In HotS settings I have set my refresh rate to 144 hz. Still the game renders at 300+ fps making my GPU very hot.
I tried the solution provided here https://eu.battle.net/support/en/article/32248 but that does not help.
I have a Ryzen 3700x and an Nvidia 2070 super. I have the latest Nvidia driver. My Gsync monitor supports up to 144 hz but I do not see the point in rendering faster than that. Especially not when the game has a feature build in for exactly this in the Video settings menu.

This might be an obvious question, but did you try enabling vertical synchronization (Vsync) in the options in addition to the frame rate limiter?
It will hard lock the maximum FPS to 144 in your case (the maximum refresh rate of your gaming monitor).
Make sure that Heroes of the Storm is running in full screen mode (exclusive) and not any windowed mode. Windowed modes do not work well with variable refresh rates as they rely on the window management system to present frames rather than interfacing with the display buffers directly.
