When is cleanse a mustpick?

Recently played a game in high plat where a teammate got mad at my uther play bc i picked 50 armor on rooted enemies instead of cleanse. The rage was ironic bc he was a horrid player but in his defense my healer was pretty bad that game. I understand that cleanse is a good talent but even with cdr to 30 seconds i don’t see how its useful in lower leagues. Its not like fights are very fast and that one save is not going to turn a teamfight when the entire team gets rooted/stunned (grouping is more common). My reaction time is also not fantadtic (which is why i play in plat) so on my end it rarely saves someone unless its a very predictable cleanse like chromie or an arthas root. So imo bc im not fast enough and dont know when to use it effectively and ny team is not skilled enough to avoid grouping/dodge more shots its a bad talent choice when i can also ensure they take half dmg every time they get cc’d. Thoughts?

A must: Against Octograb; Any enemy with Roots or long stuns; Against ETC; Against a Diablo; Anubarak;

Optional: Against slows or displacement;

Advice: If you can’t apply cleanse in time, or not make clutch saves/plays with it I’d rather have you pick something else as a Uther in my team

Every game, if you don’t pick it and use it right then you’re not playing Uther right at all and you should stop lowering his overall win rate asap.

Except if the enemy team doesn’t have a lot of CC, you won’t get much value out of a cleanse. It’s the best tool against CC chains, but if all they have is a single stun and maybe a root or some slows, you don’t need it. Uther’s lvl 7 tier is highly competitive. Even if the enemy team has a lot of CC, it might be more beneficial for you to pick Armor of Faith. Especially with a Q build.

Uther is also picked a lot in double support comps with him acting as the off tank, so chances are your other healer will have a cleanse or soft cleanse available. He also has divine shield just 3 levels after, which is objectively the best form of a cleanse in the game.

Cleanse is pretty much always better than that armor talent, which makes you hold your spells until the cc is applied which isn’t beneficial since you have high cd’s.

Ofc there are some niche situations for it like if you are second healer but even then I find Q build to be superior.

I have to say it also depends on your elo.

Against Butcher and chromie is perfect to take cleanse, because you counters someones ult. But if you are around gold. Just take the more healing

Honestly don’t be too scared of picking cleanse even if you aren’t able to time it correctly or use it pre-preemptively as it still has value in removing existing CC applied to your allies which can help them to escape for most part. Learning the timing is something you’ll develop along the way from using the talent / skill, and you’re not going to learn it by purposely avoiding it.

That said, picking it in general is honestly dependent on the presence of CC, especially the sort of tank you’re facing. Honestly as long as you know the enemy has some sort of CC that stuns/sleeps/roots I would pick it up because that often will make a huge difference. If they are mostly just slows or silences I would look into my own team composition to see if they are tanky enough or have sustain/survival tools if they have adequate survival options then the slow won’t be such a big deal that I can choose other options. But for stuns/sleeps/roots always pick up a cleanse as it becomes key in breaking the enemy combos, as often these become the enemy team’s primary form of engage so its best to dispel this to prevent them from building momentum.

As for the rest just practice really cleanse is a tool that is simple but has a lot of depth that you simply need to learn along the way, especially the timing.

It depends on what your opponent has and what you want to choose on level 10.
If you are a bad player and you think that you can not use cleans, it’s good that you have chosen something different, but do not be surprised that others will blame you. This is a team game and I require some knowledge and skills from my allies.

Platinum is a rank with a very mixed level of players’ skills. Even if you use the cleans well, it is not known if the allies will benefit.
Can you give the composition of both teams?

Cleanse is a “must pick” if you want to win.

Also if your team isnt dumb.

Cleanse is a must pick if they have a comp designed to stun-lock one target, however it’s also great against Heroes that uses CC naturally as part of their playstyle.

Kel’thuzad being one of them and Murky Octo-grab. If in Quick Match or you happen to face a Butcher in Storm League, take Cleanse, chances of them taking Furnace Blast is small compared to Lamb to the Slaughter.

You pick it when you know for which ability you need it. So look at the enemy team and think about what kind of abilities they have - sometimes you can even wait until the enemy team has picked their lvl10 heroics before you pick your lvl7.
If you just pick it and without any ability (that you want to counter) in mind then you will automatically be less ready/not fast enough to use it.
If you know you want to use it to counter murky then you will automatically be more prepared, like you almost anticipate when the octograb will be used and therefore you can be very quick with your reaction.

It’s obviously a useless talent if you can’t use it properly, therefore it’s not a shame if you don’t pick it. There are many non-optimal talent builds in the game that are basically better in the hands of bad players - they help bad players to be more effective compared to some builds that high ranked players use.

Cleanse is not a must pick every game (especially if the enemy team didn’t draft that much CC, but it does change the game if you are good at landing them.

What makes the real difference here is if you are good at pre cleansing stuff. If you can pre cleanse a hook for example, it will definitely save that hero, and you know how people get hooked all the time in lower ranks.

Cleanse is also not just for when a big fight happens. If you can cleanse someone and it blocks the enemy engage on someone before an objective, it can really change the game for your team.

I’d say pick it every game because cleanse is just that good, but it’s not a “must pick”. Gotta know if the other talent will get you more value. In that Uther situation, sometimes armor will be better, sometimes cleanse will be better than giving them 50 armor and they dying anyway because they couldn’t move.

Utility is King, why do you think Piano Uther was beast a long time ago? It would be King today too if it was still around.

Cleanse allows you to save Divine Shield for a better moment, simple as that.

I would say about 99% of the time its a must pick.

But… in your case as Uther, the armor helps alot. If you were rehgar and said this, because you went blood and thunder, I would be like come on man!!

Uther is the only hero I would say might be an exception. Giving teammates armor is great, same with receiving a C/D bonus for you being CC’d.

Plus uther has divine shield where you could use that.

on most heroes with a cleanse it is almost always the best option.

Don’t not pick it just because it takes some practice to use right. You’ll never get it right if you don’t even try

While i agree cleanse is great i aint sure it beats 50 armor. I know that vs alarak that armor is way better(you aint casting cleanse to negate pull, too fast) and giving a silenced target 50 armor will often save em.

Vs butch lamb and Loop its a given. But uther tier 3 is quite strong.

Also dont forget one thing. 50 armor means that target can eat a lot of skills depleting enemy dmg.

For other healers like lili its a ez choice. But uther has quite good talents to compete.

It beats 50 armour for sure, why try to further negate damage in a conditional situation when you can deny your enemy from dealing it with Cleanse?

If you keep your heals only until an ally is CC’ed (for just an extra 25 armour) then either I don’t want you playing him on my team or I’ll instalock him.

Cleanse can not prevent anydamage unless the target is already in the very favourable position to be able to get away essentially instantly were it not for the CC. It does nothiong agaist bodyblock, damage already on the way or being closed in by structures; armor does. It is also up way more foten than cleanse with it´s ridicoulous cooldown.
