I’m mostly thinking about it from my own perspective not so much because of other players.
There are times when I want to play heroes I have no experience with but because my MMR is higher with those that I am experienced with, I get into games where it’s obvious that my inexperience is costing my team the game.
I’m okay with playing with other inexperienced players, or at least players playing heroes that they aren’t experienced with, in this context. I would certainly make for more fair outcomes, which in general, would be more enjoyable experiences compared to getting stomped by a team comprised of players who have clearly played a single hero for a decade.
Ultimately, this disincentivizes me from wanting to expand my Hero pool, instead sticking to the dozen or so Heroes I regularly play.
I beleive the game already has what you’re looking for (kinda).
From the wiki:
Players should be matched with and against players of slightly lower skill when playing a Hero for the first time, and slightly higher skill when playing Heroes with which they have extensive experience. This results in a higher percentage of evenly-matched games, in which each team has a 45% - 55% probability of victory, and should encourages more players to try out a greater variety of Heroes in Quick Match games.

And my own expirences line up with that, though I know that statement is anecdotal.
What I don’t know is if this is only true for the very first game you play on a hero or if it lasts for a few levels.
Also unsure if having played that hero in vs AI will remove that “uncertainty”
So while the game doesn’t have MMR per hero or role, you still get the desired effect in some small part.

The player base isn’t large enough to have a MMR system strong enough to balance team comps how you would like.
QM isnt perfect at all but, it’s the game mode to try new heros/builds on. Players are usually forgiving on mistakes when you say “I’m new to this hero.” If not, just mute em and play.

This is only for low level/new heroes and caps out pretty quickly. It’s also an incredibly rough adjustment. Like my Raynor MMR is just going to be lower than my Tyrande because I suck more with him. People will be bad with certain heroes even after hundreds of games past those level caps. Not only is it not as fun for me, but it’s unfair to have to drag down my team’s expected performance because the system thinks I’ll perform at levels like my Tyrande when they’re getting my much worse Raynor. It’s just cleaner to use individual hero MMR than using just one number for all heroes.
The comp and population is largely irrelevant. What matters here is the MMR or skill level you have with an individual hero. Everyone will be good or bad at each hero and if measured, could have a number associated with that hero which has nothing to do with the population.
But I do find this rich coming from StrangeHero/ZenasPrime, the person who says MMR is all an illusion and isn’t real. I guess skill can be approximated after all, what a joke.

I never said that.
I said, and still say, that the ranked ladder is designed to be an engagement farm.
I don’t play ranked.
