I’m not big on Bliz lore so is anyone willing to do a run down on:
- Who this is?
- What game?
- Most likely role and abilities
First glace it looks like a WoW monstrosity

He is a Dreadlord (Demon) from Warcraft. He is the one who fought and led Arthas in Northrend where he got Frostmourn, became a Deathknight, killed Mal’Ganis and ultimately became the Lich King.
He most likely will be a tanky assassin with life leach and debuffs in his kit.
Hes a pretty cool warlock card in hearthstone that sees play in wild. Krul, control and cube warlock all use him because of his two powerful effects. Your other demons gain +2/+2 and your hero is immune, maybe this could hint to his role as a utility hero? who knows.
After his release in hearthstone they decided to add him to the hearthstone inspired series, warcraft where he help create the lich king.
Mal’Ganis is a Dreadlord from the Warcraft universe.
Dreadlords are a race of demons originally called the Nathrezim, a cunning and manipulative race of demons.
Mal’Ganis is a pretty 1 note character with his only impact made to the lore being the Dreadlord that turned the Human kingdoms of Lorderon into the Undead Scourge, taunted Arthas causing him to purge Stratholm where he would hunt down Mal’Ganis to the reaches of Northrend, take up the cursed blade Frostmourne to strike down Mal’Ganis and begin his journey into the Lich King.
Because of how Demon lore works no demon can ever truly die, instead their souls are bound to an alternate dimension called the Twisting Nether, when defeated they are banished back to the Twisting Nether where they rebuild their bodies before returning to the world. Unless killed inside the Twisting Nether a demon can never truly die.
Mal’Ganis would return later on in World of Warcraft during the Wrath of the Lich King expansion in the Icecrown zone where he was revealed to have infiltrated the Scarlet Crusade, now calling themselves the Scarlet Onslaught which is an infinitely more insane religious cult. Defeated again he was banished and wouldn’t make an appearance until World of Warcraft: Legion when Gul’Dan used a plethora of Demon commanders to destroy the morale of the forces seeking to defeat him, among these was Mal’Ganis but he has not been seen since so is still alive in the current lore as of this posting.
so assassin or tank?
Assassin/Bruiser (or with a lot of self sustain).
Probably he will be using his own HP as skill cost but this is a wild speculation of mine.
He’s an assassin until we get our new fleshed out role system at blizzcon.
Specialist and multiclass are being removed
I doubt he’s a warrior since dreadlords despite their stature are not really frontline fighters. He’ll most likely be a melee mage similar to heroes like Kerrigan alarak or maiev Qbuild thrall.
A trashy dreadlord. Don’t know why they picked MalGanis over other dreadlords.
They had 3 choices: Mal’Ganis, Tichondrius and Varimathras.
They have connections with, respectively, Arthas, Illidan and Sylvanas. Varimathras might be the most known to WoW players as he had a place in the Undercity until WotLK and then re-appeared in Legion. Tichondrius is the Dreadlord who was killed by Illidan when he used the skull of Gul’dan. Mal’Ganis though is the one who set in motion one of the major arcs of Warcraft and is still rather well known (on the contrary of Tich).
Support. Dread Lords in WC3 had Vampiric Aura (allowing other units to heal), Sleep, and a Summon. That puts me more in mind of support than anything else.
I just want to thank Blizzard from the bottom of my rotten heart for this. I love you guys, would you marry me?
?
why isnt Arthas support then? he has unholy aura in w3
or KTZ support? he has frost armor
I am glad we are getting a dread lord. I have always hoped that they would get around to having all the warcraft 3 hero units in game, and this is a step further in my dream. Now all that is left are:
Cairne
Sen’jin or vol’jin
manoroth
lady vash
Goblin alchemist
Akama
Though I mainly look forward to starcraft/diablo releases since they seem so rare.
I completely forgot about the goblin alchemist, he was such a strange hero to use.
He had the ult that 1 hit KO’s any unit and turned them into gold for you, right?
Mal’Ganis could work as a support because it’s Vampiric Aura, letting the team heal off their damage. However, this would vastly more likely be akin to Tyriel’s shields, where it’s incidental sustain for the team. Having it heal nearby Minions could cause him to fit the Specialist slot until the role rework (provided he gets Carrion Swarm to clear the lane), as he’d be able to immensely imbalance lanes and get another several tower shots out of his minion wave.
…Why I’m focusing on the possibility of Mal’Ganis as essentially an alt-Abathur is beyond me. Like, a corpse-possessing Heroic to take a freshly-killed enemy (possibly requiring you to hunt their ragdoll) would open up some astonishingly stupid drafts. Then again, a largely-auto-attack comp with Tyriel, Tassadar and Mal’ganis for sustain, passing up a true main healer, would be nice to see, just for the novelty of it.
Arthas could have been, but I think they wanted more of his WoW mechanics in his kit. Likewise Kel’thuzad. Mal’ganis I’d expect more to be a straight transplant of a WC3 Dread Lord, since I don’t think he had quite the same traction in WoW as the other two.
Warrior. He’s up on the hero page
edit: Hero spotlight Mal'Ganis im Rampenlicht (Deutsche Untertitel) - YouTube the text is in German, but the video is in English.
with your logic every paladin should be support coz every paladin has auras
every wow class gives something to allies lol lets make everyone support
malganis support would be the stupidest thing in world
…That’s how the high-level professionals in WC3 (such as they exist) use Dreadlords. If they want a tank, they go Crypt Lord. If they want raw damage, they go for Death Knight. Lich is for CC. Dreadlord is where they go for sustaining their armies, much like grabbing Shadow Hunter, holder of Chain Healing, works for Orcs. Of course, in practice, everyone just gets Goblin Alchemist from the Tavern.
As shown with Auriel, a support can have their healing tied to their allies’ actions and work quite well. As shown with Lucio, a support can have their healing be largely weak and still be quite useful. If he needs someone else to handle burst, more work for Tassadar. If his primary supporting contribution is CC, that fits him perfectly.
Ummm . . . Paladins in WC3 Healed, gave Armor, turned invulnerable, and resurrected troops. Why wouldn’t they be a support?
As it turns out, the design team decided to look at Mal’ganis from WoW perspective more than a WC3 one, anyway, so the question is moot.
