Salt Mountain: Insert bad game stories here

What your saying makes perfect sense to me. I just run into a problem.

I have a pretty low wr with Garrosh which might be due to what you’re saying. However, even though he’s probably a more technically played hero, I feel more comfortable with his kit than other tanks (Varian, Mura, Diablo, and Garry). I have a sub 50% wr with Varian, Mura and Garrosh while sitting at a 52% wr with Diablo. I don’t always go tank Varian but idk how to see which build of Varian I am most successful with personally so idk if Taunt Varian is statistically successful or not. Diablo is probably only higher because I pick him more often when I feel like he can be most useful. He’s not my go-to tank. Picking him on Volskaya sucks for me because its so open and hard for me to consistently bang enemies into walls vs a map like Infernal Shrines or something. In ranked recently if I am going to be flexing into the tank role my first pick preference is Garrosh, then Varian, then Mura and only Diablo if I like the map or comp.

I might be wrong in this but I feel like the displacement and lockdown Garrosh provides and the fact he can be pretty tanky due to his armor can still be valuable even if the enemy assassins aren’t consistently proficient enough to blow up who ever I can single out. I don’t know exactly what my losses with Garrosh are caused by but that’s why I still pick him most of the time. I think its better for my team in general if I’m playing a tank I’m comfortable with vs playing a tank I’m not as comfortable with. It might also mean I just need to learn more tanks but that’s a whole other thing.

I’m a broken record, but your post is what I love about The Salt Mines. In the OG SM, so often simple complaints would spark interesting and informative discussions.

For that reason alone, I’m grateful Phase revived this thread.

It’s hard to say without seeing the games. But Garrosh needs to use bushes and vision more than every other tank.

Here, I knew the Nazeebo would insist on (slowly) rotating top/mid and would not actually be a dps. Picks were changed after I locked. My dps was not ideal so I got most of our kills with tower shots. (It helped that the Varian wasn’t very good)

On Muradin, I didn’t do very well with him until I saved my W to use as peel, unless I was certain it would get me a kill.

But Generally, just practice as many Tanks as you can. Garrosh can be Niche so maining him has its disadvantages.

welcome back minky.

I do think I use bushes pretty often but I can probably try to work on not being seen entering the bush as much so that its more of a surprise to enemies.

The biggest issue I have is I can throw enemy players into my team for what should be an easy kill but they seem to get away a lot more often than when other Garrosh’s do it to my team. I honestly don’t know what else to do to kill them besides using my W on them and auto attacks.

I remember in one of Hoku’s tank guides she explained how to utilize bushes as a tank and I have tried my best to use that information in my games but I feel like there’s also something else I’m not doing that I should be but I can’t figure it out myself.

I think I’m going to just have to bite the bullet and share replays in hopes someone else can help me analyze what I am doing wrong and can do better. That seems like a training session and idk if anyone here would do that kind of thing for free. I’ll share some of my games and try to just put any defensive walls down so I can be receptive of any advice or tips people give.

Purple man would be so much more fun without Varian existing.

I totally support Varian’s flexibility, but if you want to play Purple man in QM, and exclude healers and tanks, you will 99% of the time be given Varian if you don’t also exclude bruisers.

I try to use any location the enemy don’t have vision. For example, on Dragon shire, in the mid lane the bushes do a triangle
_
/ \ <— I stand here.

The enemy doesn’t have vision on me, and they never saw me enter the bush, but my team mates give me vision on them, so anyone who walks into the mid bush I can throw at my team. Or anyone moving too far forward because they figure the tank is afk.

Well, besides a lack of burst as mentionned earlier, there’s another reason this could be happening. Mainly, it’s because people are dumb.

You have Garrosh as tank, so you know he’s going to throw kills at you. That’s all he does. But even if you have burst, you might STILL not get the kill. Why? Because your potato team mates already used their abilities, likely missing a skill shot. Your team mates abilities may be on cooldown, because they won’t wait for you to serve them a kill before using their abilities. I sometimes have to watch a kill walk away, because my KTZ used his W on a minion wave a second before I threw the target.

In that case, you have to manage your team mate’s cooldowns in your head, and throw enemies at them when you know they have their abilities. Because they’re too dumb to save them for your engage.

Are you kidding? I live for data analysis. GIVE ME DATA!

Another day with 2 wins 8 losses. I spend more time now in this game angry/frustrated than I actually spend enjoying it.

One day I will learn to love myself and quit for good.

She means the random option. When you select the random option, it generates a purple guy figure.

You keep coming back. So there’s something you love enough to tough the losses

As Ayeziza said, I was talking about random select. I like playing healers and tanks, but if you add those roles in random, the majority of time you will only be playing tank or healer.

Varian messes up the bruiser role, as most of the time the random MM will just assign Varian to match with a team that is lacking a tank, so you end up not playing him as a bruiser/assassin.

So that means you can only add ranged/melee assassins and support. I know you can add eight favorites, but that kind of negates the point, I’m looking to be surprised by whatever hero the algorithm selects, losing the bruiser role because of Varian, means you’re most likely to be assigned a ranged assassin, or support.

Oh yeah. I remember back then we had a few threads complaining that the random option was actually Varian mode.

You can pick Varian, or you can pick any hero you want, or you can pick random Varian lol.

I don’t mind looking at some replays, depends if you want master level feedback or you are happy with a bit lower.

I play every role with some success except support but I do seem to play mainly different characters to you.

I’ll give some quick advice on the bruiser role since I think thats the role i’m most comfortable in.

In terms of decision making I would say pre 10 your main focus wants to be soak, try to turn up to objs unless you notice their solo isn’t going to attend, then it becomes a decision of winning the obj fight and or keeping up in exp. If you are close to a talent tier level especially 10 its probably worth grabbing the exp for the talent before attending the obj in this situation.

All of your off laners apart from Malthael have pretty medicore waveclear, so if you are on a 3 lane map vs a solo that is double soaking and outsoaks you, you want to try to bully them and slow them down.

Try to slow fown their rotations and maybe force them to hearth if you lower their health enough. Don’t be so aggressive that you lose so much hp that you need to hearth or get ganked.

If you notice they have been absent from the lane a bit and could be getting a camp, if yoi feel confident you could beat them and you can see their team mates arnt close to assist consider invading. Or you could join your team for a 5 v 4. If you can’t get a kill quickly go back to soaking.

While soaking keep an eye on what is happening on the map. I see a lot of laners ignore their team to focus on soak even if they could joina close by fight to give them the edge.

If you see a fight close by such as a camp fight, especially as most of your characters are weak in the soak it’s probably worth giving them a hand.

You want to try and keep up with exp if you can’t gain the advantage. Post 10 you still want to soak up exp but I would say look for more oppprtunities to assist your team as you have ults and hero kills are worth more. Again don’t spend too long with your team if it doesn’t look like you are going to get a kill and will fall behind in soak.

Your team comp should affect your priorities as well, for example if your team mainly has late game power spike you should prioritise exp more and if you have the early game advantage in team fights try to capitalise on that advantage and try to help your team secure kills and get map advantage early on.

When your camp (boss in particular) is invaded, make sure to dump all your abilities on the NPCs so that the opposing team has no chance but wipe you without casualties.

Using the NPC as neutral shield is absolutely cowardly and unsportsmanlike.

That’s one of my biggest annoyances when you provide vision for your team on their reckless boss attempt and then continue to focus on the boss when you can see other team charging in and you rapidly ping danger.

Because I clearly hate myself and only seem to remember the few moments of fun I have in the game, not the pain.

Like just now when we threw objective at 27 minutes into Braxis and turned what would have been a win into a loss. All that we had left was their core, and my teammates threw somehow. Our Diablo went brb because they left the stove on? lmao.

Absurd.

Your team was demoralized because you didn’t die as much as they did.

The only reason I’m not annoyed at Thrall’s death count is because of their Rag and Zeeb.

Literally their Rag stood there and let us beat him up the whole game.
