Help, I went from 200+ fps in overwatch to barely 80 fps(Fixed)

Specs: GPU: Rx 580
CPU: ryzen 5 1400x
Ram: 8 GB 2400 ddr4
Note that I have overclocked my CPU and GPU, could this have something to do with it?

I built this PC about 2 years ago and It performed perfectly, I could easily get a steady 210 fps with all setting turned down and with 100% render scale. Recently (6 months ago) it started having performance issues and I struggled to hit even 144 fps, so I quit the game as I had gotten bored of it. I recently came back to overwatch (2 weeks ago) and my PC is struggling even more. I can not get a steady 80 fps with 75% render scale, sometimes dipping into the 50’s and 60’s. This may not seem like much of a problem to most but (as the name implies) I play tracer and have gotten so used to 144 fps that I simply lose my aim at 80 fps. I just want to go back to the good old days of a steady 144 fps

UPDATE: I FIXED THE ISSUE
Just wanted to do a little update and say that I fixed it!!! I reverted all my overclocks and it went back to good old 220 fps, I honestly don’t know why but from now on I will be very careful when overclocking my rig. I must have overclocked it too much, GPU was most likely throttling

if the performances change out of the blue you can usually revert back with a restoration point (rstrui.exe in the cortana field to access it easily)

now that you waited 6months before really checking into it you can forget that option.

seems like a case of format and restart fresh.
clean off the dust in the heatsinks while youre at it

You have to be very careful with this suggestion - it can help on some platforms but many (if not most) this can actually hurt performance. Depends a lot on the exact hardware.

I kinda assume almost all people aren’t doing professional grade artwork or science on their gaming machine.

Download HWMonitor and check to see if anything is overheating. I had this problem awhile ago.

I mean it can hurt gaming performance. There are plenty of documented cases online where it has helped some people and caused problems for others. More often than not suggestions like this can actually make the problem worse.

Aside from that, it’s highly unlikely that this would be a factor in a 120fps drop in performance over time. It would have been an issue from day 1.

So once you found out that (presumably) your temps were too high, how did you go about fixing that?

Open up your pc and get some canned air to blow the dust out. Just do your best to clean it. Also look at the environment your pc is in. Is it on carpet, are all the fans blocked, etc.

If you’re comfortable with it, removing the graphics card and the heatsink on the cpu would make them easier to clean. But be sure to clean and reapply thermal paste to your cpu before reinstalling the heatsink.

For me I had to replace the thermal paste between my cpu and heat sink.

Your system is pretty good but your memory is a bit low. It’s plenty adequate for running overwatch on its own, but if you have even just a few chrome tabs open I could see you reaching the limit real quick.

I’d open up task manager and just look at what resources are being consumed and maxed out. That will usually tell you where the problem area is.

I never have anything open in the background. My PC is only for gaming and I never use it to use Google. However, when my PC is struggling I’ve noticed that my Disk section in the task manager is at 100%. Could this be the issue?

When did you overclock your hardware?

So a few things can cause your disk to peg. It could indeed be ram, as when ram runs out it starts dumping to the hard drive.

It could also be caused by a bad sector on the drive that is constantly trying to be accessed. This can be a minor thing or a sign of a hdd failure. I recommend running chkdsk (Google how)

Oh, I also forgot to mention, it could just be full. If you have less than like 5gb free space your drive will choke.

Almost a month after I built my PC, so like 2 years ago

HI,
Do you have this performance issue in any games or just in Overwatch?

ever since the moira update the games performance has been hanging itself, every update since then my performance degraded with each patch (the drops with each patch where minimal luckly) , then the hamster nation update attacked… since hammond was added, Winston and his particle lovin buddies decided that they should drop my fps to 30 every time they attacked me, so did every hero in the hero select screen… i remember the good old days of 4k max settings 150% render scale and playable fps, forever lost. . .

Other games like Fortnite have been suffering too.
