Teach me Tyrael

Played him in ARAM and had a tychus that used my speed boost effectively,
I now want to have this hero when playing with actual non potatoes

teach me the archangel of Justice

I have a fairly decent tyrael winrate for a non tank main.

Level 1:
Justice for all if you are worrued about teammates, bigger w for yourself if you’re maintank and concerned about being blown up, heal for bruiser/offlaner

Level 4
Armor if maintank, q slow if not, e build if you think they’ll clump and have alot of bodies (samuro)

Level 7
W if tank, aa/speed if not, smite if you go clump build

Level 10
I stand by invulnerable unless they have zeratul or your team has dive.

Level 13
E build if youre going for it, i always get the q circle if not its just too good.

16
I swear by burning halo, tp to q at last second to get full timer out of it. E build otherwise. I dont get cdr often

20
Situational. Attack speed good for aa/smite build, armor if you’re getting blown up, cannot go wrong with empowered invulnerable either though if Youre getting value out of it.

Basically pretend q is an extension of your tanki g abilities, throw it down to hold down area in front of you(and keep armor up), use smite as a disengage. Dont hang around if they push through your q area you aren’t Diablo. Once you burn abilities and your shield expires back off. I love playing him on maps like braxis/towers bc of his mobility. Try to pick him with dive teams or people like chromie bc he can make divers hate their life. Dont pick into zeratul he’s a hard counter.

Fyi q talents i ignored at 16/ (13?) are good talents. I just dont use them and cannot comment.

One tip that is really great harby barby always does is ping santification before using it so it wont suprise your own team

Always have an escape in mind
When escaping E under your heroes
Stay near an ally who is kinda then press W whenever they are in combat
If its only you going in you can W yourself or first use Q on your team then W

Holy ground is good but before TP’ing look if you dont boop the target out

[TEACH ME TYRAEL]

NO!

The way you can get in game, I will not encourage you to play a hero that requires team play. Forget Tyrael.

I agree you can better main muradin then tyrael. You get the same results
50% att speed reduction is the same as his shield

Dont pick sanctification ult if youre up against zeratul or medivh. They both counter it with VP and leyline. Or should I say either of them can.

I could probably copy/past my takes from other topics but to try to tl;dr some of that:

I view tyrael as having 3 styles of play:

  1. Support hero
  2. Bruiser (holy Illidan)
  3. Magic zomgbbq tank.

Support style focuses on buffing allies with speed, shields, etc etc and plays like a “protect hammer” comp regardless of having hammer on the team or not. El druin tends to be cast behind your team while you posture up front, and then be a reverse mephisto in taking that time to soak hits (if +armor talent) and posture around before teleporting back (esp if baiting out an enemy cc chain like garrosh throw)

Part of the fun of Support-style is that some of Tyrael’s abilities work on all allied units, so you get a mini-“specialist” build in buffing minions too.

Bruiser style focuses on dps talents (smite and aa) and just looks to bully the enemy heroes with favorable trades since Tyrael has surprisingly good sustain (with talents) and can always try to force a trade (trait value) if things go south. The hyper aggression can be hard to not ‘feed’ on that since it takes more practice on making use of his stutter steps (like genji, Tyrael has a slightly different effect on hit + move than heroes of the same slot)

The last “tank” type build for Tyrael is the sort of stuff people do in organized play. Holy Ground is considered essentially to that play and you play a mix of aggression/protection as a zoning “tank” that’s very different than most other heroes. That’s the sort of thing I’d recommend seeing old hgc or other organized scrims on seeing how they use tyrael to disrupt the enemy team.

Yep. Had a 70% winrate with tyrael when i picked him in niche situations. Got excited and tried to main him, now its 50%ish. You’ll just frustrate yourself if you try to force it. Muradin is a much safer pick.

Hey if you enjoy being frustrated.

First thing first, adjust the key bind of abilities to suit yourself, I suggest Q to remain default and set Judgment on quick cast, I personally prefer my E to be on release so I can see the AOE area clearer.

If you want to play Tyrael with those veterans as you mentioned then discuss with them beforehand how should your team play.

Be aware of his style of peeling, your team should know when to flee or fight “on their own” to some degree coz Tyrael can only help them to move but can’t stop enemy to not follow you very effectively.

You might want to draft aggressive team to play with him, he’s more excel in assault rather than defense, you go in fast, kill your target fast, retreat fast and do something else, or else pick him as a laner/bruiser to harass and hunt down backliners/deserters.

Mr. Xenterax’s suggestion described how he can be played firmly, so I’ll share my way with him for some more.

How to play this dive tank in general is…AA(auto attacking), BB(body blocking) and being annoying?, so make it simple what you normally do keep attacking the best target at a time, uses your abilities to support both yourself and team to bodyblock someone to secure kill while juking around to annoy your enemy in the process.

There’s no fixed & best build imho, as a solo tank(which is not ideal but can work around) you’d better observe your allies and tailor your talents to cover their weaknesses but that’s for QM environment for the most part coz when playing in draft mode you expect specific things from him with specific ally heroes, right?

You need to try to fully understand your abilities.

Q; it’s not just a teleport tool, this is his core ability, you can do many things with it and don’t rush yourself to teleport.

  • It’s your extend vision, a ward to observe and set up.
  • It’s your stalling tool to channeling objs.
  • It’s your bluffing tool to bait out enemy’s skill
  • It’s your decoy to trick enemy the direction you wanna go, so throw it to a direction then run to another, if you got followed then teleport back, if they split to follow and wait your teleport then pick the safest way or keep running to make the one waiting change his mind then teleport back in the last millisecond.
  • It’s your juking tool, waste their skill shots!
  • It’s your bodyblocking tool both secure kill and reposition between you and allies.
  • It’s your dismount tool, got followed?, seeing enemy trying to rotate by mounting up? dismount them waste their time and expose them on the map.
  • with lv.4 talent more slow, more secure kill and escape chance.
  • with lv.13 SWOJ talent more juking, bluffing, scouting, harassing, better AAing.
  • Holy ground? you know it.
  • with lv.16 talent more lane/merc clearing, also stealth detecting and damage.

W; simple use, saved many players from Pyro/last rite and so on.

E; Apart from speed buff(minions/merc included) it still is your damage, place it in order to harm and help team at the same time is preferable, despite it categorized as “instant” cast but it starts instant from the right side to left side, not that instant so you might miss your target coz of this, practice and get used to it. It’s also a skill shot that can cast past any obstacle, killed many souls behind the gate thinking they’re safe with that tiny pinch of HP.

Sorry if this seems to be a wall of text, I can’t just tell everything but feel free to ask anything you’re curious about so I can narrow the answer down.

In addition to the excellent advice above, remember that your W shields minions, not just heroes, so you can completely and utterly piss off heroes like Azmodan and Murky who require last hitting minions for their quest stacks, and whose abilities are obviously telegraphed.

I would also like to emphasize that Tyrael is the best body-blocker on the entire roster. Use Smite and El’druin to quickly reposition during a fight, and always keep an eye out for potential flanks from the enemy team. Getting your big angelic self between your allies and those who would harm them, or preventing an enemy from escaping is something that should become an automatic reflex when playing Tyrael.
