Tips for playing Medivh?

So I’m going to just rip this bandaid off right now and focus on playing Medivh until I get him to level 15. I’m trying to get the full roster there, and I just came from mastering Anduin (who I’m fairly good at).

So what kinds of things should I be doing? I spent my first game back to him scouting for enemies, shielding allies against dives, and generally trying to be a nusciance. However, I had a very hard time escaping with portals and even though I was 2nd in damage on the team, I felt like I was just poking for no reason and I also died a lot. To be fair, our team also did not really have a frontline whatsoever in QM and we all averaged like 10 deaths.

Any advice for a new Medivh player? I have a feeling I’m going to tank my MMR trying to get him to 15 in QM lol.

But I want every hero to level 15 or above!?

I just don’t know what I’m doing lol. I feel so useless on Medivh like I’m just spending the entire match aimlessly doing next to nothing.

If there is one constant piece of advice I keep hearing from Medivh players, it’s this:

Play him only in premade parties if possible, it can be awful to play him with strangers.

(I am not competent as Medivh and think he is a tremendous time investment, with a very steep learning curve, who will mostly work in parties)

You might get the wrong (negative) idea about his power level from playing solo Medivh especially in QM. Win rates might be really low by doing that even with a good Medivh player let alone a new one.

You’re not alone. I have him at level 16 currently and I feel like a total noob when playing him alone.

Random people will not cooperate with you. He really does shine when you coordinate portals together with voice chat. He is the most party reliant character in the game , imo.

Any general gameplay tips? I always take Guardian of Tirisfal if we are lacking wave clear late game. I turned so many games around single handedly with this talent, which we would have lost badly since we had no siege damage to clear hordes of catapults and minions.

If it’s QM and we face Abathur (I hate this matchup because he can heal and I can only indirectly with W), I take Reabsorption to help my teammates stay alive.

I have a friend who eventually made it Masters, but he was stuck for years in Gold trying to carry with Medivh. I gave him the same advice you posted, he was terrifically skilled, but if his team wasn’t premade or as skilled they couldn’t take advantage of what he brought to a game as Medivh. It made him feel like Medivh was weak, or he wasn’t good with him, but it wasn’t the case.

So he eventually gave Medivh up until he reached Diamond, he’s happy now he can play his favorite hero.

I took that last game. It was nice to be able to wipe out a giant wave of minions and siege.

I just want to get him to 15 and get it over with lol. Then likely never touch him again.

you need a team that actually understands the hero.

QM solo Medivh the success rate will be very low due to 90% of the hots population not even knowing what a portal is.

I’ve won a few games, the problem is, I’m just turtling them. I’m preventing a lot of deaths, but in turn, it’s making games last forever. I’m averaging like 35+ minutes per Medivh game.

I have completed my quest every match except the first, though, so that’s good.

love it man! good work there hard to win with medivh solo.

ive won few games but winrate solo medivh is in the 40s lol

Have someone who can solo lane/double soak/do macro.

For example Ragnaros.

Note that if you dont have a full party, at least make sure that the teammates you have do synergize with medivh (usualy as a tank to enable more usage). It is still less optimal, but at least you can use a lot more of your abilities in a usefull way.

You can also rely on combo heroes and create a way in which you as medivh can initiate an extended combo. For example mosh into LLS into horrify is a decently known combo (and because of guldan also features decent damage with it). Usualy this requires 2 teammates to pull off as medivhs LLS is often not long enough for chaining abilities. Properly excecuting them can be a pain for the enemy to face.

If you group up, and you notice teammates arent taking portals, just place 1 portal near them and let your teammate use it a few times in front of their face. It will be clear enough to them that they can use them, and it avoids having to chat and potentialy trigger them that way.

For more practical play:

  • enable quickcast for all abilities!
    • your shields will always be too late without it. Your portal already has a 2nd cast when initiated using the 1 button. and your arcane just like your portal suffers if its delayed.
  • If your quest is not completed, dont bother too much about saving a teammate if you would put yourself at risk. Getting killed brings you behind too much.
    • If you get killed beyond level 13, assume you no longer will complete the quest (but still try to ofcourse). In this case saving your teammates can be a better task, but obviously dont throw away your stacks blindly. Sometimes you are still going to be lucky enough that the enemy didnt manage to kill you again.
  • Dont stick too much in ravenform, revealing enemies can be fine if they are grouped up, but if you arent doing anything for 2 minutes, you are potentialy wasting valuable time for your team aswel (you might want to get some camps).
    • The enemy might try to bait your team into going for a steal by going for a camp aswel.
    • Or they just split up, there is no need to follow 2 heroes
  • Your portal is essential, do not waste its use for a 2second timesaver, unless you already know that the next portal will be up before the next fight.
  • If you have heroes which have globals, if you roughly know where abathur is, reveal him in ravenform. If your teammate uses his global, you can still go out of ravenform to hit abathur and finish him. In most cases abathur will move away as soon as he notices you. But it is worthy to reveal him just for the sake of disrupting his efficiency.
    • This is common in qm due to how the matchmaker considers both a support.
    • Dont try to kill him if you cant ensure the kill. Its going to be a bigger risk for yourself.
  • Almost all medivh talents are decent (only at level 1 portal mastery is mandatory), dont blindly rely on talent builds! Sure, they might advise the portal, most teams simply dont use the portal enough for these talents. Use what works for you!
  • Portal mastery is mandatory because of 2 unwritten features (obviously the mentioned features are just as important):
    • It extends your portal placement distance, so if you are running away, you can place the portal ahead of you
    • You can place the first portal marker to guide people towards you soon to be placed portal. This makes people more efficient at preparing to take it (and indirectly causes increased uptime because no time is wasted for your team to walk towards it).
  • Always check which sort of shielding you need at level 13. Sure, a specific version might be more convenient. But the alternatives can prove to be a lot better:
    • CoP is required when the enemy has strong wombo combo potential (mosh)
    • EW is usualy the standard as its most flexible due to its CDR
    • Reabsorption is the biggest niche, but beats EW when the enemy is only able to perform strong combos at longer intervals. Expect this to rarely be needed though (maybe like 2% of the games).
      • Its healing works on fort and merc damage though! If you take this, its worth exploiting this feature for some additional healing. (although it requires communication for efficient use)
  • Dont let yourself get frustrated on failure, you are a support, if your team cannot push well enough you did all you could anyway.
  • And if medivh in QM doesnt suit you… well, i guess its still going to become vs AI then.

And look at some videos of others playing medivh. See what tactics they use, and occasionaly try to perform those ingame (idealy first in vs AI).

Most important is, do not try to rush leveling him, take your time between sessions and look at enemy medivh plays. You learn from their playstyles aswel! And usualy more than playing him yourself.

Here’s my only tip:

Die only after you’ve finished your quest, not before.

I never played Medivh, because of this much of Medivh talents are decent, that hero was once Specialists before going to Support role like Abathur & The Lost Vikings, I had to plays as Abathur & Zarya by default.

In last year Medivh never seen in any Balance Updates, that the fans seem to stop playing him a year after Imperius release since one week before Dark Nexus II patch, Medivh had to need more updates for sure.

As I can seek it, Medivh success rates only 42.08 per Heroes Profile, also Medivh had only few skins since his release compared to Abathur & Zarya, in The Lost Vikings case hasn’t more skins because it’s is complex model heroes, same to Ragnaros which being just bigger (not to Deathwing which being biggest Dragon in the game), Zarya currently played 724 games because would need updates & removed to some of talents.

Update: as I wants Ghost Kerrigan skin, I would upgrades Alarak Core Leaders to Ghost Speeder mount same does to Valeera, both Valla & Nova used between Heart Stone & Ghost Speeder in any various times.

Sorry but for you to play Medivh, you must be physically and literally a Fan.

Please do not touch the bird if you are not Fan.

You dont have to be one at all. The only reason i play medivh is purely because i liked the idea of his kit.

Maybe i am corrupted because of that though

Can you show me pictures that you are truly a Fan though?

I don’t believe you. :rage:

On topic:

  • The obvious:
You probably try to finish your Quest as soon as possible, that good, on rare occasions tho, I personally didn’t mind not finishing it when I wasn’t as good as I am now, sometimes saving someone else is more important on the long run of the match for QM games.
  • Now the tips:
If you plan to finish your quest asap, use Portal and FoW mainly for yourself and be aggressive (but don’t take risks, Medivh can do that).
Imo, pick Poly most the times, lower CD, cannot mess up what the others are doing, good for dualing as well.
For starters, imo, don’t use Portal Mastery in solo QM. Use the Raven Intellect for the slightly better sustain.
Raven Familiar and Arcane Explosion is the better talents at 4 and 7 most the times, helps at dualing and fights.
At 13, I prefer the FoW CD reduction, but for starters and for QM I suggest the heal.
You can soak and steal Globes in RavenForm.
And you should basically just spam and spam Q.
