever plants need to function, except its pink because Lifeweaver is zesty.

Hanzo and Genji perhaps commune with an AI. Not a God AI like Anubis or maybe Athena, but a smaller AI that’s more about ‘call and response’ and it can’t really think for itself. The dragons are powered by ChatGPT I guess…

If Hanzo need to obliterate his enemies, the AI tells the nanobots in his tattoo to “LMAO just summon 2 dragons, it’ll be funny”.

If Hanzo needs to aura-farm, the AI tells the nanobots in his tattoo to “LMAO just summon 2 dragons, it’ll be funny”.

If Hanzo needs to butter his toast, the AI tells the nanobots in his tattoo to “LMAO just summon 2 dragons, it’ll be funny”.

Wuyang uses his staff to pressurize and shoot out water. This water is laced with the healing nanobots that Mercy pioneered, so that’s why they can heal, and his healing works exactly the same as Mercy’s does from the gameplay trailer it seems.

Since the water is full of microplastics nanomachines son, Wuyang can also freely change it’s direction with the maglev technology built into his glove, which is why he points to where the water needs to pivot.

The nanobots just fly back inside the staff and Wuyang just finds some more regular water to refill his staff, or maybe the nanobots bring the water back too.

I guess the nanobots could also purify water too, making it safe to drink and eliminating microplastics. Wuyang just wanted to put his water into a gun.

Illari got solar-powered tattoos all over her body. Perhaps she functions like a living battery now, either using her body’s own chemical reactions to fuel her gun, or maybe it’s even just microscopic solar panels all over her body that absorb and condense sunlight into a laser beam.

Also obligatory nano-bots because a solar-powered laser beam is performing surgery on a bullet wound. I guess she just charges her nanobot army?

Ramattra is confirmed to also have nanobots, but I guess not the healing kind. Maybe he designed them himself because they are bigger and more violent.

The orbs perhaps have their own technology inside of them and respond to the temperature or chemical reactions of its human user, and likewise the electrical connection emitted from Omnics. Zenyatta gave Symmetra an orb in one of the comics, so that’s why I think it reacts to humans as well, otherwise Zenyatta is throwing.

Zenyatta as previously mentioned uses electrical signals to ‘call and respond’ with his orbs, but the floating is probably just maglev.

I imagine that the Shimbali aren’t all that magical because of their religion, but instead they feel a spiritual connection because a part of Aurora is literally inside of them. She communicated with every Omnic when she sacrificed herself, so a part of her programming must be in all of them, and they are all copying her programming, which gives them sophisticated enough minds to simulate intelligence.

I don’t think we’ve seen Zenyatta float in lore, he was either meditatin on the ground at the end of the Invasion PvE mission cutscenes, or just standing like a goofy goober next to Genji in some of the teasers from…February 2021…damn  .

I have no idea how to explain Kiriko, she is so stupid and I hate her.

Kiriko is 17 years older than she is currently, so she’s 38 now, and maybe her Kitsune shrine are also religious/spiritual in the same way as Zenyatta, but they only commune with ChatGPT in place of their fox gods. Kiriko also summons a spirit fox made out of nanobots whenever she needs to aura-farm.

Having a stance that you prefer tech is fine. I get it. Not everyone wants magic to be a part of the universe. But when the Blizzard devs release a statement saying that there is no magic in Overwatch, they are just gaslighting us. There clearly is. You can explain some things with tech if you want but they aren’t necessarily all best explained by tech. And Kiriko is obviously magic. They even said as much before. Now they are saying she isn’t. It’s gaslighting straight up. They changed their mind and now they want us to pretend like it never happened. It reminds me of the time they tried to retcon D.Va as not a gamer.

I think the universe is better as sci-fi, as that was how it was described back in 2016, and I wanted to offer my own explanation as to how some of the more magical sounding heroes could function with technology instead.

Kiriko is probably just magic because the devs don’t know how to explain it. That’s why I tried with Kiriko and by extension Hanzo and Genji, because the story team wouldn’t. They probably just wanted their uwu cutesy magical girl and left it at that.

And trying to retcon D.Va out of being a gamer is utterly moronic, I’ve never heard of that but on the bright side that attempted retcon likely happened a long time ago and that one person in particular probably got fired, alongside 99% of everyone else working on Overwatch as collateral…

Nanobiotics, not nanobots!

It’s actually the same position they’ve always held, even since OW1. They’ve always said there’s no magic in Overwatch, which is just because they don’t consider their version of magic to be magic. They consider it “spirituality” :face_with_spiral_eyes:

They never did this. They retconned her being a Starcraft pro because they wanted her to be a pro at a game that would better fit her skillset for being a mech fighter.

Yeah no idea what the Hell that is, might still be healing nanobots made out of organic materials for all we know.

Or maybe Mercy pioneered Moira’s healing technology too. Poor Moira…

Yeah I heard of that specifically. What game is she a pro at now?

It’s not that they wanted to explain it and couldn’t. They flat out made a whole deal about the fox spirit and the power of the shrine. Her powers are spiritual in lore. Or at least they were until this week.

I think the only hero that actually uses nanobots is Ramattra. Mercy actually tells us she doesn’t use them in her short story:

“Science,” I said with a smile. “Much better than magic. Have you ever heard of nanobiotics?”

“Is it like… little machines?” She made a little motion like there was a cloud of flies.

“Not quite,”

I don't know what nanobiotics are specifically, but I think they're just supposed to be really tiny medicinal particles.

It’s an in-universe game called “Mecha Guardian V”

She’s still a very good Starcraft player though I will add. Just not the #1 pro.

I guess Mercy’s is more ethical and Moira just gives you healing cancer.

I also know that Ana put Mercy’s heal juice into her gun and there’s also abilities called Biotic Field and Biotic Grenade, so I guess Mercy’s haling stuff is everywhere and is just some fancy medicine.

Maybe Moira’s is renewable, since it can be farmed off of dead people, and also used to…make more dead people.

I understand what you are saying, but they never replaced Star Craft with a different game. There’s the game in her emote, but they never said she was a pro at that to my knowledge. She’s just streaming it. They just said “it was a misconception that she was ever a StarCraft pro”.

She was a StarCraft pro from the very beginning. It’s where her voice line about APM came from. She even had her own fake player profile that they took down when they tried to retcon her. That too was basically gaslighting because Michael Chu stated it as if it was a misconception. There was no misconception. We were directly told this via multiple sources.

Spirituality, magic, whatever you want to call it. It’s not tech. It’s supernatural gifts either way. They are splitting hairs if this is what they mean because again Kiriko is clearly doing something supernatural not technological.

This is already part of Illari’s background, her Heroes page says shes basically filled with fiber optic cables.

“Inti Warriors – an augmented group of noble protectors and masters of harnessing solar energy.”
“In order to store and control the sun’s power, each Inti Warrior was imbued with solar threading.”

Damn! Well done!

You put a lot of thought into these exotic technologies. You should work for the Dev team :sunglasses:

They did! They replaced it with Mecha Guardian V. It’s in the lore blurb for her academy skin.

But yes, Michael Chu was strange for how he worded that tweet.

Agreed. They are splitting hairs.

watch the next hero be some sort of fallen god/angel like from paladins or smite 2

zues or something, oh yea… remember we have a zues junkerqueen skin heh

The next hero is just joe normalman who has a gun, 9 to 5 and below minimum wage. They’re so boring their name doesn’t even have caps.

And then there’s FGP’;MUSUPP][M who is just straight up an angel from the 7th dimension.

joe normalman beat FGP’;MUSUPP][M at arm wrestling once.

The thing about spirits is that they are quasi-universal. Each civilization has them in some shape or form. The other part is that the shimadas fight normally most of the time, with somewhat conventional weapons, and only use their spirits during crucial moments, aka ultimates.

The water bending boy breaks the subtlety that was present to this date.
His entire kit is about water bending. The concept itself is historically associated with magic and has no scientific foundation.

people are so upset about wuyangs magic ruining their immersion but
pretty princess pink thor reinhardt with a purple galaxy demon axe screaming ARE YOU CHICKEN at the top of his lungs is normal?

i also always thought reinhardt as a character in cyberpunk future world was weird. knights in armor with huge hammers? i mean thats just them inserting mideviel warfare into cyberpunk

they probably just wanted a world of warcraft tank in the game. then you got an actual dwarf hero that is torbjorn. he looks like hes from ironforge in world of warcraft heh

maybe the game is more like the warhammer 40k space marines world. i think there is magic in that world or the future version of warhammer

Those are just cosmetics, Reinhardt’s lore is still “big man with bigger hammer going to give you a super concussion.”

And Wuyang isn’t really explained. He built the staff to shoot water out quickly, but now he’s controlling them remotely with finger gestures?

Just wish they’d put in some effort to explain Wuyang and Kiriko. They explained Illari’s sun tattoos, Hazard’s goop spikes, even Lifeweaver’s artificial plants.

Kiriko? Dead grandma. Wuyang? …disappointed parents? He just straight up went to Chinese’s Hogwarts, where the one English character is named Timothy Edwards Arthur, or TEA for short.

Yeah pretty much, Reinhardt and Torbjorn were references to Blizzard’s other franchises to help fans of those franchises to latch onto something in Overwatch, but still with some extra tech in there like a robot claw or rocket propelled armour, so it’s still futuristic.

If they wanted they could’ve given Torbjorn magic runes to build his turrets out of stone like a golem, but they gave him molten metal rivets instead. But then Kiriko just throws magic toilet paper I guess.

lol that made me laugh but yea it seemed like it started with kiriko. still genji and hanzo were kind of ridiculed for magic in the overwatch lore but explained with hard light tech or something

but comon… a guy with a bow and arrow and a cyborg ninja (sword that can deflect bullets-yea right). its just self insert ancient japan warfare into a future weapon world. so in a way it should be silly but they try and explain it away

i just look at the game as a saturday morning cartoon. not take it to seriously but still i understand if people get mad about them going off the deep end with magic and maybe gods later

Explain Mcrees air rolling immortality.
