i have never seen a more out of touch grindy experience for new players in any moba, this is the biggest turn off for me, i played this game up until reaching level 15 (which is absolutely nothing and i did it in 2 days) and i barely got to 2k+ gold, i thought you’d get 3 quests everyday but you get one instead, making it 300 gold per day, i also currently have a boost that enhances my XP and gold gained and it still doesn’t feel fair, why is it this hard for new players to unlock new heroes? im pretty sure league proved this as a flawed system long ago, people will spend money on a game they like after they get comfortable with it, i’m not saying to have the whole cast unlocked but seriously, i don’t even know how long i’d have to play without the boost to normally unlock a legendary hero, it’s such a throw off for me personally because i feel like playing hots right now as a beginner isn’t about having fun or learning the game, it’s about getting enough gold to possibly unlock a hero that i’d like, and even then i don’t have any guarantee on how long that would take.
This is probably the biggest reason why this game isn’t doing too well, i have my fair share of experience with free to play games and i have spent my good chunk of money on cosmetics, i would spend money here too, the only thing that is gatekeeping me from doing so is that essentially i don’t even know if i like the game yet, i havent experience it to its full potential, rather than that, i have this huge flight of stairs to climb first to find my playstyle.
If you’re really new with the two boosts provided you can easily buy all the 2k heroes and 4k heroes just by playing a few games every day and doing the daily quests.
They should probably downgrade some of the 10k heroes by now. They used to drop hero prices on a monthly basis when the game was maintained regularly.
Now maybe half the roster is 10k and that’s a bit oppressive for new players.
After 2018 and Chen’s drop from 10k to 7k, they haven’t lowered the price of any hero (except new releases from 15k to 10k which is standard, except for DW)
And 2020 hasn’t had a single price drop, a first for HotS.
OMG… how terrible for you to have to either 1) pay for something, or 2) earn what you want…
If you don’t like the free characters you get to play each week, leveling them to 5 for the free gold and experience to test them, how will you even know if you like the game or not?
im merely pointing out how much of a downer it is for newer player to get into the game, and it honestly doesn’t surprise me the state of the game considering how bad it is for new players, also, why in the hell would i ever have to pay for characters? this is a free to play we’re talking about, if your monetization is revolved around having new players pay for the characters they want to play, well good luck building a community that way.
Yeah good luck. See that failure that is league of legends? Clealy failed because they do exactly the same hots does.
I think it’s okay they leave high skil cap heroes such as Zeratal at 10k. If you’re really a new player they have almost half the roster at 2k and 4k, with daily quests 500 gold at level 5 and free rotation and boosts, it’s not hard to farm your favorite heroes even those that are 10k.
but it’s wrong, and if you level a new account you’ll have enough ingame currency to get which character you want + many more, as opposed to hots, also it’s not even comparable, league is way more f2p friendly than hots is and it’s not even up to debate.
While no one will disagree on lowering the price of most 10k heroes, i disagree that they get so low any pleb can FTP them all in 2 days either.
Smurfs are already bad enough.
Another idea what i said once in the past
I got this answer: you are an idiot. in a very long text.
advice i got from elsewhere:
if you make multiple account , then you can play out the system. gl kiddo.
you could earn extra gold by leveling up free rotation hero to lv 5. Also, don’t buy or reroll any loot box.
that is a flawed mentality, if someone wants to smurf, they will get around this anyways, secondly how could making the game more f2p friendly be a net negative of any sort? the game is already dead as it is, taking stances to be more friendly to newer players can only bring in new players, smurfs are a problem of any game, and regardless of how bad it is you just have to deal with it.
I would agree if new players faced new players in the game and if new players went to bronze 5 elo .
Untortunately new player can be matched with anyone and have gold MMR.
If i have to suffer some new player at least let him grind a hero to be less incompetent with it before ruining games with another one.
Also the more you give more freebies the more unreasonnable people wanting freebies become.
Once again i am not against making never heroes more accessible but i am.not going to bow to newbs and afkers toxics because “daed game you need us”.
I want to give you an arm, not the whole body.
I agree that the game should be more welcoming to new players. The devs should give out big heroes bundles for a limited time (for free) like they did with HotS 2.0 in the future when they make a big event (like a cross-over with other Blizzard games). In case you don’t know: Back in 2.0, the game offered 4 Mega bundles that you can buy (for XYZ amount of gems, but it is free because the game also gave you that XYZ amount of gems; you can only buy 1 of the 4 bundles) . Every bundle gave you 20 heroes for free. The bundles were divided into heroes’ playstyles/roles: https://www.neogaf.com/threads/heroes-of-the-storm-receive-free-mega-bundle-20-heroes-for-logging-on-next-week.1362359/
However, I do not agree that the game is the least F2P of all MOBA games. Since the 2.0 update that introduced the loot chests system, HotS is the most F2P MOBA game imo. You can get loot chests very easily by leveling up heroes because you’re a new player (so the XP required to level up a hero that you haven’t played is low). And loot chests can give you boosts, heroes, and cosmetics (including great skins), so they can give you literally almost everything. A lot of players complained and are complaining that the game is TOO F2P with the loot chest system, they said that: “Since loot chests can give skins for free, why bother spending money on the game to buy skins that other players can get for free?”. They want to be special, they want to feel that they’re better than the ones that don’t spend money on the game.
In conclusion, while I agree that the game should give new players more stuffs, I believe that HotS is already a great F2P game as you can get everything only by playing the game.
My tips are:
- You should level up heroes to level 5, 10, 15, 20, 25,… because you will get 500 golds when a hero hits those levels.
- You should play with other players (create a party) to get the XP boost (so you can level up heroes more easily) and extra Golds.
- And there are 2 quests that give a lot of golds: “Play 8 games” that give you 800 golds and “Win 3 games” that give you 600 golds, you can complete these quests really fast in (Co.op) Versus A.I mode. And you can play the game every 3 days and complete all 3 quests in that day (since the game still gives you quests for your offline days; maximum 3 quests though).
Finally, I hope that you’re enjoying your stay in the Nexus! Good luck, Have fun! (And stay safe!)
Is it?
You get 500 gold for every hero you get to 5. You also get gold every 5 levels on the hero, but let’s focus on the level 5 first. You said you have a boost, which means you just need around 5-7 games with a hero (sometimes not even that) to get them to 5.
There is around 14 heroes on free rotation every week. 14 x 500 = 7k gold every week just from the free rotation heroes.
You also have the quests every day, which will give you 200-800 gold depending on which one you get. If you get only de 200 one, you still make 1400 in a week, but you definitely get the other ones as well, so you can make 2k-3k a week with quests.
You also get gold after each game, and with a boost you get around 50-75 if I remember correctly. So, to get the heroes to level 5 and doing the quests every week, you will have played around 7 games for each level 5 hero, 14 x 7 = 98 matches. Let’s make it 100 to make it simple. For the quests, you usually have to play 3 games for each of them, so that means 7 quests a week x 3 games = 21 games. Let’s make it 20 games. So, from just playing the game alone you make (100 + 20) x 50-75 = 6k to 9k gold.
So, 7k + 3k + 9k = 19k. Basically 20k, which means in 1 week you can buy 10 heroes that cost 2k.
I’ve been playing league for a couple weeks now and I only got a few champs.
Edited: I forgot to say that in the begining it is VERY easy to get new heroes in lootboxes. About 20-30% of the heroes I have came from lootboxes.
Well, err, i don’t disagree with your post and you actually showed me a really cool thing they did 3 years ago which i am delighted to hear, i also have to recognize that the loot system itself is really nice (although i’d argue that it NEEDS to be this way in 2020) but that is where the good part ends, calling it “too f2p” today is just out of touch, take league, which is the obvious comparison, now you could say that getting skins in hots is easier on which i wouldn’t disagree but that’s not the main subject, the main subject is heroes, you can’t argue that in this aspect hots is very punishing, like if you get a 10k hero it takes you a long time, and at what cost? by the time you get a 10k hero on hots you’d already have 2+ on league (6300 BE champs) not to mention that since this game isn’t really supported that much anymore by blizzard it can’t even benefit from events which are a big part of league’s f2p friendly system, now, i don’t want it to be a hots vs league argument but the juice of the matter is that this game is REALLY dated when it comes to that, say i get to unlock that 10k character after a lot of struggle as a new player, now i’m there, i play a few games and suddenly i realize i don’t really like it that much anymore, it’s not like it was a walk in the park to unlock it you know? (league also gives 3 refund + a new one every year which i’m not aware if hots does this)
You have the free rotation heroes that you can play and try before buying them.
If you could make enough gold to buy a hero per day. They would lose what little money they make ,and the game would shut down. it is a free game.
Also, note that the more expensive heroes are not better than cheaper ones. Raynor is one of the best assassins in the game, and is also the cheapest.
If you’re learning and having fun, you shouldn’t care about unlocking heroes until you know exactly which playstyle you like, and which hero you want.
EVERYTHING in this game can be gotten for free. I don’t see how it is worse than any F2P. It’s more generous than most.
If you don’t yet know which heroes you want. It shouldn’t matter that you don’t have enough for a 10k hero. I find gold stacks up quickly enough. Just have fun in the meantime.
Because you’re not willing to wait?
Dude you just waste your time. This thing was mentoined a lot of time alredy.
Simply use the next method:
You create 3 account.
-Every 3. day you play with one (so you can make 3 daily quest at once)
-play beginner ai mode (they try to do some kind of speedrunning stuff. my record was 2 minute 7 sec. In the latest 365 day was 2 minute 31 second. You possibly will finish them under 8 minute.)
-Do not buy firstily 2-4k heroes, because there is a higher possibility to get them from lootboxes.
-Play heroes only until lvl 5 and you get 500 gold.
i’m sorry but with this tricks you will spend still a ridicoulisly big amount of time.
gl hf man.
I feel you, in the past, I bought some heroes that I wanted to play, but ended up not playing them so much.
And this might be a good solution for those situations. I believe that LoL doesn’t have Try Mode, right? So maybe buying a hero/skin is more ‘punishing’ in HotS because you can try them out yourself in Try Mode or when the hero is on Weekly Rotation.
This guy’s got it right-- it’s a matter of catching old policy up.
A lot of older releases can probably at least hit 7k, if not 4.
I also don’t see what’s wrong with a little more accessibility, especially considering how kind they’ve been about what shards can purchase.
