Director’s Take – Looking Beyond Overwatch 2: Invasion

Me.

Overwatch 2 is fantastic. It’s not perfect but the core game is brilliant. Some small tweaks around monetisation (premium currency rewards for high engagement?) and plenty of new content in the future will be great. Well done Team 4.

If we can’t turn back the clock, then what can we do? We can keep adding to and improving Overwatch 2. That is how we move forward. This means more maps, heroes, game modes, missions, stories, events, cool cosmetics, and features - an ever-expanding, evolving, and improving game. This is the future of Overwatch. One where we will continually create and innovate on what is making the game great now for the players who are playing now.

True. Turn OW2 into the game that OW1 was supposed to be.

So I will bookmark this article and come back after season 7 has launched.

I am sure the developers won’t abandon OW2 like they did with OW1 for 3 years, right?..

You should educate yourself on what a review bomb is. It clearly is one. It’s just your opinion that it isn’t.

Illari is definitely overpowered though

Not Sojourn launch tier, but pretty close

somebody should tell Aaron to never write another dev post ever.
The amount of corporate speak and tip toe around issues is insane.
And the core players are the streamers i supposed?
Makes sense :skull:

Well, the people who oversaw that period have largely moved on, isn’t that good news for you? It takes a long time for a project of this size to change course, we are just starting to see the fruits of a lot of hard work. That of course is no guarantee that everything will be sunshine and rainbows in the future but…

My god if there was ever a statement showing just how incompetent you are at your job, here’s one. I mean I could grab a few from this alone, but holy hell you have no idea that flashpoint is in ranked???

For the record, most of the positive review are obvious troll.

True that. Lots of the reviews come from 0.2 hour players that install, play a match vs practice AI and then say “Paladins better, TF2 link, mature content creators put more effort in, PvE promises broken, price complaints, you took OW1 away from me I need a refund etc”. Most are review bombs, barely any of them are actual reviews.

Appreciate the comms as always.

I don’t have feedback from Flashpoint mainly because I play Quickplay or competitive, and Push is far more common than Flashpoint in Quickplay. So I don’t have a lot to offer other than some feedback on the maps:

  • New Junk City is wildly open and frustrating, while the other map (I can’t spell it off of memory lmao) is close. The open-ness of New Junk City is…frustrating.

One day I’d like you to address the horrendous monetization system. Cool cosmetics is great, when they don’t cost $15 for an epic-level skin lol.

But I appreciate the comms. I liked the PvE mission a lot. I find them very challenging, I love the shorts, but find they are falling a smidge flat just because there’s only 3 and the continuation is not there. Toronto was nice because there was so much hero variety that we could choose from (and love the story narrative based on who you pick). But Rio and Gothenburg feel stale because it’s the same 4 heroes no matter what.

I still think Illari’s primary needs buffs to DPS, and I’m perfectly fine if the beam needs to be more narrow to get those buffs. I don’t (in principle) mind a nerf to pylon or a nerf to ult charge rate (or stopping the bomb from ignoring shields, that’s okay too), but the ult already requires a lot of follow up from teammates to get high value out of, and there’s plenty of ways to deny it. So Ult damage should not go down IMO.

Flashpoint- too much walking between points and from spawns to point, especially considering the quicker tick rate for capture progression compared to Control. Maps feel super cluttered with geometry, which often makes things feel cramped. I don’t see why we shouldn’t have more useful, long sight lines given the size of these maps. Note that I’m not suggesting every single capture point needs to be that way.

We also launched on Steam last week, and, although being review-bombed isn’t a fun experience, it’s been great to see lots of new players jump into Overwatch 2 for the first time. Our goal with Overwatch 2 has been to make the game more accessible than ever for more people than ever before.

So there are tons of legitimate reviews(some aren’t of course) being posted there but none are being read and just classed as “review bombing” ok

This was more than likely written prior to it’s introduction in Ranked.

Lots of blabla and victim play, but the fact that OW2 is a straight downgrade from OW1 in almost every way and that this game was literally made to make even more money - out of pure greed - still stands.

This whole game revolves around the shop, getting cash from the whales, it’s only a shallow hull of what it used to be.

Aaron, please focus on improving AI in the PvE. Edit, minimizing the steam reviews saying it was a review bomb is like certain politicians calling things fake news. We all see what you’re trying to do. And it’s a bad look.

“Many of the reviews on Steam mention the cancellation of the much larger component of PvE that was announced in 2019 as one of their primary reasons for dissatisfaction with the game. I get that.”

On one hand I feel bad, because you can really tell this came from top down and he really wanted to deliver on that promised PvE experience. On the other hand, IF YOU ARE SEEING THIS MUCH NEGATIVE BACKLASH AND OUTCRY, THERE IS YOUR SIGN THAT CANCELLING THE HERO MISSIONS AND SKILL TREES WAS A MISTAKE!!! Whatever higher up needs to see that, show them the reviews. I don’t even care if it would’ve taken a few more years to deliver. I would’ve preferred they still just continue working on it.

Edit: For what it’s worth I actually love the game and genuinely enjoy playing every single day. I love the overwatch team and have a lot or respect for them (despite a lot of people probably scoffing at this), I just really think this wasn’t the right call in this one specific instance.

He knows when these posts go out so he would know it would be in ranked

Im sorry but lets take a look at the state of the game. Did Bobby kotic write this or are you just putting fluff as there was little actual content.

  1. Review bombs suck mostly due to china and pve. But whay did you expect. Youre bosses pushing out this business model all should be fired. Youre player base is upset for good reason and you arent doing anything to won back them. Its short sited and expressly disrespectful to the actual devs who deserve praise but no one cares about the or player just the stake holders. All in all yoi get review bombed because yournplayer base isnt happy and you as the director are not in control of the ship so its just going to keep crashing but just keep letting it crash into everything.

  2. Flashpoint why is the new mode not having an increase play rate. Do you not have tools to increase new maps or new modes to have increase match making? Or was thay dropped becaise battle pass more important. I havent even seen the map in qm yet.

  3. Illari fun hero. Kudos to devs who worked on her. And to any decision making people that have nothing to do with her. You suck.

  4. Shop you dont listen to player’s or care more about the bosses wan. Good games are player driven not business driven.

  5. Story missions. For all the talk about a new engine for years this is what we got ia a joke of content. Is it better than old archieves? Yes but barely. Why should be pay 60 to play wtih 3 friends for obviously stuff that was obviously juat a scrap book of content that want cloae to a full vision.

  6. Player achievement syautem. This is cool but why does it exist. Sure its cool to see the stats but it doesnt give anything like ow2 crdits to get stuff.

  7. Players time and value. Thia poat was disrespectful of players time for a load of nothing. Heck i can go play honkai star rail or genshin in the time it took to read this post get curreny to go to the gambling system. Just imagine actually being treared better by gambling game than ow2. Again ow2 disrespects playera time and only wants money. Every mobile f2p game gives you more ingame credit for time playes than ow2.

8 monetization. Its aweful you know this and we all know this recolor skins for full prize. Which are over prices as is. Lazy items like souvenirs and moat of this post are all garbage. But yoi as the director either dont care or arent fighting up and rolling over to be a caurcus fed to tje wolves. They dont care about arron bonby only cares about money.

  1. Devs health if you cares about the devs thay do all the work l why not let them do things that make them happy. Oh wait 9 week seasons. You need to fullfill a not easy to do quota to.get more momwy out of players to line bobbys pockets. But dont worry devs. Bobby has mike and aaron by the balls squeezing them to get more money out do you and players

  2. The most fun ive had in this game was prop hunt. Just make that for all mapa as a new game mode. Maybe you can win back some players by saying f the money do it for the players. Because you maoe momey when players are happy.

  3. Stop treating you player base and returning players like trash. Here are old skins for free that many of you have already have. Feels bad. But dont worry we wont give you any way to get new skins other than wallets or 6 months of grinding. Also some ow1 skins not there and emotes are locked

Click on those profiles, check their achievements how they got 100 of them at the first time they started the game on steam.

How did they get those achievements so fast? Hackers maybe?
