Grandmaster = <1%?

I’m listed in the top 98% of OW at 3800 and top 500 Zen main overall. It’s crazy to think the player base gets extremely tiny as you go up. There are times in the day I just can’t queue up especially in the morning where the wait times are long and you get matched up with platinums and diamonds.

Sometimes I wonder if it’s even worth it struggling to get to higher elos.

diamond & above is only 14% of the player base.

I used my data from overbuff.

i use the number from jeff.

I remember hearing(or seeing) this too. could I have a source please?

That would mean that Platinum and below only makes up 20% of the player base, which is almost the exact opposite of the truth.

Yea it sucks really bad to the point where I don’t even want to play at times. Constantly being hit with the “warning: long wait to fine fair match” sign if I don’t play in the afternoon or early nights.

slightly longer que times makes you wonder why you should strive for improvement ie a higher rank??

It depends: do you want to get challenged? Then try your hardest to rank up.
Do you want to have fun games? Stay in low elo and play with friends.

Couldn’t it actually be lower than 14%? Since of a lot of people in higher tiers have multiple accounts that they eventually get to diamond +?

Just to make it easier for those looking for sources-

Here’s the latest one:

Here’s the Season 3 one:

This is the case with every game.

What do you mean it’s crazy to think the player base gets tiny as you go up? Were you expecting half of the player base to be GM?

He is saying 80% of the player base is in low diamond and below.

Jeff Kaplan broke down the Competitive playerbase rank distribution back in February.

61% of the Comp playerbase is spread between Bronze-Gold. Grandmaster is around 1%. And when you question how many Master and Grandmaster accounts might be duplicate accounts for the same player, that 3% and 1% player pool is probably actually lower.

If you look at just Bronze-Plat, that is where a whopping 86% of the entire Competitive playerbase sits (and only 25% are even in Plat).

The base does, indeed, get very small as you go up.
