That is all
Plz lovely forums teach me the drunken panda
Drink away your pain. Literally.
The new Stagger ability is a great thing vs burst dmg.
I have to name that “tychus vs chen.gif” for my hots folder…
Watch streams and videos of grandmaster players.
There’s nothing the forum can teach you that you won’t already know from reading his talents
Depends on what you want to do with Chen. Want to chase? Build for it. Want to be a support tank and give your entire team shields as you get drunk? Do iiiit.
Want to split into 3 mini pandas instead of take a cool displacement ulti? Well, now you’re pushing it buddy lol.
Just be aware that Chen can kill himself and since he’s an endangered animal…that would make you a bloody psycho!
Did you participate in the Qhira drinking games?
If so you already know how to play him
Both ults are nice and strong.
Do you know about the dive E + earth water fire ult combo?
I only play E build so im not the best at explaining chen
I don’t play as Chen often, but when I do, I have fun jumping a squishy ranged with poor mobility, use barrel roll ultimate, and delivering them to my team.
Enemy Malfurion? I jump, roll him over to our assassins. He may desperately try to root me, but I’m unstoppable during my ult. It’s only on 50 second CD too. So in late games, I can use it on just about every team fights and objectives, and ensure that they are going to be down on one player as fight begins.
Think of Chen as Fat Illidan, start with full brew bar, Q into hero W, wait, W, Drink. then Q to an enemy minion to get out and reset. Mobility on the fat panda is key, get in hit hit hit get out.
if you take too much dmg E to mitigate and then repeat. work in some auto attacks when you can.
To many people just stand there and drink until they die, your survivability is high but not infinite so have a plan for your button presses don’t just mash them because they are up. Bad chens go in do dmg then just stand there and drink and hope to out last whoever is attacking. Good chens plan their entrance AND their exit before they go in.
Talents I like to take (semi-long)
Level 1
Eye of the Tiger, the healing off AA’s is better than off the abilities
Freshest Ingredients, I choose this when there are blinds on the enemy team. because blinds negate Eye of the Tiger’s healing.
both work with the AA build
Level 4
Accumulating Flame, really good against other melee since AA’s keep them on fire longer, taking more damage (AA build).
Withering Flames, extremely good against mages.
Level 7
Brewmaster’s Balance, an always because movement speed and health regen are amazing.
Elusive Brawler, an always pick against AA heroes.
Level 10
Storm, Earth, Fire, because you can lock down heroes and burst them down pretty easily. Great against squishies. The last ability you use is empowered so I always save the Earth ability (I think its W but I don’t remember) for last because it roots allowing you to secure kills much easier.
Wandering Keg, good against a lot of CC and if you think the pushback peeling would be beneficial (like if Butcher uses Lamb on your allies you can push him and enemies away so he can’t deal damage). Also interrupts channeled abilities. Great for zoning also.
Both heroics are great, but I take Storm, Earth, Fire more often than not. Personal preference for me at least. Consider CD’s Wandering Keg is less than half the CD.
Level 13
Ring of Fire, I take this talent if I feel like I want to be more offensive and if I can consistently stay near an enemy.
Enough to Share, I take this if I feel we could use a little more damage mitigation. Great if you’re grouped.
Level 16
Combo Strikes, synergizes with Eye of the Tiger and Freshest Ingredients (both level 1 talents) and Accumulating Flame.
Celerity, if I can AA and if I need the extra damage mitigation.
Level 20
Elemental Conduit, empowers all 3 abilities so you always root, have a much larger shield and deal much more damage.
Purifying Brew, only if I take Wandering Keg at 10. Good if they have a lot of CC.
Energyzing Brew, only if I take Wandering Keg at 10. Good if you want a little more health and damage. Works great with the fire talents because you can deal lots of damage this way.
Brew
Chen is a great laner that can also be very useful in fights and brings a ton of utility. He utilizes Brew to recharge energy and give himself a shield. The main idea is to drink brew as much as possible because it he relies heavily on it. My first tip is always make sure you are using your brew. Always, always, always. Doesn’t matter if you’re max on health, use it before every engage! Also use it if you suspect a gank or something because the shield can help a lot.
Laning
When laning, always try to make sure the enemy hero is within range of your W (both of them) Its not bad to engage with your Q to close the gap and then use both W’s on them. They’re slowed so you can really scare them out of the lane. Then, if you get hit a bit while engaging, use E, leave, and then hit D to brew. You’ll get rid of all of the DoT that E gives you. If you can help it, don’t stop using D until you get rid of all the DoT damage. I believe that because you have the shield, the DoT E gives you eats up the shield you get from drinking brew. This is why he’s so good in lane. If he starts taking damage he can mitigate a good chunk of it. Careful with AA heroes though because they can usually deal more damage than your shield can provide, I usually struggle with Raynor in lane.
Team fights
When in team fights, you want to attack the backline, because your Q gives you the range and E and brewing can give you the protection. I’m also assuming you have a healer that can heal you. Chen is great at zoning out because he can be a freakin pest and make heroes retreat because he can chase them pretty well. Just careful in diving all the time because then they’ll start focusing you and you’ll be a dead panda, quickly. One thing to practice is timing your W and making sure you hit heroes 2 times with W. If you can do that and auto attack them, you’ll be in good shape. Just find time to brew in between even if you have to retreat a little. You don’t ever have to finish your brewing, but do make sure you have enough to use your abilities. No point in brewing if you dont even have enough energy to do something.
Q utility
You can also use Q to retreat and it works on anything. Heroes, minions, buildings, walls. So don’t destroy the walls! They can save your life. Chen’s Q is like Malthael’s W so it puts you on the opposite side of enemies. That’s a great way to position yourself to body block enemies, so take advantage of it. Its also great for chasing.
Ults
When using Ults, you can use Wandering Keg wherever, its just better if you position yourself from where you want to push enemies from. If you want to bring your enemies into danger (towers or your team) then get behind them. If you want to peel for your allies, well that’s self explanatory. Its a pushback also so use it to break channels, and your team will love you. Your enemy will hate you, which is equally as good.
Now, Wandering Keg is fine… Storm, Earth, Fire, is trickier. First things first, positon before you use it. It doesn’t grant unstoppable so if you get stunned during the channel it won’t work and you’ll have to wait 10 seconds to try to use it again. Be very aware of when you use it and try to position yourself before hand. Keep in mind that if all 3 are still alive before the ult ends, Chen might not return where the safest elemental is, so do try to remember that if you are chasing or running. It could potentially put Chen out of position.
Its good to be aggressive with Chen, but its also important to know that its sometimes better to be defensive. He can struggle against CC so also keep that in mind. He doesn’t get an unstoppable until 10 and 20.
Sorry this is so long but I feel like its great advice. Chen can be hard to play because he has a lot in his kit to worry about, but he sure is fun. Hope this helps.
Is Wandering Keg good these days? They nerfed it so much that it wasn’t reliable when the third rework hit the game.
Wandering Keg isn’t that good, the other ult is much better because it effectively gives you 3 health bars (and no I am not talking of the three pandas), first you have your own health bar, dive into middle of the enemy and pop your E, which staggers all the damage, then when the duration is about to run out, use your ult, and you turn to three pandas and all that staggered damage is gone forever, then after your ult ends (assuming the enemy didn’t kill all three which is extremely unlikely to happen), your back at more or less full health bar once more on Chen, regardless of how much health the three pandas had left.
Chen; Dva edition lol.
get to 10
take keg
flying kick over your enemy and keg them back to your base
First you drink until you can barely stand.
Then you climb in a barrel.
Then you begin to feel regret.
