Director's Take: Talking tanks and upcoming hero balance changes

How is the ‘tankiness’ metric broken down by rank. And how does that effect the balance? One of the issues I see with how you talk about hog for example is I guarantee you (and tbh its not even a hot take, this is just truth) the experience against hog is wayyyy different at mid to low elo vs upper elos where team play is critical and working together to overcome adversarial hero’s cooldowns isnt an insurmountable obstacle. Obviously thats just overwatch you can’t really change how that works because the game is just meant to be played like that. But when it comes to addressing the feel of a hero and the feel of playing against them, solely looking at a game-wide win rate or even expected death rate seem to be… lacking? So honestly just curious if there’s more to it than that.

You were saying sth along the line of Mei having a chilling proposition.

i dont know what kind of utopian view you have of high elo but everyone is garbage at the game at every elo because 5v5 caused the biggest elo inflation in competitive game history

How many people do you think would agree with you? 10 minutes is a long time to wait for a quickplay match.

the fact that everyone had health increases and Torb turret is still at 225 HP is pretty insane.

Turret needs to be reworked/buffed/ something, considering Torb is one of the only heroes in the game who doesn’t have any mobility/ability to go up/down levels.

Also, bring back moving platforms…

yep torb is a really bad character you know what youre talking about for sure

He’s been bad for quite some time. He’s just a noob stomper which inflates his win rate lol

how do you know what a characters winrate is if blizzard keeps all its statistics hidden

I remember them citing his winrate as one of the highest a few seasons ago. Which doesnt surprise me when taken into consideration all competitive levels. I’m not saying he needs a huge buff, he just needs to be reworked a bit. He’s lost his entire identity.

what do you mean hes lost his entire identity hes the exact same as he was in 6v6

he is by far the easiest brawl character that has long range capability because no projectile falloff and insane sustainability thanks to his overload, genuinely is the plug and play of dps characters

No non, Torb used to hand out armor, have a level 3 turret. They turned him into a brawler, which is fine, but his turret has almost nothing to do with any power in his kit, it’s just a “thing” now.

It’d be nice to see them transfer power from himself to his turret, have SOME sort of interaction with it. That is what i’m saying moreso than he needs a total rework. And im not saying make him easier, he’s just in an odd spot.

im actually advocating that he HIMSELF is nerfed slightly, and roll that power into the turret.

Oh yeah! It was said that a Wall of Mei came the north most part of the globe and formed the north pole.

No idea, but I and my friends have historically waited in long queues and never really complained too much.

But again, point being - “DPS players dont want 6v6” is very much a blanket statement with no backing to it. Truthfully I dont think I have a single friend who has said they preferred 5v5. Some were indifferent, but I dont think any of them said 5v5 was better.

Tanks don’t feel tanky? they’re broken with 25% headshot reduction ffs stop babying the role

Recent changes, like the headshot damage reduction on tanks, had some effect on this, but it’s still under where we’d like it to be.

okay I’m kind of scared how we’re this far in without a single mention of counterswapping

However, what we’re currently discussing is whether the path forward from here should be centered around broad, systemic changes, or per hero changes. We’re discussing limited versions of the former, for instance we’re looking at reduced versions of the Damage role passive. However, we’d like to do more of the latter

oh good we are actually focusing on the real issues now instead of adding 50 extra role passives

For example, one of the reasons Reinhardt ought to feel tanky is through his shield.

Yes. And one of the reasons D.va ought to feel tanky is through her matrix, but that doesn’t work when you can just field a full team of abilities that penetrate it. Same goes for all the tanks who lose all of their tanking for the next 5+ seconds the instant one stun touches them.

Increasing the health of Reinhardt’s shield

I hope we’re not just talking stat tweaks like this though. Usually my problem with playing rein is how quickly the enemies swap to turn the game into a pinball machine for me, not that my shield breaks too fast.

There are heroes that the community deems more ‘fair,’ or at least less frustrating, than others

It’s really simple, we hate tanks if they stun too often, we hate dps if they kill you before you can even know they’re there, and we hate support if they instantly bring someone from <50 hp to over 200

And Supports are relatively stable with Illari being the biggest mover, rising a few percentage points to 55%.

keep her there. Rather deal with pylons than suzus or antinades any day of the week

Until then, have an amazing Season 11

You too, Aaron (:

Overall they seem to be looking towards the right direction but the 0 mentions of the word “counter” or “swap” is still extremely concerning. I’ll wait we see the patch notes to celebrate or doomsay

I am not going to begin to even know how to fix the tanks. But come on, the game is in such a bad state and has been for a long time. I expected some meaningful changes to the game with the start of S11 and now you want me to buy skins till S12 starts before I see anything?

I get that stuff is really hard and its obvious that there is a lot of inner issues that are not being shared which are causing a lot of the issues, but please do something.

I am not some pro, with personalized solutions to the problems, but I expect there to be some changes each reason to address the issues, or at least spice up what people are playing season to season.

You are letting the game die for no reason. This is the worst state the game has been in for years and its still the best team shooter on the market. But come on, be better.

6v6 or bust.

I guess you’re planning to kill the rest of your player base when you still refuse to admit that you messed up next week. We all know what the better format is but if you say 5v5 is staying then the remaining players are going to drop this game immediately.

Please fix LifeWeaver and mercy. Everyone dogs on them bc they require so much effort for them to be good. It’s been so long

Please actually understand the issue. The issue is not we are not “tanky” the issue is for most of the game we cannot pick the tank we want to play and we spend most of our time under debuff or crowd control. Tanks are fine, its just everything you have done around tanking is out of control.
