Title is the topic. What are some older heroes that you are just now discovering, either because you’re just trying them out for the first time or because something clicked and you finally figured out how to play them better?
For me, there are two. There’s Tyrael, who I am FINALLY learning how to properly play as an aggressive inititation tank. His skill floor is deceptively high considering how old his kit is, but it’s still extremely effective in the right situation.
There’s also Falstad.
I have a history with macro oriented heroes like Abathur and Lost Vikings so I already understood Falstad’s worth as a macro hero, but I’ve recently started picking him with the goal of being more damage oriented. The result is that I’ve gotten a lot better using him for both categories. Gust is still one of the most useful heroics in the game, and Falstad himself is one of the most versatile damage dealers in the entire game. Being able to go to him when my team needs a little bit of everything is a great thing to have in my toolkit.
Who are some of yours? What are some older heroes you’re just now discovering?
Chen. Time to learn him from scratch. Losing so many games against him right now. Used to be a novelty/joke hero, now you really need to understand his inner workings to win games vs him.
As much as Chen’s rework has improved his viability, his core playstyle hasn’t actually changed much if at all from what it was pre-rework. Pretty sweet deal for the Chen mains who stuck with him over the years. They get to keep playing their same hero only now he’s much better.
Malthael
I pick him a lot lately, in ranked. He brings good macro to the table (which is essential). Also, plats have a tendency to draft multiple big frontlines, so he can take care of those.
Uther. I’m used to picking healers who top the healerboards, sometimes by a factor of 2, so I was always skeptical of Uther’s healing potential. He’s slowly grown on me for his ability to protect against burst damage and huge plays from the opposing team, as well as how tanky he is with the right build. Farming top heals with the likes of Morales, Lúcio, or Whitemane will never get old, but there’s definitely more to this guy than I thought.
Zul’jin. As a healer/tank main, I don’t play many assassins and when I do, it’s the ones with the most self-sustain - Life Drain build Gul’dan is my go-to. I always assumed Zul’jin was the weakest in that area because of his trait, but boy was I wrong. I almost never have to hearth with this guy, his ult is amazing against burst damage, and with a bit of finesse he can carry a team fight.
