Quick Cast Settings

I’ve always played with default settings so quick cast has always been off. I read that playing with it on is better because it requires less actions and therefor should be faster and more accurate.

So yesterday I turned it on and played half a dozen games. My feeling so far is that it is faster but also less precise. Part of it is that I’m not used to it and that should improve as I get used to it. But part of it just seems less accurate because you don’t see the skill path outline before use so you have to guesstimate width and distance and that can result in missed shots.

I know there is also the Quick Cast Upon Release option, which should mitigate that issue but I haven’t tried it yet.

Just hoping to get others thoughts regarding this and which setting is best for optimal play.

My default is set to off, but I have exceptions like Tracer’s Q and Mephisto’s Q.
The first one is because this dash doesn’t have to be precise.
The second one, although it’s a skill shot, the benefits outweigh the negative impacts. You gain micro sec of inputs during so much CDR that it’s exponentially better to fast cast in the long run.
Thinking about it, I should put Valla’s full Q build on quickcast for Q and E.

Just stick with it and never look back, if your ping is decent you’ll quickly get used to width, radius and even the range of spells so you never misfire. On release option works just as well for more powerful spells that you might prefer to get the most out of (void, ring, dragon strike for example). Many people prefer to mix input modes on a per spell basis.

Lowered reaction time and ability to deal “some” damage after being ambushed is enough of an argument. You can also forget about playing Zeratul, Tracer and several more demanding heroes with the setting turned off.

  1. On release allows you to see the range until you let go of the key.

  2. When you’re used to your hero’s abilities, you’ll know the range and you won’t need to see the indicators.

Valla Q build was the first hero I tried Quick Cast on and thought it worked pretty well. I did a little worse than normal but that’s to be expected when trying quick Cast for the first time.

Quick cast is indeed better if we assume you’re both comfortable with either. But, as you would’ve guessed, it depends on the hero and your preference with how you set your keys.

Tracer Q is a no-brainer I would say. I think everyone should put it as quick cast.

I have Diablo Q and E set to quick cast as well. You do sometimes charge, flip the wrong target, but I prefer my charge to go right up when I’m in range. Q click-mouse click-out of range-Q click-mouse click-out of range got really annoying.

I have Junkrat, Zarya Q, and probably Genji Q as well on quick cast. There should be more, but not gonna think through right now.

Most of rest, I set it on default.

Your latency might be an issue too. When I played in other region, I had to set some spells on quick cast because it got unpredictable on when your click will go through.

  1. Yeah I just haven’t tried that yet. I’ll probably give it a shot today or tomorrow and see how it feels.

  2. I’m pretty familiar with the ranges so I still hit most of the shots. It’s just sometimes with like a Valla Q or Orphea E I’ll misjudge the range sometimes by like half a fingers width, which is really small but enough to just barely miss.

Apocalypse, charge and flip into a stun in open space is one of the things you won’t be able to pull off reliably without quick cast. It’s almost essential against human players.

It may seem awkward getting used to the new scheme at first if you are used to default casting, but playing that way puts you at a significant disadvantage both in a sense of mechanics and delay on your actions.

I live the quick cast life since years and years ago.

I’ve tried to go back but cannot.

imagine having targetted abilities, bit cringe.

I personally like quick cast for that extra reaction time. I guess it takes practice to get used to not knowing exactly. I also use the hero’s sight distance as another reference of distance. Most skills shots shoot the length of their sight.

“Fan” who is a grand master streamer likes to use on release cast because he likes to know the precise range of something. Obviously there is a slight delay in his casting but he’s proof that if seeing the skill shot is something you prefer you can still make it work.

Quick cast is almost necessary for me, but that’s just me. I find it hard to use a hero like Jaina without it because I feel like it takes me too long to burst my abilities out at once. With quick cast all it takes is a click of a button.

On release is useful for thinner skill shot heroes like KTZ

I generally have quick cast off but I turn instant cast on some ults such as…

Malth Last Rites, Kara R2, Uther Divine Protection and spam them when Iwant to use em because id have problems with them not going off or target dieing be4 id input it the normal way.

I use this option exclusively. 100% best decision of my life.

I never touched quick cast and never had the need to use it.

Depends on the hero

For example I quick cast on Anduin on all 3 abilities, but I don’t quick cast on Ming’s orbs.

Just play what you feel comfortable with, also with quick cast you have to know the distance of the ability. No point turning on quickcast on if you don’t know the range of an ability.

For example: I turned on quick cast for Quira’s hook, but I had trouble landing hooks, so I turned it off and I land more hooks cause of the visual indicator.

Two words: On Release

So I tried On Release yesterday and it worked pretty well. There were some instances where a shot didn’t go off either because I right clicked before release causing it to cancel or the key stuck for a fraction of a second.

For me, I feel I’m not really able to tell which method I do best with because the difference seems to be pretty minimal. It does seem like a mix of quick cast and on release would be best depending on the skill.

So I’ll just have to slowly set each hero’s skills over time as I play them.

Orphea works best with the setting on release.
You just have to train to keep your mouse cursor on top of your target when pressing the key on the keyboard. But this applies to every hero
