Connection issues

For some reason I keep getting disconnected from overwatch servers randomly, i’m playing at around 30-40 ms consistently and then POOF, gone. This is the only game it happens to, starting to be a real pain. Been happening since blizzard shut down their servers temporarily.

You’ll need to collect a WinMTR capturing the disconnection and post it here for the community to assist you. The servers are not discontinuing service every 30-40 mins.

and how do I do that?

There is no WinMTR in that link, you mean DxDiag?

Please carefully re-read the entire post.

Connection, Installation, or Voice Chat problems include this as well:

Some WinMTR tests to the Overwatch server you’re playing on. If you can’t log into the game, you can use the generic overwatch login server IP for your region. Otherwise, run these tests while the problem is actively happening. If you catch a disconnection or latency issue with the test, it will make it easier for us to find the problem.

No idea what you’re talking about.

same here and now i cant even connect to OW

If you expand the link above, or read at the portion I have quoted, you will see it says “Some WinMTR tests to the Overwatch server you’re playing on.” There is a link for the WinMTR right there, in the post.

That would be a different problem, and you’d want to start your own thread with a looking glass test result.

Btw, this problem is linked to Wave Broadband again. I confirmed it since 4 of my teammates got simultaneously disconnected from the server at the same time while people on other ISPs haven’t.

Hey guys, here are the instructions for a WinMTR test.

WinMTR instructions:

  1. Download WinMTR from Download WinMTR-v092.zip (WinMTR) (Console players need a Windows Desktop Computer connected to the same network as their console to do this.)
  2. Unzip the WinMTR.zip file to the Desktop.
  3. Open the WinMTR folder and select the 32 or 64 bit version. Choose whichever one corresponds to your version of Windows.
  4. Run the WinMTR.exe
  5. Type the IP address you want to trace in the “Host” field. To get the correct IP you will actually need to open up the game and go Practice Vs AI or Quick Play and if you are on PC hit Ctrl+Shift+N and it will bring up the ingame network diagnostic graph, or go to Video > Options > Display Network Performance Graph if you are on any platform including Console. In the top left corner is the IP address you want to run WinMTR to.
    Network Graph
note When looking at the IP it will show up ingame as something like 12.34.56.78:12345. You will want to leave the last 5 digits and the colon at the end off and the IP you want to use is just the 12.34.56.78
  6. Once you notice the connection issue while playing, play for about 6 more minutes, minimize the game and click on “Stop”.
  7. Click on “Copy text to clipboard”, then return to this forum thread.
  8. Type two sets of four squiggly lines and then paste the contents of the WinMTR test between: ~~~~ Paste WinMTR Test Results Here ~~~~

If in the event you can’t even connect to Overwatch and get into any game mode at all, please use one of the following IP addresses based on your geographical region:

  • US West - 24.105.30.129
  • US Central - 24.105.62.129
  • Brazil - 54.207.107.12
  • Europe Netherlands - 185.60.114.159
  • Europe France - 185.60.112.157
  • Korea - 211.234.110.1
  • Taiwan - 203.66.81.98

BearSupply you have a 14% drop of your data transmitted in your router. This means something is going on with either your computer or your router/modem causing your issues. Have you worked through these troubleshooting steps yet?

I don’t think there is a data loss issue happening here. The first line shows 310 packets, but later in the test we see that 395 packets made it to Blizzard. Instead, this appears to be data masking, so I think we can disregard the loss. However, the more concerning piece of data is the response times on each node. The average latency between the home computer and the network equipment is 12ms, and this value should be less than 3-5ms. There are also some worst pings of 197ms to the home equipment. Starting with the worst ping of 197ms, it only builds as it moves through the ISP network before reaching Blizzard.

Are you playing on WiFi? Have you restarted everything on the network? Is this Virgin Media service a landline connection or hotspot connection?

Note: The two values I crossed out are Blizzard’s servers ignoring the test, so you can disregard because the 2.7k-4.8kms pings don’t appear on the last line.

Playing on ethernet and I believe its a landline connection.

Also I play on around 35ms consistently, the 190+ seemed to only happen for a second while running the test, currently doesn’t do this anymore.

So is the problem resolved now?

Probably not. It disconnects me randomly despite me having low ping. Doesn’t happen with any other game.

That doesn’t mean much usually, because every game you connect to uses a different route (they aren’t all hosted in the same building, city, etc.). I think the home equipment just has issues like we’ve mentioned. The other games you’re playing may have a higher tolerance for latency issues, or a lower tick rate.

It’s been fine until your servers were shut down.

Overwatch has a tick rate of 63hz, iv played games with less than that recently, for example insurgency servers. Also CSGO is 64hz but I never lose connection on there.

Look, you can’t compare to a different game because it takes a different connection route to a different datacenter. Your last WinMTR test is showing connection problems which does start at your connection and cascades through the test result. This either means there is something wrong with your computer or router or possibly with how your ISP is connecting to the server.
