Reinhardt in development since 2019, still not here

I am really really disappointed that Reinhardt still isnt in the game.

You brought Mei as a replacement, fine, but then come Hogger? I dont have anything against Hogger, but I was expecting Reinhardt to come to the game really. How much time can it need? 4 years to get Reinhardt?
Its really that Blizzard has lost huge huge face and image since years now. This game is really fun for me, but yeah, its yet another downturn from Blizzard. One of soo soo so many.

I cant include links here, search for Heroes of the storm Reinhardt. There is a wiki page on fandom.

Also I disagree with the developer statements.
Reinhardts charge is very different from Diablo, because Reinhardt pins them against walls and damages them much, while Diablo does not, its just used as a combo to replace enemy heroes.
And Reinhardts prejectile attack is similar to Varians Q, yes, but so are many many others, like just like Dva, or Nova or Cassia, when Nova still had railgun perk.

I also read that they wanted to implement that protective screen, but it was difficult to achieve vs AoE effects like blizzard.

I mean, they could use something like morales safeguard icon around all the friendly heroes nearby and zarya like shield. Problem solved.

Not to sound like a Blizzard fanboy (far from it), but be glad the game is online at all at this point. It’s 6 years old, apparently not a huge commercial success, the main tournament was shut down, new content is really sparse, special holiday events non-existent.

Yet we still got Hogger, and there is a big balance patch coming soon involving 22 heroes. That’s decent for an old game in maintenance mode.

The internet is full of games which are completely abandoned by this point, full of hackers, chat bots and other riffraff, developers who literally stopped caring and only milk it for whatever skin sales they can get.

At least we aren’t at that point. And probably wont be for a long time.
I mean, Diablo 1 is at that point, but that’s understandable as it’s a 23 year old game. (Probably kept on battle.net out of goodwill, it’s not even sold anymore, it’s a free download)

Its Blizzard, they got much more money than needed for this game, its my favorit Blzzard game by far, with many of my friends. If they were to shut it down I am completely done with this company. Its already sad that they cut the team for this game so hard. No christmas event this year and such. I know its the hardest game to make, that they got, because of balance and such. And its maybe not the biggest seller, but I love this game the most. and spent money on it. If its closed, i am done with them, they got so much money

Its Blizzard, they got much more money than needed for this game

That point keeps being repeated over and over by some posters.

But just because Blizzard is a multi-billion dollar company, doesn’t mean they are willing to allocate much (or any significant sum) of that into HotS.

And its maybe not the biggest seller, but I love this game the most.

Same. I hope it stays online forever, even if all the human modes die one day in the future (like some have on Australia or Singapore servers). Even if only for AI or the nostalgia of playing a few Customs with friends.

This game is almost entirely about heroes from other franchises. I get being disappointed in not having X hero by now, but so what if Reinhardt isn’t here yet? There’s always going to be heroes people expected by now. Take a peek at any “most wanted heroes” thread and you’ll see the devs could never put in everyone, even just the biggest names, by now. There’s simply too many of them.

Besides, if I have to choose between blizz sinking resources into a specific hero for an indefinite amount of time or keeping on schedule with the hero cadence, I’ll take the latter every time.

Maybe not that long, but assuming they started tinkering away at rein after mei’s release, 6 months is sort of unrealistic for them making the kit work.

Devs have said that they’re not afraid to shelve heroes only to pick them back up again at a better time. I remember when the devs talked about doing Fenix back in 2015, but decided to hold off because they wanted to take a break from resurrections mechanics (iirc, leoric was recently released at the time). Fenix came to us in march 2018 (which was also when we got the last SC hero btw :^) )

Hi sonyagod! Thanks for the question

Reinhardt presents several challenges to the team that we haven’t been able to cleanly solve in a way we are happy with.

The first of these is of course, his barrier. Blocking projectiles isn’t a huge problem, but blocking AOE abilities is! I think everyone would expect basic attacks or abilities like Frostbolt and Hungering Arrow to be blocked but what about abilities like Cone of Cold or Multishot? Then of course there’s the case of abilities like Flamestrike simply being able to be cast behind Reinhardt’s barrier. Should basic attacks like Tassadar’s beam be blocked by the shield if the targeted hero moves behind it? At the end of the day, we felt there would just be a ton of confusion as to which abilities pass the shield and which shouldn’t, plus the fact that it would be a massive amount of work to do a sweep through the game and add special cases for all of the things that shouldn’t bypass the shield as well. We wouldn’t be able to dedicate a lot of Reinhardt’s power pie to his shield which is unfortunate because that’s one of the most unique aspects of his overall kit.

Next is the rest of his kit. His charge is very similar to Diablo’s charge or Stukov’s heroic Massive Shove. His projectile attack is nearly identical to Varian’s Q ability, Lion’s Fang. We would have to put a lot of work into redesigning his kit or making it feel uniquely different from other heroes we already have in the game.

Because of these and several other factors, we ultimately came to the decision that Reinhardt would simply be too much work and require too much engineering time to make everything work the way we wanted it to and in a reasonable time frame. That being said, the team has a long list of Heroes that we would love to bring to the game, so while we are working on new Heroes we’ll definitely keep Reinhardt in mind. It’s not uncommon to have Heroes on the backburner until we get the right inspiration or ideas to make them the best they can be for Heroes!

Reinhardt wasn’t ever in development (thank god not another big man with hammer), because even in consideration he was considered too difficult/too similar to others.

Don’t spread misinformation OP

Or easier to compare with: Dvas grid. Heroes in the grid are protected (wall takes damage), heroes outside are not.

But i would still consider it strange as its supposed to be a wall to block things. And i think AoE’s should be the general counter to that. But in the end, gameplay and balance matter most, so if it doesnt realy match the overwatch state entirely, i could still consider that acceptable.

https://www.destructoid.com/stories/heroes-of-the-storm-team-we-don-t-see-any-end-in-sight--597592.phtml

“At that time, we had already begun prototyping a Barrier Field ability to explore the possibility of bringing Reinhardt into the Nexus but were met with some issues. Unfortunately, we were not super-confident in the general direction that was heading, and while we were working through that, another Hero designer chimed in with the thought that he could translate Mei’s Overwatch kit into a Tank role for Heroes. After the designer put together the paper pitch, we all got super excited and the rest is History!”

Reinhardt was in early development, but was shelved because they couldn’t get his shield working in a satisfactory way. But he was in actual testing.

You’ve obviously never seen diablos pop build pre-nerf.

and frankly out of all the heroes to be in hots, reinhardt? What about mat horner? how bout swann? Reaper would be cool too.

Being mad at what ya don’t have is a bad way to live m8

You being disappointed by this is on you, and doesn’t help resolve your own issue in that concern.

Everyone wants someone to also get into the game, but the magical reality is that if you personally aren’t working on the game, you’re doing yourself a disservice by being “disappointed” by stuff that doesn’t get into the game by ‘x’ time span.

I’d be more “disappointed” that people think there’s something to be had by topics like this or in the list of name topics or the other myriad of “I want x, but have no clue to how to design, program, test, or otherwise contribute to the realization of the hero, and not certainly going to pay anything for it either”

Technically they have like, over a hundred basic layouts for hero concepts… or at least heroes they’ve put down as “this would be cool” iirc from an old AMA comment.

I would guess they have a dozen, if not several dozen heroes who were at some point in development, but were stopped for some reason or another very early on.

Which they give to the CEOs.

As for Rein, he is like trying to fit a square into a circle hole. He present a lot of problems, with the biggest being his shield.

I doubt we’ll see him in HotS anytime soon. The next hero is most likely from either Diablo or Starcraft (though Diablo far more likely) and after that one, another one from Warcraft, and than it’ll be 2022.
But on the other hand, they might say no more heroes get added ever, HotS ends, in the meantime.

Thanks for the clarification.

Still, I’d prefer Winston for an Overwatch Tank personally (though that may stray too far into bruiser territory–now that I think about it none of the characters from Overwatch really make sense as Tanks since they all rely on a dangerous frontline presence rather than peel)

Fascinating.

EDIT: If I wanted an Overwatch, Sombra would make a fantastic support, Doomfist could be a cool Tank/Bruiser (though steps on Diablo’s toes a bit), and Baptise actually has enough stuff to have a full kit without too much translation (though seeing what they did (well) with Mei, I don’t think the translation part is too much to ask for)

Reinhardt would be cool in theory but in practice if his shield works like it does in OW he’ll be just as impactful (read: hurtful) on the meta as Garrosh was on release (and continues to be with highly organized teams).
You have a maintank who now enables your team in a way no other maintank did before because he can not only facetank poke for you, but he can just completely negate all incoming ranged damage to a certain extent. Though at best I’d assume it only works on mage skillshots like Magic Missiles and orbs, which would make it just niche since there’s so many more aoes that don’t travel.

I do want to see baseline cleave on a melee attack for a tank. Blaze is okay but it’s just tickle damage most of the time. Also feel like we’re long overdue for a whacky hero that really shakes up what mobas are about, it’s just been a bunch of optimized LoL-esque releases lately.
We should get a real ranged tank, and not just one with an attack that’s sort of ranged, but an artillery like tank. Perhaps they could even lay mines or something. :spider: :eyes:

This from AMA last year same questions for any heroes that had last new skin before Heroes 2.0 release they are: TLV, Thrall, Falstad, Medivh, Ragnaros, Rexxar, Tyrande, Samuro, & Probius.

Example that why Abathur had new skins exactly since after Heroes 2.0 release had answer:

  • Abathur had adopted Xenotech skin based from Mecha War (Neo-Stormwind).
  • Tychus gaining Summer-seasonal skins with two different names.
  • Raynor rework also had new skin called Road-raider from Warchrome Wastes.
  • Kerrigan had new skin entitled Cheerleader based from Burning Court RCHS.
  • Nova adopted her Deathranger skin from Warchrome Wastes had limited offers at this point.

As I can need to do that if Deathranger Nova skin had to be seen again I order to only 1 item per tint.

As for Overwatch Reinhardt wasn’t ever in development because even in consideration he was considered too difficult/too similar to others even with Junkrat had already rework here (see The Scarlet Heist).
