Support Hero Classification

Why even have the “Support” classification of heroes?

I get that they’re ‘odd balls’ that don’t fit anywhere else, but if QM doesn’t match against other supports (which it never does anymore), then why do the classification even matter?

It’s only been, what?, two years since Blizzard got rid of the specialists, and they still haven’t figured out what to do with these heroes and QM in general. I guess maybe they’ll get it in 5 years or so?

Classification is good for new players to understand what the heroes are supposed to do/what role they play.

I don’t know what “support” means or why, being a lot like Tyrael, Zarya is a support.

Zarya , i agree 100% shes a support.
Tyrael however , it really depends if he choses to build into that .

I mean, she still has a lot of tools tanks have. No hard engage but a ranged mini Mosh pit is pretty powerful, and she can definitely take the beatings and punish players for trying to abuse her out of the lane that way.

Support is an awkward category.

True ! And some heroes seems to fill in two roles at once which i actually dont mind !

I find support to be pretty cancerous thing to que quick match as because it’s such a small list of vastly different heroes. It still tries to put support vs support in a very ham fisted way. I don’t know what would be a good way to do it but the support classifications lack of actual themes is a problem matchmaking wise.

no more “Tass, no heal?” in newbie games.

Happened in my early games lmao

QM does match supports as far as I can tell.

If I pick Zarya I’m always against medhiv ,Tassadar or Abathur. And when I pick Abathur, that’s when I get games against TLV. the MM seems to consider Murky a support as well since it will always match me against Aba or TVL.

Agreed. I think we might make some progress with the role system if it allowed for two roles to be assigned to one hero. One could be the primary descriptor and the other a secondary. I could certainly describe a lot of heroes as being between two roles.

I mean, they’re heroes that absolutely depend on other heroes to function. It’s not like Tassadar or Abby can do all the seige themselves, or when your skills depend that other people use them or need other people to play with them, abby can’t hat himself and zarya has “shield ally” not “shield myself again”.

Supports are supportive, not healers or damage dealers, just enablers.

Which support does not support apart from TLV?

What do you mean they haven’t figured it out? Their kits are focused on supporting allies and supports vs non-supports isn’t an unfair matchup. There’s no problem to solve.

I disagree, I play a lot of medivh and i must say that i find it ridiculous that the label of support even exists. I of course understand that my portals and shields can be used by my allies but i don’t think that is reason enough to not call Medivh an assassin. I think the same about Zarya.

With Medivh i am constantly top dmg, top kills, and i also am supporting my team, yes; but i feel like an assassin, more like Genji than Alexstrasza.

Other heroes help their team aswell, if gul dan casts a fear, he can save his healer; that doesn’t make him a support. I don’t find any reason for the support role to exist.

If it was up to me, i would just make a new category for TLV and Abathur and delete the support label entirely.

Tassadar perfectly fits support role and I’m fine with that. On top of that I would add more heroes in support category, like Uther, Kharazim.

Considering how Tassadar will be reworked into a full Ranged DPS (or so they said), I would gladly agree with also a rework of Zarya to make her more like a Bruiser/Tank and also revisit both Abathur, Medivh and TLV in order to place them in some other Roles and get rid of the Support label, since it’s very niche and pointless.

With some fix Abathur can become an Healer (mostly sheilding instead of direct heals but still); Medivh can easily turn into a Ranged DPS and TLV… Melee DPS maybe (after a complete rework here)?

Kek.

That could be the idea 5 years ago but I think its pretty obvious new players dont give a F. I would rather stop at cuz QM.

Uh. What makes you find them similar?

No thanks. Same for others.

Part of the fun of HotS is the oddball heroes like Abathur, Cho’Gall, the lost Vikings and Medivh.

Global but not in character, “two players own character”, meant to be played across the map, enables team movement and saves teammates.

Rework the heroes of they’re janky, but they have a place. And they bring a unique factor.

It tries. I think it is a rule that they throw away very early into extended queue.

I would say about 35-55% of my games as supports feature a support on the other team.
