High Latency Recently

Hello,

Lately I’ve experienced lag spikes, rubber banding, and overall high latency in Overwatch. My typical latency has been in the low 40’s, but lately I’ve been in the 90’s-100’s with spikes up over 200ms. I turned on the network graph and I see a lot of orange highlighted bars and I see both orange network icons in the upper left side of the screen when in-game.

I ran a tracert with the IP that shows in-game (24.108.40.84) and I see no issues until I get about 7-8 hops in. Below is the output from the Battle.net looking glass. Please let me know what else I can show to help identify the issue.

A WinMTR is the tool you’ll want for tracking down lag issues. The looking glass only pings the authentication server for logging in.

The second test shows huge lag spikes to the modem, some over 3.2 full seconds. If you’re playing on WiFi you may have some interference or issue happening with the networking hardware.

Same here, since Tracer challenge patch, I gained about 40 of ping extra…

Their test shows the issue on their home network, so I don’t think this is patch-related.

Thank you. That helps explain the spikes of 200ms+ but doesn’t really explain the consistently higher latency during the other periods. In the first result the avg was only 13ms on the modem, but the hop to 69.174.129.154 and the hop to eqix-ix-ch1.blizzard,com seems to have abnormal averages.

Blizzard nodes are setup to ignore some ping traffic, like the kind that WinMTRs use. This is a defense mechanism to prevent DDoS attacks from wreaking havoc on their network. As a result, it sporadically inflates the values on those hops.

That last test looks good, but you already noted that you’re seeing the connection trouble icons. And we also caught an issue in one of your previous tests, so I think we have already figured out this is a local connection problem.
