VPN and the Storm

So right from the get go I am going to claim ignorance on this topic, I have some questions none the less.

I use a VPN for everything but gaming, as I have always assumed this would be some kind of middleman that would increase ping.
Now there are loads of advertisements from… Basically all the VPN services saying they could reduce ping, and after some Googling this seems to only be the case if your ISP is throttling your connection.

I’m using Ultrafast Fibre, over the wireless the computer maxes out around 300Mbps. However in the last few months I have been getting random stuttering in the game, the ping goes a bit funny, and the FPS drops low, it lasts for like 10-15 seconds.

I just tried playing a match with it, my ping was maybe 5-10 higher than usual, no lag spike in that match… Still lost. Obviously that was Match Makings fault… cough cough

Anyway questions…
Does anyone use a VPN for this game?
Does it improve anything?
Are there settings that are ideal?

Also preemptive answers,
Yes I realise I should be playing wired, but honestly I can’t be bothered drilling holes in my floor and running a wire.

Don’t waste your time with these scams

Scams?

I already use a VPN, it’s a requirement for work.
I’m curious if anyone has actually tried using for HotS in regards to all the claims out there.

it’s not the VPN part that’s the scam. It’s the part when they tell you a service that would only ever increase ping will reduce your ping that is the scam. dont even take the risk of giving these “companies” your credit card info they are shady af, probably would start charging your account when you’re not looking

Oh I see,
You mean the ones with the adds specifically targeting gamers? Yeah they look pretty shady.

The thing that made me curious about it was when NordVPN, Express, Torguard etc all started making the same claims.
TBH when I tried it there was no noticeable difference in lag, I may keep it on just because it’s a hassle to turn it off and on all the time.

I’ll update if the lag spikes stop all together, I’m not holding my breath on that one though. My guess is it’s either NZ Fibre, Blizz Servers, or aging computer problem that’s actually the cause.

Sounds suspicious to me. How would putting one more [something] in between you and the server improve ping?
I could buy apples from the store or I could employ someone external to do it for me. But I don’t expect my apples to be more fresh when bought in the 2nd option.

Yeah I don’t think improving ping is possible, but it actually has stopped those weird lag spikes in my very thorough sample size of Three matches.

With that enormous sample size, I recommend you create a guide on YouTube to go viral

I assume you paid for the service anyway, so feel free to test more.

Not all VPN services are scams, but it’s true that they often have been hacked and have had passwords and other information stolen. Which is ironic as most of these services promote the idea they will protect your sensitive data.

It’s not just about meat, you also have Butcher’s saying “Abathur is the cutest video game character I’ve ever seen!”

Using a vpn or proxy will never decrease your latency. That is false marketing and against the laws of physics.

If you’re a gamer, the only reason to buy a VPN is to bypass country restrictions, for example to play games where you can exclusively log in through a South Korean or Chinese IP.

In our tests we didn’t see any improvements in lag or ping times. On the contrary, while we didn’t see any upsides, many gamers complain online about the connection issues and lag introduced by the additional “middleman” server.

I did read that one, it sounds pretty much right, but it didn’t give any sources at all.
Much like all the claims haha.
I’m more interested about stabilising the connecting now

Sources? AVG are one of the major VPN providers on the market.

If they were slimy, they would market their VPN towards gamers to make extra money.
Instead they are being honest with their test results.

…Yeah still sources dude.
I’m not saying they’re not right, I’m saying they don’t provide any evidence to prove they’re right.
Google Counter Marketing for why that piece holds as much water as the (likely) hollow claims on the other side.

I don’t have a VPN because I’m a gamer, I’m a gamer that happens to use VPN.

Better routing could make it happen actually. There has been some cases where your ISP routes your traffic to the game servers through a saturated node but they route your traffic to the VPN server through a working node, and from there the VPN server could also avoid the overloaded node in it’s path to the game server.

This is hardly reliable though. If your ISP does it’s job well and isn’t trying to scam money out of youtube or the like, they’ll have fast links to the various backbones of the internet. This doesn’t happen all the time though and a VPN could help in those situations.

Thanks, I didn’t think of that.
