Hi Friends! Seeing that neat Resurgence of the Storm project reminded me that I promised to share the in-progress Arthas rework we were working on prior to the slowdown. Well, I dug deep and found some stuff, hopefully someone finds this interesting!

Stupid disclaimer stuff:

This is NOT a preview of something coming or hints of a grand revival, no matter what NotBelial tells you.

I am sharing this for fun and nostalgia, NOT as any form of official announcement from Blizzard.

This was NOT balanced, this was a 3rd-4th iteration that had barely been play tested. We were trying a variety of mechanics and angles to pursue.

This was written in an internal patch note style, I make no promises on its formatting/informational clarity.

thank you for sharing.

Oh boi. Would’ve mained Arthas a bit, just simply due to the QoL changes to his old kit.

He wasn’t wrong this is so busted but is so in character. Sure it’s literally Butcher without the losing stacks part but it would be interesting to see.

The 20 mount is such a death knight thing.

This is my favourite part. Army is currently a lame heroic for how flashy it looks. It might as well be Dehaka’s self-heal with how it plays out in games. This gives it a much more flavourful facelift.

Although, I don’t love the team’s obsession with giving every hero a baseline stacking quest. They tried to give one to Muradin, Azmodan got one, Valla is forced to pick one, I dunno. I’m not a fan of having so many heroes who scale throughout the game.

This is what annoys me. Like, it didn’t have to come to this point in the first place. This goes for his mana consumption too. Was playing with a poor Arthas that was pretty decent but went oom pretty quickly, which back then would have just been a drawback in his kit. In today’s game with so many heroes with little mana tension or even no mana at all, it’s just a straight up liability.

I also like when heroes need to carefully managed their mana. It doesn’t need to be like dota where you use 2 spells and can’t do anything anymore, but something like Arthas or Tyrael is definitely fine. Or Uther.

Mana is a ressource and knowing how to best use it should be a skill in the game.
