What are the names of the heroes in your native language?

A post by @Mamekan made me curious about the names of the heroes in your native language. I’ve seen that some heroes are prone to have significantly different names in other languages.

I’m starting with the German names.

Brightwing is named Funkelchen in German. Funkeln is a verb that translates to sparkle, coruscate or twinkle. -chen is a diminutive and translates to small, tiny. So Funkelchen means tiny twinkle.

Stitches is named Kleiner in German Kleiner translates to little one so the name is the complete opposite of what Stitches is in Game. Another nod for the weird humour of Blizzard.

Whitemane, Greymane, Deathwing and the Butcher have more or less direct translations to German as their name:

Whitemane translates to Weißsträhne. Strähne means Streak or strand which is not very fitting since she has completely white hair and not only a streak.

Greymane translates to Graumähne which is a word by word translation.

Deathwing translates to Todesschwinge which is also a direct translation Schwinge is a less used version of the word Flügel which is a direct translation to wing so the word Schwinge gives the dragon a more archaic sounding name than the more casual word Wing.

The Butcher translates to der Schlächter Schlächter can get translated to Butcher but it has usually a darker connotation. Schlächter can also get translated to Slaughterer which is in my mind a stronger word than butcher

The rest of the names are (unfortunately) not translated. So we have a lot of anglicisms, which is never a good idea in German.

so I miiight of forgotten to read the last two letters turning brightwing into a whole different character

now if we were to assume that it means streak we can get away with it since streak is another word for going around nude and considering how little she wears
if we go by strand then we can say that her last strand of sanity of the plague

yes I will stan Whitemane against any interloper language meaning and change

Hungarian keeps their original names ingame, but I can translate. Plus there are some translated WC comics, so I’ll highlight those as well.

  • BrightWing = FényesSzárny
  • WhiteMane = FehérSörény
  • GreyMane = SzürkeSörény
  • DeathWing = HalálSzárny (same in the comics)
  • Thrall = Szolga (Delej in the comics, which references to be “enthralled”, but no one uses this word)
  • The Butcher = A Hentes
  • Stitches = Varratok
  • Blaze = Láng
  • JunkRat = SzemétPatkány
  • Tracer = (Nyom)Követő
  • Gall = (Vak)Merész
  • Sylvanas (since her name is basically “of the forests”) WindRunner = SzélFutó Erdei
  • Murky = Homályos
  • Diablo (Devil) = Ördög
  • Nova (new) = Új
  • ETC (Elite Tauren Chieftain) = ETT (Elit Tauren Törzsfő)
  • TLV (The Lost Vikings) = AEV (Az Elveszett Vikingek)
  • Ana = Anna
  • Johanna = Johanna (boringly the same)
  • Mephisto = Mefisztó
  • Sonya = Szonja / Szonya
  • Jimmy = Imre
  • Sarah = Sára / Sarolta
  • ProudMoore = BüszkeMór
  • Sgt. (Sergeant) Hammer = Kalapács Őrmester
  • Lt. (Lieutenant) Morales = Hangulatok / Morálisok Hadnagy

Special cases (the more meme ones):

  • Alexstrasza: Alexandra is a female name, but Alex is male with the hungarian version of Sándor. So for meme purposes we can say
    SándorSztraza
  • Sylvanas is similar to Silvia and for meme purpose we call her
    Szilvia
  • D.va is referencing the deevas/divas. It’s
    Díva in hungarian
  • Deckard Cain can be based on canes, so:
    Sétabot Dekárd (since to us, firstnames are at the end of the names and we refer to them as given or after names)
  • Samuro is nicknamed Sam, which is
    Samu for us
  • Lunara can refer to Lunar/Moon (Hold) in which case
    Holdacska or it can be based on the Muslim/Kazahk name meaning Flower, thus
    Virág
  • Fenix is referencing Phoenix, thus
    Főnix in hungarian
  • Probius being a probe would make it
    Próbiusz / Próbocska / Drónocska
  • Chromie was built from Chronos, the God of Time, meaning time, so
    Időcske
  • Imperius based in imperious which means arrogant, so
    Arrogancia (there’s a hungarian comedy cartoon for adults which is a satire about the Snowhite story, in which the evil queen is “Első azaz “Egetverő” Arrogancia” which means Skyreaching Arrogance the First)
  • Lúcio: pretty sure he’s based on Revolution (Forradalom), thus
    Radalom (by chopping down the first part of the word)

For the heroes who are named, the french version keeps the english name. Tyrande is still Tyrande. For the other heroes, they follow the same idea than the english version

English French Possible explanation
Stiches Balafré “Balafré” means scared
Murky Bourbie Diminutive of “bourbe” which means sludge
Greymane Grisetête Litteraly means greyhead
Whitemane Blanchetête Litteraly means whitehead
Brightwing Luisaille Mix of “luire” which means glow and “grisaille” which means gloominess
Deathwing Aile de mort Litteral translation
Sgt. Hammer Sgt. Marteau Litteral translation
The Butcher Le Boucher Litteral translation
Probius EDN-OS I guess the name of the unit in Starcraft
Blaze Kramer “Cramer” is a slang word which means burn or even carbonize
Hogger Lardeur Name in Wow. Diminutive of “lard” which means fat, lard or bacon
Junkrat Chacal I guess it has to do with predating

Special mention for Nazeebo and Gazlowe which are Nasibo and Gazleu in french.

Brazilian Portuguese:

Most names are the same or they just add ´ ~ ^ just to put emphasis on that syllable. Some are literal translations while others kind of a translation.

Deathwing = Asa da Morte (literal translation)

Imperius = Impérius

Orphea = Orféa (PH = F same sound in portuguese. “éa” would be close to “brEAd” sound.

Mephisto = Mefisto (PH = F)

Whitemane = Cristalba (no idea why, but “cristal” in portuguese is crystal. Also, Greymane is just Greymane. Oh, and that’s her name in wow as well)

Malthael = Maltael (We don’t have the TH, so it’s just the T sound. But Abathur, Arthas and others stay with the TH for some reason)

Cassia = Cássia

Probius = Sondius (probe = sonda in portuguese)

Valeera = Valira (ee sound = i)

Chromie = Crona (no idea)

Lt. Morales = Ten. Morales (literal translation of Lt.)

The Butcher = O Açougueiro (literal translation)

Sylvanas = Sylvana (No idea why we don’t have the S at the end)

The Lost Vikings = Os Vikings Perdidos (literal translation)

Murky = Murquinho (No idea why, they took Murk and made it Murqu (usually K = qu) and added the “inho” which is a suffix to usually get the diminutive form or make the word an adjective)

Brightwing = Asaluz (asa = wing, luz = light. Bright would be “brilhante” but they decided not to go with that)

Nazeebo = It’s the same thing but “i” instead of “ee”. Forum doesn’t let me write the name in portuguese cause, well… just think a little.

Sgt. Hammer = Sgt. Marreta (literal translation)

E.T.C = C.T.E (should be Elite Tauren Chieftan translated)

Gazlowe = Gasganete (no idea)

Stitches = Suturino (Suturar = to stitch. Ino in the end to imply diminutive or adjective)

I guess that’s it, all the others are the same. Sure, we say the name of them differently most of the time.

I’m from Mexico, but when I went to the Heroes page to confirm I wasn’t missing anyone, it automatically sent me to the “european spanish” version, for some reason.
To my surprise, a couple of names are actually different between EU spanish and LA spanish localizations, so I’ll list both:

First, we have names that are just different spellings, but the same name:

Chromie - Cromi
Fenix - Fénix
Mephisto - Mefisto
Orphea - Orfea (EU) (in LA, the name is unchanged)

Then, there are the literal translations:

Deathwing - Alamuerte (“Ala” = Wing, “Muerte” = Death; for some reason, they didn’t call him “Ala de la muerte”, like in french and portuguese. You don’t just stick words together like that in spanish (unless they’re adjectives, like the next two heroes :stuck_out_tongue: )
Whitemane - Melenablanca (“Melena”=mane, “Blanca”=white; this name seems kind of awkward to me, for some reason)
Greymane - Cringrís (“Crin”=mane, “Gris”=grey; IDK why they translated “mane” differently. “Melena” is more of a Lion’s mane, and “Crin” is like a Horse’s mane)
Lt. Morales - Tte. Morales (EU) - Teniente Morales (LA) (just the translation of her rank; IDK why latam spanish spells it out instead of using the abreviation)
The Lost Vikings - Los Vikingos perdidos (LA) (for some really weird reason, in EU they’re called “Lost Vikings”, wihtout the “The”, but untranslated)
The Butcher - El carnicero
Sgt. Hammer - Sgto. Martillo(EU) - Sargento Maza (LA) (IDK why it’s different; “martillo” is like a “tool” hammer, while “maza” is more of a mace or a mallet)
Stitches - Puntos
Probius - Sondius (A probe is a “sonda” in spanish, and I think that’s what the Starcraft unit is called; IDK why, but this name in spanish sounds incredibly stupid to me)

Lastly, we have two heroes whose name was just changed:

Blaze - Vulcano (EU) (I guess they wanted to retain the “fiery” nickname; in LA he’s just Blaze)
Brightwing - Alafeliz(EU) - Alasol(LA) (“Ala”=Wing in both, “Feliz”=happy, and “Sol”=sun; I guess the EU version goes more for the “vibe”, while the LA version is slightly more literal on the meaning)

Everyone else is named the same as in english, even heroes like Thrall, whose name is an english word.

I’m actually nervous to translate anything here cuz it will be messy if not blatantly impossible cuz all of it would be English punctuation.

which is actually the same. One time in french the other time in english. Btw. the German word for this animal is Schakal

Proper names are not translated into Russian. Butcher and Stitch are translated literally. Brightwing is translated as Swetik - an affectionate diminutive of the female name Swetlana, Sweta( short). Swet meaneth the “light”.

Probe in French is sonde. So his French name is sonde backwards, but with a hyphen to make it seem more like a robot name.
