Asides from their wastefulness of not using the pilot model as the portrait for the recent Mecha skins. I’ve mentioned that a lot. They just wouldn’t listen.
Now come to the most recent hero: her W, described as “cause the enemies to bleed”. See? The keyword here is bleed. That’s a mechanic that the players have been asking for a long time. It could be used to cause damage the more the enemy moves. A means to counter mobile heroes.
But no! Instead of making it an interesting mechanic, they chose to treat it no better than a normal dot poison attack. The same thing that has already presented on a lot of heroes like Nazeebo, Lunara, Gul’dan, Stitches, etc…
And here people still wonder why the new hero is facing such a cold shoulder from the community even before the official launch. It’s all because of the boring, bland, unoriginal kits which were the direct result of the lacking of creativity from Blizz.
Her kit is awesome if you ask me.
A skillshot which deals more dmg from melee.
A skillshot which basically applies your Hero as a debuff on your target (can be cleansed), dealing dmg between you and them plus reactivable to knock them back.
A skillshot which can be used as an engage/disengage tool.
Plus cool Heroics.
It is not fun, and would only really work as a heroic.
So keywording it is pointless, as you describe it.
I loved playing bloodseeker those years ago on WC3… but it was an ultimate. And that is the only case of that being how such a “bleed” mechanic functioned iirc.
You could have a mechanic where an ability does extra damage if it’s target has moved further from it’s initial spot. But bleed would be a terrible name for it.
Example: a living bomb talent “if a hero with living bomb applied to them moves a long distance the explosion deals 100% more damage”.
Another mechanic, not the same, but using a similar keyword such as “wound” to do some setup where a small portion of the damage dealt is subtracted from the heroes max hp until they die/hearthstone/are healed by a healer.
Problematic and probably a a pain to implement. Also not a grand change to things. But it would be something you could add across multiple heroes outside of heroics.
Example: “hitting a target in the inner area of slam wounds them for 1% of their maximum hp.”
And where have I seen this before? Hmm… oh, that little hamster that is about a thousand time cooler than the new copy cat. Hammond, right?
All jacked from Sonya.
Ever heard of “tweaking” an ability? You start with an idea, then you adjust it. Brushing off ideas simply because you defaulting it with “poor”, “not fun” is nothing but sign of your laziness.
Interesting concept. Care to talk about it in your own topic?
Correct me if I’m wrong, but Hammond can’t attach himself to Heroes.
He’s also a Tank, and not an Assassin.
And his kit is nothing similar to Qhira outside of the “grapplinghook”.
And I should make a thread about every ability similarity, because there’s a ton!
So suggest how to make it work? The issue is you end up with a keyword that is near impossible to balance. It has to be weak when people don’t move, and strong when they move a lot. Is there even an example of it beyond bloodseeker, or whatever he is called now?
Also, I suggested a tweak of it, achieving the end result of movement = extra damage. which you don’t seem to want here.
I did also post a second mechanic, which only shares a similar name, I can fully understand why you do not want it here.
It’s another game. Some slight variations are to be expected. Tell me, how many people do you think that wouldn’t say “wow, that’s Hammond’s grappling hook from OW” when they first saw the spotlight?
Like that even matter.
Because the new one was clearly based on Sonya. Doesn’t make it any less of a copy cat though.
Just because you can’t do something, doesn’t mean the rest of the world can’t.
The thing has the passive and the active part. So, let the passive be the marking. When activated, for n seconds, any hero that got afflicted by it will lose X amount of life every Y distant they have moved. Multiply by the number of stack they have been afflicted with.
Anyway, my main point being, Blizz, a giant in the industry, does not have the courage to spice things up. So what if an ability or two is broken? Just fix it. Or come up with another idea. But no. They instead chose to play it safe. Making everything so-so, bland and boring. They intended to please everyone, but ended up satisfying no one.
Yup, but does it matter? Nothing forbid the OW team to make Hammond be able to attach to Heroes as well and not just terrain and structures.
I’m surprised there are no threads saying “that should be Widowmaker’s ability”, that’s how “unique” that grappling hook is, which is just one part of their kit, but when we speak about a Hero we should look at the complete kit.
It certainly does.
Since Qhira is a noname out of the blue character, they could’ve made her a Tank, but that’s not what they needed/wanted, so they can’t release Hammond instead of her, just because they (can) share 1-2 abilities.
That’s no excuse for why Hammond can’t attach himself to Heroes on OW.
Therefore the two are not as similar as ppl think.
There were character concepts (even Carbot’s idbecoolif) which had a really similar ability for Widowmaker -who is a skin in the game- (tho I think that’s fine that she’s “just” a skin).
There are a ton of similar abilities.
Just because Sonya and Qhira has some similarities, doesn’t mean Hammond can’t have his own grappling hook, and it is clear that Hammond couldn’t replace Qhire, and that’s why we got Qhire and not HAmmond (who I really want to see in the game, but I think he’s designed too much for 3D gameplay and wouldn’t feel right but clunky in HotS).
Or I just -without malecious- intent strongly disagree with you
Come to my thread for that, and it’s basically in the rules that the base Heroes are kinda taboo but I can do them as well.
Yes. Bleed as you describe it is a bad mechanic.
Note, as a one off heroic, maybe even a hero purely based around it, it would be good.
Part of design is knowing when you don’t need to add more mechanics.
And I should be clear, DoT, is a mechanic. They use different words to describe it, burn, bleed, poison, etc. it DoT is the mechanic. Cleanse is a mechanic.
Mule, is not a mechanic. It is a one off ability (nowadays at least).
so a garbage ability except against very specific heroes. Remember, HotS team is staying away From genetics, you so have one ability. For one hero. What’s the point of making it a mechanic of the game instead of an ability (heroic best, due to it being situationally viable, and level 20 coming super late) on a hero again?
I’m going to hammer it in again: My issue is not with this being made into AN ability. It is intrying to make it a mechanic that is in the game as a whole.
No, they listened and answered about it, you didn’t pay enough attention. (When they first release the skins, i have the same idea as yours (and i know that many other people do, too). But i figured it out why they didn’t make it. And I know that this isn’t the main idea of your post. But i HAVE TO talk about this.)
They answered it in the June Reddit AMA: "Those mecha pilots are teeeeeeny tiny – that means their textures are also teeny tiny. If we were to blow them up to fill out the size of the portrait window, they unfortunately wouldn’t be able to support with the right amount of fidelity. It’s a cute idea, but in the end, cost of the work required to create two additional models just for the portrait window would have taken a lot of time away from devs doing more impactful things.
Plus, for me, I’d rather see my badass mech!"
So in order to have 2 awesome portraits (that doesn’t really have a use), they have to make 2 new models and then make textures for those 2 models (the amount of work is equal to the amount of work that is needed to make 2 new skins).
What about protected state? (deflect, force of will)
What about teleports (li ming, medivh portal usage)
What about invulnerability frames? (recall)
What about long range movement? (falstad)
(note that blink is still a dash)
Its going to become a quite complex mess with a lot of conditions, and im afraid that the 2 heroes you want to counter are going to be the least affected.
And the reason why those 4 are mentioned:
If it hits through protected, it makes no sense at all and would be considered a sort of self damage as protect is ment to block it all
Teleports are essentialy movement, but its kinda ment as not being a movement action at the same time. I can imagine a dehaka burrow instantly killing a dehaka. Poor design if it works like that (poor example because he actualy fits in point 3). But lets consider bolt of the storm like talents instead.
These are movement abilities that remove you from the map for a moment. They are very similar to teleports, except in this case you get a few frames in which you are technicaly not existing on the map. It would again be strange if it hits through these
And not to forget, long range movement like falstad shouldnt be able to instantly kill him. So on this i would suspect a cap on the damage. But that would at the same time also destroy its usefulness on for example genji.
AoE roots like malfs are still a lot better since they specificly hinder dashes most of all as they simply just interup the movement. And even if the root would last only 0.25, if it exists for 3 seconds on the map. Its going to disrupt hypermobility for 3 seconds.
The mechanic is the same: latching to an anchor point and rotate around it. You just don’t see it because you’re too busy nitpicking to make it seems “different”. I.e. you’re playing with words instead of looking at the big picture.
That’s red herring.
Told ya, the new one is built on Sonya’s frame. With the E stolen from Hammond.
How fortunate that we don’t have you as a game designer.
I don’t even know what you’re talking here. How do you introduce a mechanic without making it an ability?
Or you are oversimplified it to make it look the same.
Do you have a problem with Sonya, Mura and Yrel having almost the same jump?
Or with that that Chen is called- Fat-Illidan for a good reason?
I don’t think the bleed is the main reason… You can nitpick, but that’s all it is, a nitpick. If they made bleed work the way you describe it, then people will just complain that she’s a copy of Bloodseeker.
