When do you stand still?

Generally speaking, MOBAs are all about constant movement. Most of the time, there’s something you should be doing, so ya gotta hoof it to wherever that something is.

When we’re attacking, we’re predisposed to moving with the thing we’re attacking to deal as much damage as possible (“stutter-stepping” as them tharr sophisticated folks like to call it), all the while making sure not to chase your target too far (ya’ll wouldn’t wanna “overextend” now, would’ja?).

We also do this when taking a camp. The siege camps have telegraphed attacks, so we move around them while trying not to slow down our own attacks. Bruiser camps may auto-hit you, but we try to minimize how many of the 4 bruisers are able to attack us at once by skittering about to get them jammed up on each other.

At times, we’ll do this even when attacking regular lane minions or structures, because we don’t want to make ourselves an easy potential gank or we want to better position ourselves in accordance to the ever-changing flow of battle. A healthy paranoia/awareness, as it were.

So this “MOBA presumption” is that “you’re always moving if you can help it”, but what I really want to know is:

Have you ever stood still on purpose, and if so, why?

…For me, the only situation I can think of where I’ve deliberately stood still is when I’m not in a fight, and it’s painfully obvious that Ana is trying to heal me.

Here’s some examples of stuff I’m *not* talking about:

-Typing: Usually, people don’t move while they’re typing (some people like to live dangerously though). Obviously, you can’t really use your kit while typing.

-Waiting at the gate: If the match hasn’t started yet, there’s technically nothing you need to be doing. Also, why aren’t you spinning?

-Deep Stealth: Standing still for 1.5 seconds while in stealth in order to become fully invisible. It’s got a definite tactical use, so you wouldn’t necessarily be better off moving constantly as that’d break your full invisibility.

-Body Blocking: The usual habit of stutter-stepping isn’t such a great thing if it means you’re letting an enemy squeeze out of the small passageway you’re blocking.

When I’m soloing bruiser camps, I see no reason to stutterstep. I know some people do just to keep the habit up (or out of pure habit) but to me it’s a waste of energy.

At least against Siege Giants there is a point to ss’ing against them, after they were patched a few years ago so you can dodge their ranged attack.

Because when I AA someone as Tassadar in Arhon form, I need to keep my slow on target and hit him every second to not let him escape.

Couldn’t you stutter-step (stutter-float?) in Archon form though?

Or is there something about Archon’s slow effect that you have to not move in order to maintain? I know you would definitely do this in certain cases in Tassadar’s normal form, since moving would break the slow beam.

When capping a point, or staying on a point (like Volskaya), I will usually mount up and stand still, while roaming my camera around to see what is going on elsewhere.

anchoring, or sitting in a bush, when watching an area to keep allies from getting ganked
Similarly just staying out of map view so people think they may get ambushed when someone is mia for too long

Ah…Mind games.

On the other side of the coin, I’m realizing you could also stand still on purpose to make your opponent think you’re AFK or otherwise distracted, which instills a false sense of security in them. They may then act foolishly, leading to their demise.

When you play Tychus. Or when you’ve just started playing.

against skill-shot heroes when I’ve been dodging the whole time

then you just stand still and end their career when they try to read your juke

I’ve stood still before to bait skillshots out, and then I just move an inch and they miss.

Really messes with people sometimes lol

Sometimes standing still is the best defense against a skill shot, because no one expects you to do that.

When im playing muradin in the offlane and both my opponent and i know that theres not a damn thing they can do to escape ill throw in a dance.

I am horrified to see that no one has yet listed “having Ana on their team” as a situation in which to stand still…

I did.

Although…come to think out it, you sorta havta stand still for Alexstrasza as well.

my standing still is mostly in moments of calm in laning (no minions to defend/kill) or late game (waiting before objective, in bush, etc), when I’m typing something fast. Although more usually when I’m typing I am on the way to somewhere from the hall of storms.

But generally speaking given you can type things over multiple windows, typing should not be an excuse for standing still.

You can move somewhere, type a dozen characters or more and move again, probably before you’ve got to your destination.

Granted, I learned to type fast playing DotA, so I might be a bit more used to this than most.

Fake afk bait for example.

Edit: I see others already mentioned this

Maybe I miss understood your question.

I AA - move - AA as Arhon. I stand still as Tass with faster AA of nothing can one shot me, like Hanzo, Alarak, Li Ming, etc.

I sometimes stand still at the middle of the minion waves, if the enemy laner doesn’t attack me and instead spins, sprays or just kill the wave without hitting me at all, we become friends until 10.

When I lane alone and there’s no one ally or enemy coming to my lane.

When I use Samuro’s Q I often don’t mov the real Sam. Just some tricks to make people not know who is the real one.

Technically someone is standing still for very short time periods all the time, even when stutter stepping one is standing still when the auto attack comes off and one is only moving when the auto attack is on cooldown…
Maybe you should include like a timeframe for your question → Have you ever stood still on purpose for over 3 seconds?
