Competitive needs backfill now more than ever

With the advent of 5v5 backfill in Competitve is needed now more than ever.

If you end up 4v5 it will be an absolute miracle if you manage to win, especially if you’ve lost a Support or, even worse, your one and only tank.

Come on, Blizzard. Now’s the time. Ensure that Competitive matches remain fair and balanced in this new Overwatch 2 5v5 landscape by adding backfill to Competitive.

valid request. however only after the 2min time expires.

No. Immediately when someone leaves a replacement needs to be found. Heck, pause the game if need be.

Every second that a team is left with a player (or more) down means the game is no longer the fair and balanced match-up that it’s intended to be.

This wouldn’t be fair to the person backfilling, as theyd always be backfilling into both an ult economy and a tempo disadvantage

Thats fine in QP but not with rank on the line

Hard pass for me

I’d be in favor of adding a way to queue specifically into backfill games and have the result not affect the backfillers rank at all. It’s would be a way to play a serious game with less risk involved.

i disagree. half the time players rejoin. if it went the way that you see it, then your carry could disconnect. then immediately backfilled with an ineffective. facilitating automatic defeat. preserving the 2min courtesy, is an
acceptable and reasonable grace period.

if they backfill. no loss of rank if loss

Playing a game with 4 random people already does that just fine on it’s own. I’d rather have a teammate.

I mean I could see it as an option. Like you could opt in for backfills in comp.

Generally I doubt anyone would like to be backfilled into a comp match so probably the person backfilling should be immune to losing MMR in case of a loss or something like that.

What if backfilling was an opt-in only; Like having your profile open?

Precisely zero people would opt in.

I doubt I’m the only player that enjoys backfilling. Also, having a low chance at getting a backfill is better than no chance at all, imo.

only between rounds. too much ult economy and macro delta if backfill happens mid-match. someone d/c? take the loss on that round and bring someone in for next round to stand some kind of chance.

but what are you going to bribe these people with? the system is already garbage. they can’t buy anything anyway and the queues are already a looming nightmare.

so rather than player rejoining within 2mins, take the loss on that round? rounds are like anywhere from 5 to 10 mins. brief departure won’t necessarily automatically mean round loss. backfill only if no rejoin occurs within 2min grace period. bribe? if user has backfill enabled at queue menu, if ever implemented, that would allow for potential insta queue. if match was half over, then i suppose half the sr, but nothing less than half. if match has somewhat just begun, then full sr obviously. keep it simple.

So a backfill option should be easy to implement just tick a box at the bottom under your role or all roles.

I do think there needs to be some protection either a 50% internal MMR loss reduction (so e.g if you don’t backfill you lose 30 for a game loss as a backfill you only lose 15)

Maybe incentivise it with extra BP XP or heaven forbid a 10 -25 coin reward if blizz can pull their hands out.

Not everyone WANTS to backfill but it can be a way of also skipping the queues and playing more games if you opt to do it!

This should only happen after the 2 minute timer has been allowed to degrade though.

what we need is loss forgiveness, so if a team mate leaves that match does not count as a loss for the team affected by a leaver

That and maybe another idea is fill the slot up with a bot perhaps extreme/lethal level. It may not be as good as say a player but at the upper bot levels they can be pretty spicy to play against.

Incorrect.

I’d opt-in without a second thought.

I’ve been on the short end of the leaver stick too many times. I know what it feels like. So if I could do something to help prevent others feeling that same way then I’d absolutely choose to help.
