HGC Prize pool was $5MIllion… The year that they announced it would no longer be supported Overwatch League prize pool went up $5 million.
It is a shame that Heroes of the storm died because blizzard was pumping millions and millions forcing Overwatch to be an esport, when if HoTS had that same amount of support it would have absolutely flourished.

Yes but i hate their choice but i also understand it. They saw HotS didn’t perfom that well in the moba category (i mean HotS didn’t become the leader among mobas) and wasn’t really an original IP (but multiples IPs put together), they decided to focus on OW because it was really a new IP and because it was also very trendy especially on Twitch.
I also remember some game developper that i don’t remember his name who leaked their unofficial point of view about OW and he said they were damn angry to have release OW as a normal game instead of a Free to Play game, because a game like Fortnite was pritting money while OW didn’t as much. That’s the reason why they forced an OW2 game, to transform the existing game as a Free to Play and i know fans have been disapointed by this new game.
Maybe i’m wrong but i think OW2 is also a dead game, i’ve almost nobody in my friend list that is playing this game todays, i still see people on Hearthstone or even SC2 but almost none on OW2.

There is basically a modern day film credit’s list of reasons as to why HotS got shafted, but considering what they were going for in HotS before pulling the plug as well as the current status of the other Blizzard games it is a mixed blessing.
Overwatch is a shadow of itself with it being a mess of a title.
Starcraft is in a similar pickle jar as HotS so it hasn’t received the same treatment.
Diablo is meh.
World of Warcraft took a serious hit with Battle for Azeroth and Shadowlands, somewhat recovering in Dragonflight, and is looking slightly better going into War Within.
Warcraft 3: Reforged’s dumpster is still smoldering away.
Diablo 2 remake is about the only good thing recently.
With HotS they were showing signs of wanting to add heroes that were not of any universe and were in the process of laying the groundwork for a unspectacular storyline. HotS was doing just fine not having any lore beyond people or critters getting yoinked from the different universes to throw hands in the Nexus.

It’d be cool if you provided sources for these complaints.
Or knew the difference between causation and correlation…
Overwatch’s prize pool is probably from its own sources, such as sponsorships, franchise sales, etc etc. 2018 OWL had 12 teams, while 2019 had 20.
From what I can see from some sources (liquipedia, esportsearnings) the numbers aren’t quite what you’re claiming either, but it’s not like you cared about select details the last time you were complaining about this either.
Pretty sure HotS was gutted for Diablo and Warcraft, cuz ya know, that’s where the teams went.
It’s sad what happened, but ultimately, HOTS was an expensive game to develop and the returns on investment and growth in player base just didn’t pan out. Even with all the support it had, it was hardly “flourishing”.
Blaming OW is just misplaced scapegoating.

HotS was not killed by OW. It was killed by Acti-Blizz PR, “Lootchests” and the greed of stakeholders.

we all know is not OW fault but Bobby Kotick

That rotten person is the root of Blizzard’s issues. If not directly, then indirectly hastening the process and not addressing or solving anything. Do video games really need CEOs who just see game firms as a get rich quick scheme?

No, HotS (or any other game) failed compared to cats on the web.

Yes, seven long years ago. This thread just makes me feel my age, as I reject the premise that OW was a factor in Hots demise. Hots failed for many reasons, Overwatch wasn’t one of them. If anything, the cross promotions brought over new players to Hots from OW.

The same things that happened between OW1 et OW2, they tried to change the formula to earn more money, except it didn’t work in my opinion with HotS.
I mean the day they have put the lootchests in the game i have never purchased again any new skins or character.
I think the idea behind 2.0 was to attract a lot of new players with all those new changes but it probably didn’t work as intended and old players stopped putting money in the game (all previous skins you could have purchased in the past were now easily obtainable for almost nothing and olde players who put money in the past felt betrayed).
There was a gambeling law not soon after HotS 2.0 that affected it more than OW.

Do you mean gambling law in US ? Because i know in EU few countries had problem with lootchests but not all the countries in EU has forbidden that system.
Belgium did, caused the wide ban of hots purchases in that region followed by disabling the whole thing entirely a couple of weeks later.

HotS had MORE support than Overwatch for most of its life. It being dropped had nothing to do with OW. Any company will take two successful games over a single one.
Fixed the typo.

Wait, what, am I supposed to be the cynical one, or you Phase? So confused now.

I will say, that Overwatch cross-promotion was maybe one of the worst experiences I had in HotS. So many a-holes who would repeatedly walk into towers and do nothing else all game just to get the D.Va skin faster. That was only a few months after I started playing, too.

No. They do not need suits or shareholders either. Usually when a developer/studio/group is at their apex is when they are renting an office space, working in a garage, and wearing casual clothing while putting their heart into the product. Just a bunch of nerds wanting to make a great game that’ll hopefully make a good amount of money.
They may not be printing money, but they made or are making a game that’ll be fired up by fans for years or decades later.
When they go public and start getting people on board that have little to nothing to do with the actual game being made is when quality starts to slump.
