Return HoTs to the players

Oh I know, but I remember one of the things people were also complaining about was the fact that they made a clause or something like that saying that all maps made on the map editor were property of blizzard exclusively. I remember a lot of creators being very upset about this.

they responded to valve’s filing a trademark with an opposition to that trademark. Valve and Blizzard reached a settlement so blizzard withdrew their opposition and valve was cleared to trademark DOTA, which is noted in blizzard’s legal faq pages that make a distinction between DOTA and DotA. (ie it indicates valve has trademarked “DOTA” and links to their legal page regarding use of the trademark)

The trademark is the symbol for representing something, it is not the game.

Warcraft-related terms and designs were changed as part of the settlement, so it’s not fighting over the “rights” that people take-away from the use of the word “lawsuit” when reading on the internet. Blizzard chose to not trademark DotA so the community could retain use of it, and the community still retains use of “DotA.”

I remember you saying this in the past, yes. I probably shouldn’t have said it the exact way I did but that’s besides my point. What I’m getting at here is the fact that had Blizzard exclusively disclosed that anything created with their editor was property of Blizzard and that no one else could own it or trademark it. That’s the base of my argument.

Well, think about it this way. If this were to be done with hots, at least it would generate new content. Now we have nothing really new. Something is better than nothing. I’m sure some people would be upset, but at least the game has some sort of “update”.

They could but then how will they monetize the free content people make for the game? I sure as hell won’t buy it where 100% of the money goes to Blizz and nothing to the creator.

Back then, they didn’t have Activision as the evil gold digger for a partner. Back then, Blizz actually was ok with all the wild stuff people did with their games. After Activision came into the picture, it has become a problem for DOTA 2 to be a thing. When for years Dota was possibly the most popular game mode made by a fan.

Blizzard owning the rights doesn’t mean people couldn’t receive money for their contribution. At least they shouldn’t make it like that. I was saying they should to protect themselves from having someone try to trademark or gain the full rights to something made using their editor.

I think the biggest issue they see is that it would take work to make an editor accessible to the public and that they’d want to prevent another Dota circumstance. That’s my thinking.

Personally, I think the whole dota thing was dumb. If they didn’t want that to happen they should have had something like a disclaimer in place, but I think they should have just let it go. It’s just greed and stinginess in my eyes.

I know. But I also know that Blizz won’t even acknowledge the creators of anything, nor compensate them.

Yes, they should’ve, but that was a different Blizz back then. A better Blizz.

Yeah I agree. Blizzard is not the same thing many grew to love.
