What hanzo build do i pick when?

I’ve come to feel that Q build is the best in general. AA build feels like it can be useful against heavy frontline sometimes? and W build feels mostly good on BoE. Does anyone with more experience on hanzo have recommendations on what to pick when

Q build when you need poke on the backline
W build when the map calls for it and you need some PVE damage
AA build when you are safe against the enemy team.

AA build is most important to recognize when and when not to use. The upside is massive with all the talents that synergize with it, and by all the talents I mean AA dps with armor reduction.

AA vs heavy front line, u take W at lvl 7 coz it is synergy with more attack speed and giantkiller at lvl 16
W on cursed hollow or dragon shrine coz there are good walls but Q can be too
and u should never take pve talent at lvl 4
only on BOE it is acceptable
without synergy its trash talent and explosion is way better

I’ve been playing a lot of Hanzo lately and been playing a lot of different builds.

Basically you have to judge the threats the other team can pose to you. If you are dealing with a lot of possible long range poke damage or dive you don’t want to go AA build because dying sets you back. BUT the meta lately has been a lot of Tank, Bruiser, Sustain, Mage/Burst, and Healer. So the only really problem that can be posed is if their mage is long range burst or divey. If neither of those which happens a lot AA build is best.

If you absolutely need to out range them then Q build is the safest bet. I used to be a Q build Hanzo player but as I got more comfortable with what he can do and his weaknesses I have steadily move over from Q build to AA build.

I’ll admit the W build I have had the least success with. It’s usefulness is only optimized in team fights and where you can AA somewhat safely AND there are lots of walls to take advantage of.

My build for AA has been the following:
3, 1, 3, X, 1, 1 or 3, X

Ignore Distractions is more of solo laning talent which is not something Hanzo does well and comes too late. Not saying never pick it but when in doubt don’t.

Now lvl 16 is an interesting one. In this meta I found Giant Killer to be the better one for sustain damage. You can take down high health Tanks pretty quickly with the -Armor talent in lvl 7. Also keep in mind that it affects your scatter arrows too. Flawless technique can be good if bursting is better against the opposing healer.

It’s always been my understanding that Stormbow build was mandatory after the last round of nerfs?

All builds and all combinations are good. Hanzo is one of the better balanced heroes and can be played in different ways, the choice belongs to the player.
I recommend watching the Cris channel, he often plays Hanzo.

Yeah, he plays a lot of Hanzo, is an ex hgc player and is both GM2 and GM4 in EU. He is pretty good to watch and learn.

Here’s the builds he shared after the rework:

This. If you don’t take full AA, redemption with armor reduction against 2 or 3 big HP targets you are just handicapping your team.
There is no reason to take Q or W build in these matchups, you will never deal anywhere near damage to make their front line retreat.

I also get very sad when lowly skilled Hanzos take Q build in a match against Abathur.

why armor reduction?
W cd reduction with redemtion is the best

Because that talent was changed to only give you CD reduction on hero hits.

Before that nerf, I always took W cd reduction, vs. Immortals you could solo half their health in ~6-7 seconds. That talent alone made him a worthwhile pick on BoE.
