The list of ultimates I have never taken because the alternate is just too much fun:

Octograb. How can I pass on the murloc army?
Lorenado. Stay a while…classic.
Life Binder. Pass on the flying dragon? Nope
Flailing Swipe. The arm, all the way across the map. Yes, please.
X-Strike. I have a DRAGONBLADE! You better believe I’ve gonna use it.
Null Gate. Why else am I playing Probius if not to weaponize the dang pylon?
Cursed Bullet. Possibly the least exciting ultimate in the game vs an ultimate that really gets at the heart of why I’m playing Greymane to begin with.
Thornwood Vine. I’ve never seen this ultimate in any game.
Divine Palm. There’s a reason I choose Khara to heal, and it’s not for the healing.
Storm, Earth, Fire. The Keg!
Laser Drill. Oh, yawn! Come on! It’s all about the Odin.
Evolve Monstrosity. Ultimate evolution is my only chance all game to actually play! You better believe I’ve taking it.
Sanctification. I’m the angel of justice! I want justice!
Archon. It’s all about the walls.

I have surely lost games by passing on some of the above, but I regret nothing!

Medivac. I love putting stimpack on our DPS and then watching him/her completely fail to make use of it. Or getting overconfident and running into all 5 of them and getting blown to bits. Or watching the enemy all retreat immediately.

Wouldn’t say never, but I’ve probably taken triple tap more often than I should have.

I just find octograb to be an interesting one to start the list with. Its single target deletion potential is too good. Although it’s not better than murlocs, just different. Ironically, on Stukov I usually take flailing swipes for the defensive zone. Different strokes I guess.

Anub’arak- Locust Swarm - In a world where Cocoon exists… why… just why?
Zagara - Maw - give up global presence and infinite sustain? Hahahaha.

I’m actually the opposite way around with that. How can I pass on personally laying my fishy justice on people? It’s so fitting that Murky makes an enemy utterly helpless.

Again, totally the other way around. I play Lunara to poke from the backline and watch my enemies slowly wither away. Why would I want to ram my face right into their team? Leaping Strike is just asking to die.

There’s nothing more sweet than getting those game-winning Palms. Anybody can press R when there are people around. It takes a certain skill to call who’s gonna die before they can react - and to react even faster.

Twinblades of fury, bladestorm, strafe, rocket ride, bestial wrath.

I virtually never take Dragon because i love to see the targets life (repeatedly) jump back to full health.

Vines is usually the better one unless you need the mobility or burst. The sound effect of Vines is also very satisfying (but this is true for both of Lunaras heroics).

My guess would be Frost Blast if I had to pick one, I mean Fissure all the way, why would I pick KT if not for that ?.. Pyroblast is also one of my non-pickables cause, well = let’s just say that by the time pyro gets it’s value chances are Phoenix would’ve reduced half opponent’s roster to crisps already and right away :slight_smile:

For the awesome chain reaction? Seeing some mobiles glued to the ground awating their doom? Frost Blast all the way!

I remember the arcane power 's time where you could increase pyro’s power with spell power booster talents.
Those flying ragdolls were glorious.

I never take the rip tire on Junkrat. I fail to see why that’s the better option to having a free escape that is linked with some good damage. Especially since rip tire can be destroyed.

I also never take reverse-amp although I would really love to. The crap you get from your team for not taking sound barrier is unreal.

I never take Ragnaro’s other ultimate than lava wave. The other one has a far too high cd for what little value it gets me compared to lava wave.

I would love to take Zul’Jin’s Thaz Dingo more but I tend to get myself killed all the time, so I take the guillotine instead. It’s got a decent cd and is safe dmg.

Mind control on Sylvanas always felt lackluster to me, even before the rework.

Never take Li-Ming’s other ultimate. I don’t even know what it is and what it does. Disintegrate is too much fun.

I have never taken Tychus’ laser for the simple fact that it is stationary and can be avoided. Odin can at least move back or chase after his targets.

I always take Zarya’s graviton because I fail to see where the other one could be useful.

I never take bunny hop because Big Shot feels so much better to have.

I always take Dragon strike as Hanzo because I never seem to get any value out of the other one no matter what I do.

I never take Eye of Horus on Ana because Nano boosting is quick and simple. The Eye is only useful if you are not with your team which I try to never be.

I would love to take Archon on Tass, but force wall is what gets the kills or prevents your team from getting killed, sadly.

For the sound it makes when it sticks a target between a corner and itself to the point it sounds like the Blue Screen of Death. :stuck_out_tongue:

I take it when I need safe poke damage. But yeah, most of the times Leaping Strikes cuz who doesn’t love that demonic laughter?

Sanc is a beautiful heroic. You save the innocent!

Eh, both are equally great heroics to me. Turning into a fearsome giant glowy alien that shocks the hell out of you and building walls out of nowhere is fun.

Same. But what I do like about Sylv’s old MC was that you can manually control the target.

I’m the opposite. I pick WoF since it can interrupt channeled abilities and heroics. And it’s hella satisfying to push chasing enemies away with it.

Octograb is an awesome isolater. Against squishies, especially on gank/ambush/dual heavy maps (like WHJ, DS), it’s amazing.

Summoning a “Chen Keg” is nojoke. Also if your team lacks burst, it’s mostly a waste.

Life Binder is super stron healing Heroic but I see a pattern:

1 target vs many. Swipe can secure an obj like on ToD or a disengage.

Well some Genji’s need the extra escape. And you don’t always have a healer for Dragonu Bradeu.

I recently started to use Nullgate and it’s a death sentence basically.

Cursed bullet is a strong engage/tf strarter Heroic. GftT is a finisher. Against strong frontlines, CB is the way to go.

There are times when you want aoe and poke more than leap.

SEF is a second healthbar basically.

For solo monkaS and for defing objs.

Santification is among the top 10 Heroics.

But… but… Power Over Whelming!

I would legitimately say that Null gate has more uses than Pylon does.

The laser is more situational. But when properly used its a good damage dealer for the team and would force the enemy to take it out first. And if they cant then it can do a lot of damage over time. The laser is potentialy capable of dealing 3x a pyroblast worth of damage.

The 2 things to check before planting are:

  • Can the enemy retreat? If so, they can avoid the laser entirely and that means its a full waste. But during the defense for a fort, if they retreat you get free damage on the fort. And this can benefit your team.
  • Can the enemy easily destroy it without taking risks? If so, dont expect it to do the full damage. Specificly when the enemy has melee heroes, if they want to take it out, they have to get close. And this can be used as a trap for them, while if they dont take the bait, they cant engage or get damaged hard.

If both conditions are against the enemy, the laser is an extremely powerful zoning tool. And thats what makes it very usefull during objectives. Even if it barely did any damage, just its existance can be enough of a hazard for the enemy.

Rip tire is a lot harder to dodge

If your team can actually soak, smash is significantly better. Insane burst damage and a ranged stun.

Wave of force is very good. Decent burst damage, interrupt, and displacement every 20 seconds or less. It also doesnt root you to the spot and make you chromie food or whatever

Its like holy ground on tyrael. Though its a little underwhelming, i’ll give you that.

Nano is useless on a large portion of the cast. Horus is a powerful heal and also lets you pick off low hp heroes.

Lifebinder is insane. It got buffed so much I dont think i’d ever take cleansing flame.

Null gate is extremely powerful at zoning and it basically roots a hero of your choice who is rtying to dive you for several seconds. Pylon overcharge is too easy to counter, I just dont think it’s viable anymore.

Deals a lotta damage, pokes backline, very strong heroic.

Maw is strong for the same reasons as containment disc and cocoon. Completely remove someone from the equation for a while. It also makes an unpathable area which is a big deal.

Pyroblast is strong. Extreme burst damage and Kael is pretty adept at forcing out defensive cooldowns. Phoenix is zoning, but doesnt deal that much damage in comparison.

Frost blast is pretty good. Big aoe root on the enemy team can set up power plays for sure.

You gotta reconsider Octograb. Murloc Army is fun when it works. The problem I see is too many times, the enemy heroes avoid the march easily, and it results in zero kills, even if you did save the fort or whatever. And then the cooldown lasts forever.

Octograb can result in a lot of kills (pretty satisfying), and the cooldown is significantly shorter.

Many of these responses are useful information about strategy, which is missing the point! I CANT pass on the murloc army. I just can’t. Even when I know it’s the wrong call. I just love the little fishes too much.

This isn’t a list of useful/non ultimates. These are the ultimates I can’t take because the others are just too much fun. How can you not take the bambi leap of death as lunara?

I know I should take Sanctification. Sometimes I hover over it for a second before saying “screw it, I want justice!”

Surely I’m not the only one who picks for fun even though strategy would dictate otherwise?
