Dont expect high hopes for 6v6

Aaron: “Hey all. Still working on the 6v6 Director’s Take. It’s uhhh… going to be pretty long. Even longer than a [@jakeow] tweet! I’ll need a few more days of writing and about a week to localize it for all regions.”

Response: “The director take to break the internet is coming”

Aaron: "Not going to lie. I’m apprehensive this is going to cause people to go after each other, even more, over their preferred version of the game.

Open-minded dialogue over dogma."

It appears we are done for, 6v6 is probably not going to come back, pack it up guys its time to move to Marvel Rivals

They mentioned Jakeow who has been “shilling” for 5v5 forever it’s so over for 6v6 dreamers

Spoilers: he’s going to talk about why they had to move away from 2-2-2 and about the other 6v6 formats they tried internally (first 1-4-1 and then 1-3-2) and how they eventually decided to drop a Damage hero from 6v6 1-3-2 and settled on 5v5 1-2-2.

Single-Tank Overwatch 2 was basically locked-in from December 2019 because of queue times. The only thing they changed after that was the number of Support and Damage heroes on each team. Although testing with 1 Support didn’t last very long at all - I think only one playtest?

There aren’t enough Tank players for 2-2-2. There never was and there never will be.

Even aaron is aware of the consequences of 5v5, its kinda sad to watch any hope for 6v6 be gone forever, its near impossible to get people to hop on a custom 6v6 lobby bc not enough people know about it

Maybe - just maybe - there aren’t as many people interested in it as you’ve been led to believe?

Nah, that couldn’t be it surely.

I am more inclined to believe that its

  1. Not very widely known
  2. Since its relatively harder to set up games compared to having an actual matchmaking, its just too much effort for the average player

Sadly, I think you’re right. I hope you aren’t though, and that they’ll finally realize their error.

Everyone knows that 6v6 custom games exist.

I’ll grant you that it’s a little hard to organise them - you can’t really just start any sort of serious custom lobby and expect people to join via the game browser.

But there are pretty well-known discord servers for co-ordinating matches. Again, anyone interested in playing 6v6 games will be pretty well aware of this.

If you’re already doing all that but stll can’t find people to play 6v6 games? That really does indicate a lack of wider interest.

not really, i have met people in qp that say they want to play 6v6 and i have to tell them about it

esp brand new players who have never played OW1 or know about 6v6, thats a lot of players since the game went f2p

I think the best I can hope for is solid reasoning why they can’t do 6v6 and not a series of apologies like when PvE was announced to be canceled. That was pretty rough to read, but I’m glad they backed it up with some crazy effort.

I hope the team is more confident now, so they can at least give a satisfying answer to the 6v6 crowd and provide a sense of closure. The worst move would be lukewarm fluff followed by “it’s not happening” but I trust Aaron when he says he’s taking his time on the response, I’d like to believe he wants to handle this with respect for the players

I think they just need time to think up some BS that sounds plausible, honestly.

But aaron has sstated that the response is going to cause people to go after each other even more, so its more than likely its a sweeter way of saying “nuh uh, 6v6 isnt happening bc of (insert bogus reason)”

It doesn’t matter whether 6v6 comes back or not, whatever he posts in either direction is just going to enflame some % of the playerbase.

6v6 open queue replacing 5v5 open queue. All your arguments are gone.

it would be an interesting change, but i doubt they would implement that

I’m not arguing, I’m accurately predicting future events.

What counts as a bogus reason is also entirely subjective, and this is a hot button issue. I think what Aaron means is, there are very passionate players and creators who’ve had a lot of debate about this, and he’s worried having a “losing side” will cause players to act rudely and irrationally. To some unknown amount of players, for whatever reasons, nothing he could say is gonna be good enough and he doesn’t want anyone to get attacked for it

I’m ready for it to be yet another on-the-fence take where they talk about the advantages of 6v6 and blah blah blah… then at the very end explain why it’s not very easy to balance around and that was why it had to be removed

he can minimise the damage by just letting 6v6 happen, you give what half the players want and the other half are either fine with letting 5v5 and 6v6 coexist or shills that dont want 6v6 back in anyways bc they only remember the dying light of overwatch 1

My dream scenario is that open queue QP will get a 6v6 mode with the expectation that it won’t be balanced meticulously like the core mode

This opens the door for future changes/focus, if it performs well. If not, we have it around forever at least. But idk, I like 6v6 without RQ and 5v5 with it. Not sure how popular that take is or how feasible this would be for the team
