In order to be politically correct according to Blizzardâs code of conduct rules what-have-you since they locked the thread: Petition to make profiles public again
Please DISCUSS in this post your opinion on whether or not profiles should be made public again (at least in comp).
Yes, you shouldnât be squirmy about your stats or what you play in a competitive environment. Let every other mode allow you to be hidden if you so choose.
Discussion wise, i think Private profiles are great to an extent. I have a Mercy friend who got railed on because she plays a bunch of mercy. She could play other heroes too, but she mainly played mercy.
I do hate that they set the default to private. I also kind of wish that in comp games it would give at least a preview of a players preferred role, whether thats DPS, Tank, or Support. Maybe give time totals on each role, like what they do with heroes in career profile.
I think there have been enough threads like this to realize that the community has formed two camps.
The public profile camp believes that all profiles should be public, as they believe the information that can be gleaned from them is valuable and important when forming a team comp.
The private profile camp believes that players should have the choice to show/hide their profiles, as the community has shown time and time again that every scrap of information can be weaponized and used to harass and berate others.
Personally, Iâm in the private profile camp (despite having mine set to public). I believe players should have the choice, and I also believe that the information gleaned from profiles has very little practical use when forming team comps. 99.99% of the games I play, my teammates quickly pick the hero they want to play, and at that point the team either naturally arrives at a relatively balanced composition, or ends up with the usual â5 DPS/1 Zen QP specialâ. At that point, all you can do is ask your teammates if theyâre willing to make a change. Access to profiles does not strengthen these requests, good social skills do.
The urge to dismiss anyone who wants privacy options as being thin-skinned or willfully deceptive is incredibly disingenuous IMO, and is one of the least productive assertions you could make if youâre after a fair discussion of the issue. I hope this thread will be free of that sort of thing, but itâs probably just a matter of time if past threads are any indication.
Except the complaints about people dictating how others should play came from compâŚno one cares in qp/arcade
Ie: they changed it because of compâŚwhy would they go back to the state that caused enough problems that they were forced to change it in the first place?
I think its fair to say that every player in competitive does not want someone playing or trying out a hero in competitive when they have little to no time on that hero beforehand. Having the profiles public in competitive is a great quick and easy tool that allows 6 random players that get queueâd together as a team to assess quickly each others strengths and weaknesses, and adjust accordingly if need be.
Itâs the toxic players who take it to the extent of flaming that person who doesnât have as much time or as high of a win% on that role over another player, and thus conclude itâs the main reason for their loss etc
EDIT: I canât help myself but make the analogy of it and any real sport. MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL etc⌠How many of these team sports do they hide each individualâs statistics? In all fairness, overwatch is a competitive eSport, and with its popularity and growth, is being viewed more and more like ârealâ sports. So why must they change and cater to each playerâs feelings? Iâm not trying to sound harsh, but if it hurts your feelings for being called out that you never play so-and-so hero, then maybe competitive isnât for you. If you want it bad enough then (with all respect) go practice your butt in quickplay so that at least if you choose to go to comp with that hero, you have some merit and validation for choosing that hero.
For example - In any ârealâ sport, if every player âhidâ what position theyâve practiced/played, then the games would be a complete joke. Itâs even worse than PeeWee football or Little League baseball, because even those kids put in the practice at a certain position before playing in a real game.
Simply put, if you are competitive about Overwatch and view it on the same level as any other sport, then you need to oblige to the basic foundations of what makes a team successful.
But if you choose to view competitive overwatch like a pick-up 5v5 basketball game or softball/wiffle ball game, then please, by all means, play whatever position you feel like and have the most fun at.
lol when you start paying players like they do in real sports then maybe you get to tell them what to do.
The fact that folks like you are so upset over this makes it clear why it was important. The only reason you and a vocal minority are spazzing out is because itâs harder for you to harass players that donât do what you want.
blizzard only made profiles hidden so Jeff can keep all the stats to himself and people cannot pick apart the game. is cute that people think blizzard is trying to protect them from bullies or something. as Trogdor pointed out, that is not something that will ever change, unless blizzard forces private profiles for everyone.
Much like they made the reporting system to help protect them from bullies when in reality itâs just a clever way for Blizzard to make extra money because as a result, all the silenced players end up purchasing another copy
