Honestly, I’m pretty tired of this game. I want to talk it out. Many heroes are prohibitively expensive, and often it doesn’t make any sense. For example, Alexstrasza costs 10,000 gold. Why? She was released in 2017, if I’m not mistaken. At the release, such a price would have been justified, but not today. The rewards for the match are insignificant. Quests also do not give much gold. As a result, you have to save up gold for a whole week for one (ONE!) hero, or even more, if you want to buy, say, Deathwing. This is insanity, considering that Blizzard didn’t give a damn about the game.
In addition, leveling these heroes is also a pain. It takes an unrealistically long time to level them up to 5 level, and even longer to 10 level and higher. And all you get as a reward for leveling up are loot boxes, which in 99% of cases contain absolutely meaningless junk, like emoticons, avatars, etc. Skins are very rare, and usually for heroes you don’t have.
I don’t see much point in paying real money for boosts and gems. All this money will go to World of Warcraft or Call of Duty anyway, and HotS and Starcraft will continue to rot, slowly decomposing into nothing.
It’s a dead game and completely unclear if Microsoft keeps up the “keep it running” strategy. It’s not what Microsoft usually does with their stuff. So focus on the heroes you would like to play and buy those. I can’t recommend to invest much money or time into a game which has seen the last content update 4 years ago with an unclear future.
Yeah, I wish the progression was faster.
Best way to get gold now is getting each hero up to level 5.
I understand that at the start it might feel daunting gathering gold to buy a hero you want, but it’s not all that bad, at level 25 you get 150 gems which allows you to buy a hero pack for 100 gems, it has like 20~ish heroes.
I also disagree that leveling a character to level 5 or 10 takes unrealistic amounts of time, if you are playing QM, usually it takes 6–7 games (without boost) to level a character from level 1 to level 5, also at worst it might take 14–15 games to level from 5 to 10.
(it will take more time to level vs AI, as xp reward is cut)
To level a character to level 5 on average takes 1.5 hours, to level a character to 10 might take ~4 hours, but as reward you get 500g every 5 levels.
If you have XP boost the time is halved, if you play with friends you get even more XP with every friend in the party, you also get even more XP if you play ranked.
In this reddit post https //www reddit com/r/heroesofthestorm/comments/7wsntg/how_to_earn_almost_14_mln_xp_per_hour_an/ you can see how people farm xp, after one hour you will level your character to level 5-6, after 4 hours ( 4 games) you will level a char to level 10.
Every hero to level 5 is good advice. Also quests help.
If you buy one bundle for $30 you will get a decent number of heroes.
I think that’s a reasonable price point for the game.
Realistically you’ll probably end up only playing 5 or 6 heroes regularly that you enjoy.
It’s been 10 years and even though I own all the heroes, only half of them are above level 5 and about half of those do I actually play with.
I’ve been playing for a year and a half on this account without spending a penny and I own every hero I want to play, which happens to be 65 of them. I also have enough gold banked right now to pick up two more, incase I get the spark to play someone else. I also haven’t been playing much in these last few months, so you can consider that as progress made over a year.
If you manage your hero levels, save your free gems you get every 25 account levels, and do your daily quests, you can get every hero you need pretty reasonably fast. Mostly you gotta hit those free rotation heroes to get gold from them. Otherwise, you wanna skip the grind, you have the option to pay a little money. It’s a free game, there has to be a concession.
Speak for yourself. Progression is one of the fun parts for me. I get to play with friends and get heroes for free?? Where’s the negative? If you want to get heroes quick, feel free to buy gems.
Game already gives you plenty of F2P heroes if you are new. And you get gems you can use to buy bundles.
While the revision of HOTs to 2.0 (back in 2017) was a step in the right direction, the biggest miss the team had was the continued model of making new players pay for each hero. I cannot think of a single thing keeping new gamers away from a game than the cost of a hero preventing them from trying them out (and possibly liking the hero).
They should have made all Heroes “free to play” and monetized other parts of the game… You see other games doing seasonal/battle passes or other ways to get cosmetics which you could go so many ways with.
In terms of hero progression, I believe it was a bad move to strip the mastery skin rewards, and just make available to anyone through shards. Everyone likes showing up in game with that exclusive skin you worked hard to get.
