QM Greymane tips?

So I picked up this bad boy lately because I’ve been trying to expand my lineup. I’ve been reaching a whooping 0% winrate through a fair number of games, but I’d very much like to persevere as I did with Tyrande and make him work.

My main issue is (I think fairly obviously) the difficulty of finding a good window to commit to a kill, I’ve mainly been playing the human auto build with a few worgen games when the enemy team lacked CC to throw at me and I had a more reliable than usual tank. My own performance is highly variable, with some games where I am on top damage wise and some with me being deep in the trash. Though, I do score a fair number of finishing blows even when I’m not dealing the most damage.

My worst games are against heroes like BW who can shut me down as soon as I go in, I find myself avoiding risky plays and my damage suffers then. I also struggle with games with no tank since I largely become prime focus material. I came to understand GM is ultimately ill suited for QM since he lacks defense and relies on his team for it but I’d still give him a last chance.

So, more experienced GM players, how do you deal with suboptimal situations? What do you build and what for? I’d very much like to hear your advice, and I’ll come back with a few replays later if it can help.

I poke them and whenever the fights starts I dive upon their weakest target.
If they use mobility to escape I use the bite ult to narrow the gap between us So more for dmg/mobility then the reset

I didn’t add anything here until now because i’m sure there are plenty better qualified people to give advice on Greymane but you have barely had any response so i’m a little sad and I will try to give you a few pointers.

Your power lies in your W and don’t forget you do a ton of ranged (melee too obviously) damage with it active so you want to get the most value out of your W that you can. Don’t activate it if you are only going to get a handful of autos off unless it will secure a kill.

Don’t worry too much about your damage numbers it all depends on team setup especially in quick match. What matters is winning so for example if you are at a disadvantage in team fights try getting a level and map lead, look for ganks (might be hard to get your team to follow in qm though) and you could add a ton of value by getting a lot of killing blows rather than pure damage.

The best all around build is probably the W at 4 seconds at level 1 and the increased human dive range. Damage buff if enemy is slowed/ccd unless you dont have any.

I like going worgen build but mainly because I find it fun not because I actually think its better but in wacky qm comps if they lack cc it might be.

A lot of the time Q in worgen form is better for mobility for dodging skillshots, chasing or if you need to escape to buy you space hopefully till your E is off cooldown.

Remember you can use E in human form if a target e.g. a minion is behind you to resposition or escape, you can dive with e and use q to try to escape on a hero on the flank if you are in a bad position.

All I can think of atm, hope it’s some help.

Always “overextend” (push, doing camps) in Worgen form, not just for the increased dmg, but for the Escape as well.

Im a Greymayne enthusiast (not a pro) so take my advice with a grain of salt. However, all I do is QM so I like to think i have some clout in the way of the random, crazy, clown festival.

This right here. You’re so crap without it and in certain situations it’s hard to keep up. Hit minions, walls, johannas, whatever you need to keep it going.

In the lane phase i stay human and attack slow enough just to keep W alive. This also keeps the lane frozen. Either that or I go wolf form but I don’t pop W. Wolf kills the wave too fast leaving the cooldown on your W to be too high once it expires.

Pop W and go Wolf for maximum merc clear. You only have one health bar so they need to die as fast as practical.

GM’s weakness is lack of sustain which can mean plenty of hearthing. In matches where there’s no healer I’ve been trialling the level 4 talent Insatiable which lowers the cooldown of your fountain. It’s not super great, but it’s something.

GM can trade pretty well against other ranged assassins. Just keep in mind that if you commit as wolf against heroes like valla or falstad they can just dash away. Don’t over commit to the chase if you can’t keep up.

In all assassin match ups I like picking Running Wild at level 13. Without a frontline, players like to stand way back so having that extra range is so helpful to ensure a successful dive. The cooldown reduction of form swapping also helps you to dance in and out faster reducing the time youre exposed to the burn of high DPS.

I don’t have a perfect GM nor do I know if you need this tip especially if you’re used to AA dps heroes but. One thing you really need to know to maximize your damage and ability to pursue targets (melee or ranged) is animation canceling. You right click on your opponent then immediately click in the direction they’re running to cancel your attack after the hit. Otherwise, you’ll jump in and end up hitting them just twice before they fall out of your range.

Thank you peeps for your advice, I’ve been taking a break but I’ll try playing GM again and apply all of this in my future games.

I’ve been using W on cooldown or nearly on cooldown so far and it worked out pretty well, I use it mostly on team fights and mercenaries, not much when laning - I tend to prefer wolf form in lane because most of my lanes were uncontested, though I do take more damage than is comfortable when my opponent is there and should consider ranged W instead for safety.

It’s also hard to use it in QM I find because teams bob in and out of engagements quite a lot and I found using it a bit later than usual when I’m sure both teams will commit might be better even if I may miss out on some cooldown reduction.

I’ve been playing a bit more with worgen build in my last games and I had some success with it, I think I was being overly careful because I underestimate how much damage he can pull out especially with the worgen ult. I’m trying to go in more often and really commit when I do and I made some kills I didn’t suspect I could be capable of.

I must admit I neglected this one, a number of guides recommend the movement speed boost on W but the dive range talent was appealing to me especially for the cooldown reduction in case of a scuffed engage, I’ll build it in my next games. I tried the worgen Q one quite a bit and it was also nice.
