Are you saying you’re no longer in control to delete files in your PC/laptop drive by going into the replay directory, right click and delete it without permission from Blizz?, that seems unreal to me.

yep thats happening you need perms

Wait. Not that I am fully savvy with all the tech terms and all that, but isn’t that related to your Windows setting? From what I understand from what you said, that has nothing to do with Blizz setting. Just click yes. It’s not something important nor dangerous as you’re thinking. You just made your Windows user setting more protective or whatever the correct phrase is, hence it’s asking you that.

Yeah it’s asking for my computer’s/owner permission to delete my files. Did we just get a virus?

I recommend reading up how Windows/MacOS operates. It sounds like you have bad file permissions set on the appropriate documents folder.

What seems to have happened is the Heroes of the Storm documents folder has had its permissions changed for some reason. It no longer has all the permissions enabled that it should. Specifically despite being in your account’s documents folder, your account does not have full permission over the folder. Additionally no user is set to have “full control” over the folder, even the administrator does not, which is likely why people cannot delete the files in it.

Logically the solution is to use administrator to change the permissions of the folder, and add back your user account with full control. Documents folders should always have full control enabled for the user who owns them.

I think what has happened is that for some reason they explicitly enabled read and write permission for the Heroes of the Storm folder, but in doing so overwrote all parent inherited permissions such as full control for the corresponding user. This has left the permissions broken since not even administrators have full control over the folder (unless they force it).

It is possible that this might have been caused by some fixes/improvements aimed at modern operating systems like new versions of MacOS and Windows 11. It would make sense to disable execute permission from the Heroes of the Storm documents folder as that folder should not contain any program files anyway (extra security). However it seems to have modified the permissions such that the files cannot be trivially deleted anymore, which is not good practice for user document files.

I am in the habit of renaming my replays according to a specific format. I can no longer do so, nor can I delete files – whether through HotS or directly in Windows. I have not changed anything, so either Windows or Heroes did. I noticed that since November 11, each replay file is accompanied by a .StormReplay.writeCacheBackup file. So I’m thinking that something changed on the Heroes end.

I checked the permissions of the Documents directory. They were correct (i.e., I am listed under ‘Group or user names’). Then I checked the Documents\Heroes of the Storm directory. I was not listed, even though I am the owner. After adding myself with full permissions, I was able to rename and delete replays.

I’m having the same issues. I have also noticed it indicates I have a faster ping to Brazil and the EU than I do the the NA server. I tested it, of course it’s incorrect. We should probably post this in Technical Support if it hasn’t already been.

I just tried it on mine, can’t delete and I need admin access which I didn’t need before.

Anyways to fix it:
Right click the replay folder > properties > security tab > edit > select “administration” > check ‘full control’ under allow column > apply > ok

Yea that helped a lot. Now all my replays are finally gone.

Thank you for this. Could you tell me the path from further back from the beginning? I just want to make sure I found the correct replays folder.

Documents/Hots/Accounts/A folder with losts of numbers/2-Hero/Replays

And then right click replay folder and make sure everything is on full acces.

I like you.

Interesting: for some reason, this solution did not work for me. I had to add myself to the ‘Group or user names’ section of the security tab.

It worked for me one time then when I wanted to play the game again all settings was reversed back to read only again. Think I will just let it stay like that since I have no time to modifie admin promissions everytime I want to play.

While this may have been a mistake on their side, I personally don’t think it was. It was puposeful imo.
This is what we get for life as a service. Our machines are not ours. It is only a shell for them to put wtfever they want there, and say ‘you agreed’ so enjoy.
