The state of general chat

Anyone else find it incredibly disturbing? Its like a /pol/ livefeed. Constant racist/sexist remarks. I like general chat in other games like diablo or wow… its cool to be able to chat about the game and stuff. But HotS seems to have a unique infestation of hateful content in general. I’m not sure what can even be done about it, but the way it supplies an endless tide of hate speech is concerning.

The strange thing to me is it has always been like this, even though other blizzard games dont seem to have problems like that.

If you remember Healonheels from however-when-ago, they were more proliferate in genchat then they were in the forums.

One issue for HotS chat is that it’s “Free” while other games may require a purchase. So if someone gets reported/silenced/banned, they can reroll instead of needing to pay again.

There have been cases of some deviant conduct in other blizzard games (e.g. barrens chat in WoW) and I think some of that may get filtered out from popular recognition because other outlets exists. WoW still has private servers despite blizzard relaunching WoW Classic; other diablo/starcraft games have mod scenes, and so on.

Like HoH, some of that used to track to the forums and people with “Troll” user accounts come here to post inflammatory, ‘rule-breaking’ things every so often. Genchat is likely a better place for responses or like-minds compared to here

Gen chat is automatically disabled on EU so I only noticed it when I went onto NA.

It just seems like a typical online game lobby to me. No different to when I used to play Red Alert 2, Dawn of War, Wow etc.

I don’t usually pay any attention to it, if I even have it enabled.

It is a taste of the the real world I guess

I had some people over in General Chat trying to scam me even on my very first day in HOTS by saying they were a Game Master who needed access to my account

I just chose not to respond

It makes me feel a bit nostalgic too because it feels like a live-feed of a two-way radio chat between like a gazillion people at the same time where people can say whatever they want

I used to think it was funny a few years ago, but I turned it off around 2021 and haven’t turned it back on since (ten seconds into this new account notwithstanding). There came a point where it stopped being funny to me.

Honestly, it’s so bad that it should just be off for new accounts by default now.

Don’t know what to say: people are their true selves when they can be anonymous. And many (most?) people are monsters inside, reveling in their meanness of spirit. We move through a sea of monsters in the real world, every single day. :man_shrugging:

Sadly very very true

There are no mods to stop them so people can just talk like they want. I can still remember my last year in this game, game was full of people talkng about they had not blowen a nut for X days and the same two people spamming racist slurs and spams AH name in chat and they want all transgenders gone from the planet.

There are nothing worth reading in Gchat anymore or in ingame chat cause its full of 4chan kids that has nothing worthy to do in thier life.

Hate speech isn’t a real thing. But this speech you disagree with is real and a natural aversion to all the social engineering that’s been so prevalent for the past several decades. The social engineering has been significantly more harmful than the speech you don’t approve of. This speech is, although very distasteful at times, heartening and not “disturbing”.

oh good god you’re one of those people

agree to disagree for the sake of my own insanity

People that say that are the same people that support racism and undermines minorities rights in society.

If you consider general chat as Twitter for people too poor to buy the blue badge it makes so much more sense.

I disagree

You actually can hurt people with your words

Part of the reason why I have Team Chat disabled in HOTS is that it’s a distraction when it comes to playing well and improving my skills

It’s really tough to learn from a huge loss when you’re too angry about what that one guy said about your mother in your game

I agree with this.

I find when I retaliate to toxicity it distracts me and I play a lot worse.

I have team chat enabled but now if someone starts I either mute or rep em for abuse depending on what they say and continue with the game.

9 times out of 10 it’s completely pointless replying anyway.

Even if they are completely wrong they wont admit it.

I can remember someone saying to me “stop feeding”

Which was my first death on Illidan, on Alterac and was a relatively reasonable death, not like I was trying to 1 v 5 or something.

The player who said it was a brightwing who had 3 deaths, so I replied “You’ve died more than me.”

To which their response was “Yes i’m the healer.”

Completely worth the effort to reply.

I feel the same way

I generally only engage with people that I can talk with out of game so we have healthier communication and discuss our flaws together

Helps improve teamwork a lot when we can discuss strategies and tactics in advance

Chatting with randoms are a complete waste of time in comparison to talking with a friend who listens and actually talks back in a healthy manner

God damit left Democrats, please leave at least the chat of the game forgotten by everyone and by God himself, with 2k people online, alone. This is one of the most fun things there is in the game. This is freedom. Limit it - and you will get a second Hots wherever it is.

I have news for you: you have no freedoms in Blizzard games that Blizzard doesn’t give you. It’s their product, and their terms of service. You can find the End User License Agreement here. It includes a clause for, ’ Harassment, “griefing,” abusive behavior or chat, conduct intended to unreasonably undermine or disrupt the Game experiences of others, deliberate inactivity or disconnecting, and/or any other activity which violates Blizzard’s Codes of Conduct or In-Game Policies.’

Your deluded definition of freedom of speech means less than nothing in this context. :hugs:
