I use to watch vods and went from silver to diamond as Lucio. With the replay feature I probably should do it again. Especially when playing dps.
Anyways there can be various things to look for. Your team dying and to what, who you focus on and when. Maybe just if you’re over or under aiming at times to see if you need to adjust your sensitivity slightly.
Probably most useful though is if you can find a gm/top 500 or coach to review your vod. They can give you various things to look at, some you maybe haven’t thought of, and then think back to their advice when you review your later vods
I’m hard stuck in plat bro… T-T
I watch VOD, practice my aim, etc, but can’t climb. I tried to apply whatever the pro said about the game still can’t climb. maybe I’m just a noob hahahaha.

funny how people spam threads that blame their teammates for losses but whoever asks how to improve no one replies…

I went from around 2600 to 3700 through self VOD review. Though, this was like a year and a half ago.

I think finding coach would be much effective because as you will go higher, things you didnt even think about before will starting to make difference and you will notice it on your own. I mean you can but process will be much slower.

Vod crunching is definitely the best way to go. I’ve just started to do it this season and so far I’ve climbed 500 sr off of it on my main role, but make sure you’re reviewing effectively.
- watch professional coaches do vod reviews on youtube to give a sense of what you should be (Jayne is the most high profile example)
- watch some pro gameplay as well that way you know the play style which you’re aiming to best emulate
- I was personally told by a coach I know who worked with Avalla (she worked with DC Justice last season) that after every loss you should review the vod. Not only do you see your mistakes, but you also dodge queue and untilt
You also need the right mentality when it comes to improving as well. Skyline made a really underrated series of videos over the summer and they really helped me shape my gameplay and feel a lot better coming out of games (including losses).

Older video, so the specific examples are now out of date, but the general idea of what to look for and how to review a vod are still relevant.
I’ve climbed from 1600 lowest to 4150 peak. Self vod reviews were an important part of my climbing, but I do think mixing in reviews from higher ranked players is an important part of improving as well.

Is there any point, ya just chase that sr, get high, get muppets on your team, lose sr, fall, then try again, , oh much like gambling to get your money back from a loss.

I climbed a whole rank just from reveiwing my own footage, and I don’t even play Competitive all that frequently. But perhaps just as importantly, you should compare your own play with higher ranked player’s footage. It honestly does wonders for your gameplay and I wish I could convince the friends I enjoy playing with to do the same. I know this sounds strange, but I feel like playing OW is perhaps one of the worst ways to learn OW. You can’t realistically learn everything through experience over time, you have to reach out to resources out there and invest the time to really learn the game. This is an amazing tool to supplement reviewing your own gameplay. Do them both in conjunction, be disciplined, and be honest with yourself, and you’ll see yourself start to climb.

Look for everything. Its not just watching but a thinking/studying process
What happened, what results it made and how would you react next time when you see it.
Especially focus on parts where you:
1.Get killed by enemy hero
2.Fail to kill enemy hero.

I had a GM review my genji play (was new to genji) at like border of gold\plat. Helped me a ton, and very quickly got to diamond. However, I think low diamond is about as far as I could go with that character once I realized how weak he was in the current meta. Also the healers want to play moira not like ana-lucio to help you out. So I basically realized I should not be playing genji even though the VOD review helped a ton. Just play same character doomfist that actually kills stuff.

Do you use the replay system?
Makes it so much easier since you can see more than just your perspective

Yeah that’s how I climbed. I went from 1000 SR in season 12 to almost 3600 now. When reviewing your own vod keep an open mind and realize that you are looking for YOUR mistakes. See how you and you alone effected gameplay. If you notice you missed shots that could have won a fight, ult management, positioning, time spent dead, maybe you could have picked a hero that counters them better.

This is huge guys, so much valuable info here. Those youtube links are really helpful.
I have few questions id like to ask,
I now realised that my target priority is pretty damn bad which is something i never noticed before. Its fine when there is someone out of position, however as soon as there is a big brawl i noticed in replays i tend to shoot everyone, from few shots on the tank, to support and keep switching. Its odd and i never noticed that before. I guess from a dps point of view, priority should always be support in a brawl. Obviously if the all of the enemy team is behind shield and i cant get angle, ill shoot shield until i see an opening, or unless the shield is about to break. Is this correct?
next question is i keep seeing when you do a vod review, pay attention to your mechanics. Im not sure if i understand how to review your aim. Example, if im shooting from soft flank, im landing shots, if someone has noticed me and there is a 1v1 duel i do miss shots. I have seen people in GM miss shots also. So how do you review your mechanics? For every shot missed you pause and make a conclusion? Really not understanding this.
Thanks for your help!

When I first started playing my first ever placement was 2300. Within about two months I had 3 accounts. I would grind one account up to a goal like 2600 then get another account there and then the other account. Then continue grinding on one account to 2700. Eventually I improved by doing this. Not just because I put time in and I feel like my 3 account system made it so I was less prone to tilting. If I were to get a loss streak on one account I’d be like pfft my other two accounts are 2700 so It’s fine. Then the next day I’d be back at it getting that account up to were I want. I’d also say the far majority of my matches were solo which is good. This meant that I wouldn’t have to rely on any friend to be online to play with and could just pick up the game and grind whenever I wanted to.
I believe the lowest I ever fell back then was 1700 on a huge loss streak. But I kept at it. Now I’m not the best, but certainly better than before. Before role queue I peaked about 3950-3970 on two different accounts. I peaked 4100 for tank for PTR role queue. And on live I’ve peaked 4k for tank, 4k for dps, and 3.9k for heals.
Also I never bothered to watch any tips videos or review my own vods. Though one time I had moxy review a vod for fun. Different things work for different people, but I’m throwing out my multi-account strategy (this isn’t really smurfing tbh) for anyone interested in a more unique approach.
So you didnt focus on anything? You just auto piloted to gm from silver? How many hours did you spend playing weekly ? How many total hours you have in OW? I guess it makes sense if you spent 6-8 hours a day for few months straight. But if you say 1-2 hours per day then gg…
