So when do I pick W build Chromie?

I legit have no idea. It feels like every time I went W build, I would still do a lot better on a Q build. By that I mean, I picked W build against enemies that grouped up to finish the quest early, or against fat hitboxes to also finish the quest, but in both of those scenarios, it felt as if Q build would still be better because it was also a lot easier to land Sand Blasts…

The reason I’m asking this is because Q build does a lot more damage, and overall feels like the most dominant by a mile, so I simply can’t find a good enough reason to take W talents?

Q build will outperform W build even if the enemy team is clumped.

I don’t take W build.

I’ve never actually picked a W build with Chromie since I started playing her. The main thing is that considering her current talent tree, W-focused talents simply don’t fare well enough against their competition.

Deep Breathing is simply too weak of a payoff for sacrificing a whole third clone, and even Timewalker Pursuit is a better choice due to it granting additional vision globally (and not just around Chromie), revealing stealth and granting % spell power instead of flat damage, making it scale better in the late game and benefit both Q and W.

Mobius Loop simply isn’t going to compete against reliable % damage increase talents. While its requirement is the easiest of the three to fulfill, the rewards are simply not enough. 25% additional damage for 5 seconds that you can proc off your own Slowing Sands / Time Traps if talented with the slow will always surpass CD reduction and Mana return, especially considering Chromie is not comparatively really Mana-hungry. Though I’d argue that A Proper Greeting would be the correct pick for a proper W build as well.

Q-based talents synergize too well together, especially considering Chromie has talent tiers (looking at you 16) where the most reliable talent requires Sand Blast hits. Who would want to divert more power to various parts of their kit when they could make a single ability powerful, reliable, and rewarding in regards to the rest of their kit at the same time?

To summarize, Q-based talents simply synergize too well together and scale too well into the late game to make room for a W-build, especially considering most of the talents you’d pick in your Q build would also benefit W thanks to % spell power and damage increases over her whole kit.

After her rework? Never. Most of her power is in Q anyway for the various reasons listed above by Tydal.

W Build on the new Chromie is badly designed and just not worth picking.

Before rework I sometimes went full W for the first three tiers, giving her massive nukes on center hits. But now that W is just a poke tool which hits 3 times that is no longer possible.

When your team desperately needs waveclear. Sometimes you get matched with a team with really low waveclear or your team drafts almost no waveclear. You should think about going W in those cases.
It can work well on tomb as well.
