What is the idea behind the Symbol for Heroes of the storm?

i have some major questions

  1. Who came up with the image for the logo?
  2. why that Logo?
  3. What are some other ideas Blizzard had for The symbol but didn’t use?

It’s a unique symbol that i’m not quite sure what it’s suppose to convey if anything.

i would think maybe the 3 main franchises of diablo, starcraft, and warcraft symbolize the 3 blue lines, it also looks kind of like a storm in that they’re swirling around in a storm like figure, the white is like the clouds and the blue is like the blue sky, blue is also the traditional blizzard color, this is what i think it would mean

The three prongs are meant to represent Warcraft, Diablo, and StarCraft. If you look closely, each of the prongs has a different marking inside of it. Warcraft has smooth, wavy lines like you’d see on Blood Elf, Draenei, or maybe Titan architecture. Diablo has a harsh runes that fit its gothic horror theme. Starcraft has solid lines, like the jerky tech of the Terrans or energy lines of the Protoss.

As for why the shape of the Nexagon, it’s probably just a slick design the marketing team came up with.

They actually had a concept of having it 4 little bits with the addition of Overwatch, and you can see that in some of the official art around that time.

But yeah, the different little things spiraling in the storm are the 3 main franchise they had when creating HotS. Language relating to their franchise is seen written on each one. I assumed the one for Overwatch had Omnic.

Is there a better quality version of that? I’d love to get a close look at it.

The 3 part is the 3 base main universe (WC, SC, DC Diablo) as others said.
And it represents a vortex, swirling and consuming.

It was only around the whole Heroes 2.0 thing was going on, with mega bundles. I think if you check out those updates specifically, you can maybe get a better image.

EDiT: https://heroesofthestorm.com/en-us/heroes20/megabundles/ Check this page out. I think that’s kinda the first and maybe only instance of it?

EDIT2: When compared to our current logo, it looks like the topmost part is the one they added in at the time, and it’s certainly omnic.

huh! i don’t recall ever seeing that four-pronged logo in-game. did they go to the trouble of making a new logo and then only use it on the website? or am i just really unobservant?

i mean, i can see why they dropped it—three is an aesthetically pleasing number, and it pairs much better with the hexagon nexagon shape—but it seems weird if they barely used it at all :0

I’m not sure but I don’t think that the four-shaped logo was ever used outside of “concepts” for HotS 2.0 (it had never reached live).
Since 2.0 was when they’ve introduced Hanamura, they may were probably thinking on adding OW to the logo to include the newest Blizzard IP in that occasion.

Couldn’t find a higher resolution one of the 2.0 one. Like Murloc said above, it is quite obvious the inscriptions on each blade represent the 3 main franchises, and it is pretty easy to detect which one is which.

Something potatoe related, surely…

SpicyMayo26 pretty much nailed it. I feel that hexagons are a very modern shape. Being that the Nexus is a sort of future tech machine portal thing, it fits. Sadly, they didn’t incorporate hexagons in the hero select screen, would’ve been a nice visual of a honeycomb.

The logo with 4 franchises kinda disturb the symmetry. Hex is 6, and 3 is half of that, giving symmetry.

you mean because its circles instead of hex right? ya i understand that. i dont know why they did that one either. the selection screens have been changed a few times in how they look from Alpha Test to the finished release. really the hexagons could have lined up the same way and looked better overall since the game uses hexagons.

i guess i never looked at the 4 iconed logo in that way in the past. that does make some semblance of sense though.

Circles are easy to move around design-wise, and when put close together, they give some space, naturally. Using hex and having them “hug” each other can feel “cluttered” for a lack of a better word. Yes, if they aren’t lazy, they can do the same spacing with hexagons just like they have spacing with the circles.

Possible reason for it being circles. The exp bar is incorporated into the circle. This is a good choice to make it look like a meter filling up. This is how we may view analog clocks. We see the minute hand at the 30 minute mark and easily SEE how much time we have left, we are half way through the hour. Numbers require a different frame of thought.

Thank you!

It’s my inner graphic designer talking really. I love symmetry in things. Symmetry is nice when you understand how numbers and how they interact with each other. Asymmetry is great too, of course.

They could’ve gone with the 4 logo, but they would have to change the shape surrounding it to a square. Squares are boring, usually meant to hold information, and they don’t really feel futuristic. Squares of course, exist in futurescapes, but made to seem more complex. They require more attention, where we don’t see a square.
