So I really would like to get more into Overwatch but most if not all of my friends play on PC. I own it for PC as well but I absolutely hate playing FPS games with the Keyboard and Mouse. I’m not here to debate endlessly about what is or isn’t better, but I instead wanted to ask if:
- Does anyone use a controller on PC and have some level of success/fun?
- What heroes don’t require the most precise aiming?
I would honestly just play on Xbox One if I was going to play solo, but I’d like to play with friends. Thanks for your help and advice!

The best one to play with controller is Junkrat, but no matter who you play it would be at a severe disadvantage on PC since controllers just don’t have the same input sensitivity/timing as keyboard and mouse do.

If you’re going to play with a controller on pc player heroes that don’t require aim. Junkrat, sym, Moira, bastion… I don’t recommend using a controller on pc. If you actually want to switch to pc learn kbm.

This exactly. Using a controller, you are pretty much guaranteed to lose, unfortunately. Reaction times just aren’t even in the same state, let alone ballpark.

It’s not really a question of “learning” per-say - I can play games with KBM on PC I just hate it with the passion of 1000 burning suns. I don’t usually play PC games outside of MMOs but this is a bit of an exception as it’s where the people I want to play with play. Thanks for the hero tips!

There’s no aim assist on PC so your aiming will be worse and your team will notice. Playing heroes that don’t require aim works alright unless you need to turn quickly, then you either have super fast sensitivity on analog sticks or slow turning and neither of those are that fun when trying to keep up with somebody using a keyboard/mouse

I use an XBox one pro controller instead of a keyboard, but I use a mouse for aiming. As a former console player it’s the best of both worlds. There are a few bugs when using the combined control scheme that cause a disadvantage to playing Zen and Hanzo (some of their abilities will randomly swap buttons !) . I also don’t have things like sprays and voice lines mapped, though I can still use the default ones through the communication menu.

i dont recamend useing a controller on PC. your input will be lacing. and you will in the long run be a hamper to your team due to the slower inputs.
if you want to play with a controller i sadly have to say. play on console.
we dont have aim assist on pc. like they do and again inputs for a controller are just to slow for PC gameing. its part of why people game on PC insted of consolles and why PC players beleave we are the master gameing race.
I think there are plenty of heroes out there that you can excel with without KBM. They are:
- Symetra
- Torbalurgoal
- Junkrat
- Rein
- Doomfist
- Lucio
- Phara
- Reaper
- Mei
- D.Va
- Brigitte (soon)
- Winston
I’d say that a little under half the heroes are very playable with a controller. Play the game in a way that makes it fun for you and don’t worry what other people say is “better”.
Edit: added winston

I play controller/mouse, Overwatch has special setting for that. I use an Xbox elite controller for Movement and abilities, but then the mouse for aiming. Just letting you know that’s an option.
Otherwise I see a few Phara’s and Lucio’s that are in masters with a controller. Rein, Winston, Dva, Junk, Possibly Doomfist, Mercy, and maybe Moira as well I can see all being possibilities.
I do the same thing but with a steam controller. It’s got an extra grip button in addition to the trigger and bumper which makes it a bit easier to map everything.
I really like that setup though, I find using a controller instead of keyboard to be much, much more comfortable.
As for just using a controller, I’ve tried it a few times and it works OK for Rein and Winston but having such a small hero pool will get frustrating pretty quick.
No offense to Surake; this is not true. People heavily exaggerate the level of skill it takes to play Junk on here…and he often needs to quickly pay attention to multiple flank routes.
OP, literally any hero that requires rapid turning or high levels of hitscan will put you at a disadvantage.
Now, this is heavily up for debate…but I’d say a few characters fit the bill for non-precise, not needing to react quickly to other angles…relative to others.
It’s not a question of skill but style
Orisa
D.Va
Reaper
Mei
Torb
Brigitte
Symmetra
Rein
Maybe Lucio
I got to 2950 on pc with my controller, on two accounts.
If you want to do it go ahead and do it, just go in with the mentality of having fun.
If you dedicate yourself to playing well with a controller you will find yourself messing around with settings a whole lot, I myself went through thousands of iterations, or at least it feels like it.
And if you want to get serious about it I would definitly consider a pro controller, in my case the “nacon revolution 2 pro controller”. It provides you with extra buttons on the back that are easily usable, and the software that comes along with it allows you to change the aiming curve in % for low, med and high movements + you can lower the deadzone from 2 to 0.
There is still a deadzone present ingame though that you can not adjust but it should help at least.
If you want to go another route though you could use the controller for movement and such and buy a gaming mouse with extra buttons to go hybrid. Am currently experimenting with that and aiming with a mouse is hella easy in comparison.
Edit:
Don’t limit yourself to characters that require little aim, play the heroes you like and you WILL get better.

Why would you deliberately handicap yourself? Everyone knows MKB is the premiere input device combination for shooters.

Hi OP! I’m also a weirdo that prefers using a controller at all costs; they feel way more natural to me, and I started playing Overwatch on PS4 so it’s the most familiar in that regard, too.
I use a PS4 controller and a program called DS4Windows; there isn’t lag BUT you will notice the difference as far as aim assist goes. It will be much harder to aim, and other players are going to have a mechanical advantage over you. So I do recommend trying to learn kbm. I have a few characters that I’ve learned kbm for, BUT I still play with a controller on certain characters:
- Ana
- Mercy
- Symmetra
- Torbjorn
- Moira
- Rainhardt
- Brigitte
Ana isn’t a “no aim” character, but the majority of her kit is not hitscan–and that’s the main noticeable difference, the hitscan characters. Basically any character where precise aim is super important.
Anyway, you do you, and don’t worry about the disadvantage–you should still be matched with people who are playing at your level, even if that means your level might be theoretically better if you used a kbm.

I don’t like playing with KB/M it’s uncomfortable and I don’t like it that’s it. No reason aside from that. I am not really concerned with the handicap as there is MMR and people of all skill levels playing I just made the topic to get advice from people who play or have played with a controller and what their experiences are.
I’m not arguing with anyone about what is or isn’t better that’s not the point of the topic at all.

I bet a lot of the people claiming to be KBM master race have never been outside of silver.

Rein is hilarious easy with a controller.
try using controller outside of silver. watch as you get shredded.
