The "Welcome to the Nexus" Bundle missed the point

The reason that people were desperate for the old 20-Hero bundle Promotion was because it was a quick and easy way to get new players into the game. The quest to get some Gems and the low price of the bundles created the opportunity for the community to grow at an explosive rate by hooking new players with the HOTS gameplay and the promise of a reasonably diverse roster of characters.

The “Welcome to the Nexus” bundle is nothing like that. It offers 11.9% of the roster for 16 bucks.

“But Kith,” you might say, “players can earn Gems by simply playing the game! They don’t need to spend money on Gems to get the bundle!”

Well, theoretical objection friend, the problem is that would take a bunch of time. Unfortunately, Modern Gamers come in two flavors:

  • They don’t have the time to spend. They have school, or a job, or a relationship, or children, or any other number of responsibilities. Building up a good roster takes a lot of investment that they may not be able to allocate.
  • They don’t want to spend the time. HOTS is not the only MOBA out there and the player is spoiled for choice. Many games give you the entire roster immediately (like DOTA 2), causing them to be uninterested in HOTS.

The Welcome to the Nexus Bundle is not supposed to be about generating monetary profit. The profit is supposed to come from the community growing and more players sticking with HOTS. It needs either a massive price reduction or a quest for new players needs to be added that slaps 1,600 Gems into their hands.
